Gujarat Legislative Assembly or Gujarat Vidhan Sabha is the unicameral legislature of the Indian state of Gujarat, in the state capital Gandhinagar. Presently, 182 members of the Legislative Assembly are directly elected from single-member constituencies (seats). It has a term of 5 years unless it is dissolved sooner. 13 constituencies are reserved for scheduled castes and 27 constituencies for scheduled tribes. From its majority party group or by way of a grand coalition cabinet of its prominent members, the state's Executive namely the Government of Gujarat is formed.
Since the conclusion of the 2017 Gujarat Legislative Assembly election, the state saw resignations of several MLAs and bye elections on their vacated seats. It started in July 2018, when Congress MLA from Jasdan resigned. [1] He later won the bye election on the Jasdan Assembly constituency on a BJP ticket. [2] Later in February 2019, Congress MLA from Unjha Assembly constituency resigned. [3] She was followed by Congress MLAs from Manavadar, Dhrangadhra and Jamnagar Rural who resigned and joined BJP. [4] BJP won bye elections of these vacated seats in May 2019. [5] In June 2019, Four Gujarat BJP MLAs resigned after getting elected to Lok Sabha. [6] MLA from Radhanpur, Alpesh Thakor who had quit Congress [7] in April 2019 resigned as MLA along with Bayad MLA Dhavalsinh Zala in July 2019. [8] In the October bye elections, Congress retained Radhanpur,Bayad and gained Tharad, while BJP retained Kheralu, Amraiwadi and gained Lunawada. [9] From March to June 2022, 8 Congress MLAs resigned and joined BJP. [10] [11] BJP won bye elections on all their vacated seats with huge margins. In May 2021, BJP won the bye election of Morva Hadaf. [12]

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is a centre-right to right-wing conservative Indian political alliance led by the right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). It was founded in 1998 and currently controls the government of India as well as the government of 17 Indian states and one Union territory.
Shankersinh Vaghela is an Indian politician and former Chief Minister of Gujarat. He was the Leader of Opposition in 13th Gujarat Legislative Assembly.
Jagadish Shivappa Shettar is an Indian politician, who served as the 15th Chief Minister of Karnataka from 2012 to 2013. He is currently serving as Member of Karnataka Legislative Council. He has subsequently served as Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. He also served as the Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly during 2008–2009. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Earlier in 2023 he had joined the Indian National Congress, where he quit the BJP on being denied the MLA ticket in 2023. He represented Hubli-Dharwad Central Vidhan Sabha seat, which he resigned in 2023 before the elections. In March 2024, he was announced as the BJP candidate from the Belgaum Constituency for the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections.
Manpreet Singh Badal is an Indian politician from the Bharatiya Janata Party. He is the former Finance Minister of Punjab. He resigned from Indian National Congress on 18 January 2023 and joined the BJP the same day.
The Thakor Koli, or Thakore Koli, is a subcaste of the Koli caste of Gujarat. Koli people form the largest caste-cluster in Gujarat, comprising 24 per cent of the total population of the state. Koli Thakors in Gujarat are classified as Other Backward Class (OBC). During his tenure, the former chief minister, Koli community member Madhav Singh Solanki, included all Koli communities of Gujarat in the OBC. Koli Thakors are mostly cultivators or small land-owners.
Arjun Modhwadia is a former Indian National Congress politician from Porbandar Gujarat, India. He was the Leader of the Opposition in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly from 2004 to 2007. He had been a president of Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC), the Gujarat wing of Indian National Congress from 2 March 2011 to 20 December 2012.

Alpesh Thakor is a politician from Gujarat, India. He is a member of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly from Gandhinagar South. He was earlier a member representing Radhanpur (2017–2019). Formerly associated with the Indian National Congress party, he joined Bharatiya Janata Party in 2019. He started his career as a social worker and political activist. He is a leader of the Koli community in Gujarat. He founded the Gujarat Kshatriya Thakor Sena as well as OBC, SC, ST Ekta Manch, a social platform to demand reservations for people of the respective communities, around which a movement took place in Gujarat shortly after the Patidar reservation agitation.
In October 2018, there were incidents of attacks on Hindi-speaking migrants; from the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh; in Gujarat after the alleged rape of a 14-month-old in a village near Himatnagar in north Gujarat.
Dhavalsinh Narendrasinh Zala is an independent Indian politician. He was elected to the Gujarat Legislative Assembly from Bayad in the 2017 Gujarat Legislative Assembly election as a member of the Indian National Congress and again elected after 2022 Gujarat Legislative Assembly election from the same constituency as an independent candidate.
Geniben Nagajibhai Thakor is an Indian politician and member of the legislative assembly of Gujarat legislative assembly elected from Vav assembly constituency. She contested 2017 Gujarat legislative assembly election from Indian National Congress and won against Shankar Chaudhary of Bharatiya Janata Party.
In March 2020, a political crisis took place in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India, due to the resignation of 22 sitting MLAs of the Indian National Congress party from the state's Legislative Assembly. It eventually led to the fall of the Kamal Nath government and the subsequent formation of the fourth Shivraj Singh Chouhan government in Madhya Pradesh.
