Amaya Resorts & Spas, trading as Hayleys Leisure PLC (formerly Amaya Leisure PLC), is a Sri Lankan hospitality company. The company is listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange on 11 March 1996 and Sri Lankan conglomerate, Hayleys owns a controlling stake of 61.66% of the company's stocks (40.32% directly and 21.34% via its subsidiary, Dean Foster (Pvt) Ltd). [3] In 2020, Amaya Resorts & Spas ranked 87th amongst the top 100 most valuable brands in Sri Lanka by Brand Finance. [4]

History

Amaya Leisure commenced operations in 1981 as Connaissance, a tour operator and then in 1994, built a chalet-type hotel adjacent to the Kandalama lake. The hotel has 106 rooms and has been upgraded to four-star class and rebranded as Amaya Lake in 2005. [5] Hayleys acquired Amaya Leisure PLC on September 1, 2011. Back then, the company consisted of only three resorts, Amaya Lake, Amaya Hills, and Amaya Langdale. [6] In 2012, Amaya acquired the Lake Lodge in Kandalama and was planning to add 400 rooms as expansion. [7] As part of Tripadvisor's travellers choice, Amaya Langdale, a luxury boutique hotel, was ranked amongst the Top 25 Luxury Hotels in Sri Lanka in 2014. [8]

In 2016, Amaya Leisure sold 84.3 per cent of shares of The Beach Resorts Limited to Dhammika Perera, the co-chairman and controlling shareholder of Hayleys, for LKR330.1 million in a related party transaction. [9] The Beach Resorts Limited is a freehold property located in Wadduwa. In the same year, Amaya Leisure ventured into the Maldives by acquiring a 51-villa luxury resort for US$23 million. [9] In 2017, Amuna Ayurveda Retreat won the Best Wellness Retreat at the World Spa Awards. [10] In September 2017, Amaya Hills celebrated its 20th anniversary and Yes FM sponsored the main event held at Le Garage, the hotel's nightclub. [11] In 2021, the long-term director/shareholder, Lalin Samarawickrama, who was the fourth-largest shareholder, quit the company and sold his stake of 9% to Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation. [12]

Currently, the company has a capacity of 439 rooms across its nine properties, while owning six of them and managing the other three properties on behalf of third-party owners. [3] Amuna Ayurveda Retreat is located in Kimbissa, Sigiriya. The retreat is built in a manner to represent a traditional village and built using recycled materials. The medicinal oil and food are grown in the village itself and the meals served to the guests are purely vegetarian. [10]

Kulappu Arachchige Don Dhammika Perera, commonly known as Dhammika Perera, is a Sri Lankan billionaire businessman and politician. A top corporate leader, he is one of the wealthiest people in Sri Lanka, controlling 23 listed companies on the Colombo Stock Exchange. Perera owns a controlling stake in the conglomerates Hayleys and Vallibel One, a company he founded. Through Hayleys, Perera controls Amaya Leisure, The Kingsbury and Singer while Royal Ceramics, LB Finance, and Lanka Tiles are controlled by Vallibel One. Perera has been closely linked to the former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, having served as chairman of the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka from 2007 to 2010 and Transport Secretary from 2011 to 2015. He was appointed a Member of Parliament in the National List in June 2022, succeeding Basil Rajapaksa from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, briefly serving President Gotabaya Rajapaksa as his Minister of Investment Promotion from June to July 2022.

The company was incorporated as Hotel Reefcomber Limited in 1973. In 2010, the company was rebranded as Citrus Leisure when Dilith Jayaweera and Varuni Fernando of Triad Advertising bought a stake in the company. The Fortress Resort & Spa, traded as The Fortress Resorts PLC, is a luxury boutique hotel in Koggala, Sri Lanka. The resort was incorporated in 1973. The resort is listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange. In 2003, Sri Lankan entrepreneur, Dhammika Perera acquired a controlling stake in the resort. The resort was formerly known as Club Horizon Hotel, Koggala and was renamed to its current name in the same year. The hotel was affected by the 2019 Easter bombings. The company was listed as a public company in the following year. Ceylon Hotel Holdings, a subsidiary of Galle Face Hotels Group is the holding company of Ceylon Hotels Corporation. Ceylon Hotels' subsidiary, Kandy Hotels Company owns and operates the Queen's Hotel and the Hotel Suisse heritage hotels.

Aitken Spence Hotel Holdings PLC is a hotel chain holding company based in Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan conglomerate Aitken Spence is the parent company of Aitken Spence Hotel Holdings. The company operates hotels in Sri Lanka, Maldives, Oman and India. Aitken Spence ventured into the hospitality business by building two seaside resorts designed by Geoffrey Bawa. The company was founded in 1978 as Ahungalla Hotels Ltd and is the proprietor of the Hotel Triton. Ahungalla Hotels Ltd was listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange in 1980. In 1994, after acquiring Aitken Spence Hotels Ltd, the company gained control of the properties of the hotel chain. <span class="mw-page-title-main">Hunas Falls Hotel</span> Hotel in Sri Lanka

Hunas Falls Hotel is a boutique hotel in Elkaduwa, Sri Lanka. The hotel is located about 23 kilometres (14 mi) from Matale and about 24 kilometres (15 mi) from Kandy, in Matale District. Eponymous Hunnas Falls is located on the grounds of the hotel. Hunas Holdings PLC is the owner and operator of the hotel. Hunas Falls Hotel opened in 1971 with prime minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike in attendance. The government took control of the hotel in 1976 from Colombo Commercial Company. Subsequently, the hotel was privatised in 1991 and a Hayleys-Jetwing joint venture acquired a controlling stake. Hunas Falls Hotels Ltd was listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange in 1993. Jetwing managed the Hunas Falls Hotel under its brand name. When Hayleys acquired Amaya Leisure, Amaya assumed the management of the hotel.
