(300163) 2006 VW139 (provisional designation 2006 VW139, periodic comet designation 288P/2006 VW139) is a binary active asteroid and main-belt comet from the outer regions of the asteroid belt. The object was discovered by Spacewatch in 2006. Its binary nature was confirmed by the Hubble Space Telescope in September 2016. [5] Both primary and its minor-planet moon are similar in mass and size, making it a true binary system. [5] The components are estimated to measure 1.8 kilometers in diameter, orbiting each other at a wide separation of 104 kilometers every 135 days. [4] [6] [8]
2006 VW139 was discovered on 15 November 2006, by the Spacewatch survey at Kitt Peak National Observatory near Tucson, Arizona. [2] The possible cometary activity was seen in November 2011 by Pan-STARRS. [3] Both Spacewatch and Pan-STARRS are asteroid survey projects of NASA's Near Earth Object Observations Program. After the Pan-STARRS observations it was also given a comet designation of 288P.
2006 VW139 is a non-family asteroid of the main-belt's background population. [9] It is both a binary asteroid and a main-belt comet, also known as "active asteroid". It orbits the Sun in the outer main-belt at a distance of 2.4–3.7 AU once every 5 years and 4 months (1,944 days; semi-major axis of 3.05 AU). Its orbit has an eccentricity of 0.20 and an inclination of 3° with respect to the ecliptic. [1]
The body's observation arc begins in September 2000, with a precovery taken by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey at Apache Point Observatory, New Mexico, more than six years prior to its official discovery observation by Spacewatch at Kitt Peak. [2]
2006 VW139 was first observed by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in December 2011. [5] It was imaged by HST in September 2016, just before it made its closest approach to the Sun and confirmed its binary nature with two asteroids orbiting each other, and revealed ongoing cometary activity. [8] This makes the object the first known binary asteroid that is also classified as a main-belt comet. [8] The binary is thought to be the result of fission of the precursor caused by YORP-driven spinup. [5]
Observations of the HST revealed ongoing activity in this binary system. The combined features of this binary asteroid - wide separation, near-equal component size, high eccentricity orbit, and comet-like activity also make it unique among the few known binary asteroids that have a wide separation. [5] [8]
2006 VW139 has a derived diameter of 1.8±0.2 kilometer. [6] The Collaborative Asteroid Lightcurve Link assumes an albedo of 0.057 and calculates a diameter of 3.20 kilometers based on an absolute magnitude of 16.2. [4] The binary system has an estimated mass between 1.3×1012 kg and 1.1×1013 kg. [5] A single component has a derived mass of (6.15±4.85)×1012 kg. [6]
This minor planet was numbered by the Minor Planet Center on 12 October 2011 ( M.P.C. 76600). [10] As of 2020, it has not been named. [2]
1139 Atami, provisional designation 1929 XE, is a stony asteroid and sizable Mars-crosser, as well as a synchronous binary system near the innermost region of the asteroid belt, approximately 9 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 1 December 1929, by Japanese astronomers Okuro Oikawa and Kazuo Kubokawa at the Tokyo Astronomical Observatory near Tokyo. It was named after the Japanese city of Atami. It has the lowest Minimum orbit intersection distance (MOID) to Mars of any asteroid as large as it, its orbit intersecting only 0.03 astronomical units from the planet.
4450 Pan is a highly eccentric asteroid and contact binary, classified as a potentially hazardous asteroid and near-Earth object of the Apollo group, approximately 1.1 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 25 September 1987, by American astronomers Eugene and Carolyn Shoemaker at Palomar Observatory in California, United States. It was named after Pan from Greek mythology.
2697 Albina, provisional designation 1969 TC3, is a carbonaceous asteroid from the outer region of the asteroid belt, approximately 52 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 9 October 1969, by Russian astronomer Bella Burnasheva at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory, Nauchnyj, on the Crimean peninsula. The asteroid was later named after Russian astronomer Albina Serova.

It was discovered on 15 April 1985, by American astronomer Edward Bowell at the Anderson Mesa Station of the Lowell Observatory near Flagstaff, Arizona. The uncommon L-type asteroid has a short rotation period of 2.73 hours and was named for American astronomer William A. Baum.
1543 Bourgeois, provisional designation 1941 SJ, is a stony asteroid from the central asteroid belt's background population, approximately 12 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 21 September 1941, by astronomer Eugène Delporte at the Royal Observatory of Belgium in Uccle. The asteroid was named after Belgian astronomer Paul Bourgeois.
3034 Climenhaga is a stony Florian asteroid and synchronous binary asteroid from the inner regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 7.8 kilometers in diameter. The asteroid was discovered on 24 September 1917 by German astronomer Max Wolf at Heidelberg Observatory in southwest Germany and assigned provisional designation A917 SE. It was later named after Canadian astrophysicist John Climenhaga. Its minor-planet moon has a period of nearly 19 hours.
2754 Efimov, provisionally named 1966 PD, is a stony asteroid and binary system from the inner regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 5 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 13 August 1966, by Russian astronomer Tamara Smirnova at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory in Nauchnyj, on the Crimean peninsula. The asteroid was named after Russian aviator Mikhail Efimov.
23718 Horgos (provisional designation 1998 GO10) is a stony background asteroid from the central regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 2.9 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 2 April 1998, by Hungarian astronomers Krisztián Sárneczky and László Kiss at Konkoly's Piszkéstető Station northeast of Budapest, Hungary. The asteroid was named after the Serbian town of Horgoš.
5481 Kiuchi, provisional designation 1990 CH, is a bright binary Vestian asteroid from the inner regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 4 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 15 February 1990, by Japanese astronomers Kin Endate and Kazuro Watanabe at Kitami Observatory in Hokkaidō, Japan, and named after their colleague Tsuruhiko Kiuchi. The V-type asteroid has a rotation period of 3.6 hours.
12482 Pajka, provisional designation 1997 FG1, is a background asteroid from the inner regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 4.3 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered by Slovak astronomers Adrián Galád and Alexander Pravda at Modra Observatory on 23 March 1997. It was named after Paula Pravdová ("Pajka"), the daughter of the second discoverer.
4383 Suruga, provisional designation 1989 XP, is a Vestian asteroid and binary system from the inner regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 6.5 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 1 December 1989, by Japanese astronomer Yoshiaki Oshima at Gekko Observatory, Japan. The asteroid was named after the former Japanese Suruga Province. Its synchronous minor-planet moon, S/2013 (4383) 1, measures approximately 1.33 kilometers and has a period of 16.386 hours.

It was discovered on 21 April 1998, by astronomers of the Spacewatch survey at Kitt Peak National Observatory near Tucson, Arizona. The asteroid was named after Australian photometrist Julian Oey. The discovery of its minor-planet moon was announced in December 2014.

It was discovered on 8 April 2008, by astronomers of the Spacewatch program at Kitt Peak National Observatory near Tucson, Arizona, in the United States. This presumably carbonaceous body has a diameter of approximately 15 kilometers (9 miles) and rotation period of 10.7 hours.
