Anak Rawa people is an ethnic group that inhabits Siak Regency, Riau Province, Indonesia. This ethnic originally lived in Sungai Rawa village, which jutted out further into the land. However, when the village began to be visited by immigrants, the tribal elders invited their residents to move away to the coast and occupy the Penyengat village until now. [2]
Historically, Penyengat village was ruled by ten leaders. In 1908, the village was led by Bathin Kundur, who was known as Bathin Sembilan, but in 1918, Bathin Kundur was replaced by Bathin Rimbun. During the leadership of Bathin Rimbun, Penyengat village developed with a jurisdiction covering Kumpai to Sungai Lakar. [3] Over time, Penyengat village was then inhabited by two ethnic groups, namely the native Anak Rawa people and the Malay people.
The Anak Rawa people is a society of Proto-Malay. This ethnic is also said to be old and predates the Siak Sultanate in Riau. The Anak Rawa people are known to be honest during the Siak Sultanate, where the Anak Rawa people are also trusted by the sultanate to take tribute from the areas of power. With the passage of time and the pattern of life that moved, the Anak Rawa people expanded from time to time, until finally the settlement of this people close to the local transmigration people. This is what later made the Children of the Anak Rawa people began to be known to the public. [4]
The Anak Rawa people lives in Penyengat village, located on the edge of the forest and the Rawa River, so they are highly dependent on and adapt to the forest. [5] They, along with other forest-dwelling tribes in Riau, are semi-nomadic and heavily dependent on the forest, as is the case with the Sakai people. [6]
Penyengat village, where the Anak Rawa lives, consists of three hamlets, namely Hamlet I (Tanjung Pal), Hamlet II (Penyengat), and Hamlet III (Sungai Mungkal). In the 1980s, Penyengat village did not have many residents, only around five families. There are two areas that are still sacred to the population, namely the Kuala Sungai Rawa and Lubuk Belingkau. [4]
In 2019, the population of the Anak Rawa people was 1,500, living primarily in Penyengat village, Riau. [1]
