11001 was one of the first British Railways diesel locomotives, built in 1949 at British Railways' Ashford railway works. It was designed by Oliver Bulleid when he was Chief Mechanical Engineer of the Southern Railway. It was powered by a Paxman RPH Series 1 engine, capable of delivering 500 brake horsepower (370 kW) at 1,250  rpm. It was driven via a Vulcan-Sinclair fluid coupling to an SSS (synchro-self-shifting) Powerflow gearbox. The gearbox provided three forward and reverse gears in either high or low range, with top speed ranging from 5 mph (8 km/h) in 1st gear, low range up to 36 mph (58 km/h). It had a 0-6-0 wheel formation, driven by rods from a rear jackshaft on the final drive, and with Bulleid's favoured BFB wheels. [1]

Its main duties were on branch lines and shunting, working dwindling goods services on the Caterham line during the 1950s. [2] It was allocated to Norwood Shed, but also has been photographed in Swindon. It was withdrawn in August 1959 and scrapped at Ashford Works in December.

Unusually, the locomotive's controls were laid out as in a steam locomotive, possibly due to few drivers having experience with diesels at the time. There are no known photographs of the interior.

British Rail reserved the TOPS Class 97 designation for departmental locomotives, which were used for special or engineering duties. They were therefore of several different classes, lumped together for numbering purposes. Some locomotives were converted from redundant engines, whilst others were purpose built. In 2008, Network Rail once again used Class 97 for signalling test locomotives.

The Southern Railway took a key role in expanding the 660 V DC third rail electrified network begun by the London & South Western Railway. As a result of this, and its smaller operating area, its steam locomotive stock was the smallest of the 'Big Four' companies.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">SR Z class</span>

The SR Z class was an 0-8-0T 3-cylinder tank engine designed by Richard Maunsell and intended for heavy shunting on the Southern Railway, the first eight entering into service in 1929. It was a successful design and would have been built in greater numbers, but an order for a further ten was cancelled in 1930 due to the reduction in freight traffic as a result of the Great Depression.

The Leader was a class of experimental 0-6-0+0-6-0T steam locomotive, produced in the United Kingdom to the design of the innovative engineer Oliver Bulleid. The Leader was an attempt to extend the life of steam traction by eliminating many of the operational drawbacks associated with existing steam locomotives. It was intended as a replacement for the ageing fleet of M7 class tank engines still in operation on the Southern Railway (SR). British Railways 10100 was an unusual experimental diesel locomotive known informally as The Fell Diesel Locomotive. It was the joint production of Davey Paxman & Co, Shell Refining & Marketing Co and Lt-Col L. F. R. Fell, built for them by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway at Derby. Sir Harry Ricardo was also involved. By the time it emerged in 1950, nationalisation had taken place and it carried British Railways livery. The locomotive had six diesel engines, four of them used for traction. There were two auxiliary engines, both of which were 150 hp (110 kW) AEC 6-cylinder units, and these drove the pressure-chargers for the main engines and the purpose of this arrangement was to enable the main engines to deliver very high torque at low crankshaft speed.

British Railways Class D16/2 was a class of prototype diesel locomotives built by British Railways at Ashford Works and introduced in 1950–1951, with a third example being introduced in 1954. They had been designed by Oliver Bulleid for the Southern Railway and were authorised in February 1947 but did not appear until after nationalisation. The diesel engine and transmission were supplied by English Electric, but the Bulleid influence was obvious. The box-like body style closely resembled Bulleid's electric locomotives and was quite different from the usual English Electric style, typified by British Rail Class D16/1 which in turn was strongly influenced by contemporary American design.

Under the Whyte notation for the classification of steam locomotives, 0-6-0+0-6-0 represents the wheel arrangement of an articulated locomotive with two separate swivelling engine units, each unit with no leading wheels, six powered and coupled driving wheels on three axles and no trailing wheels. The arrangement is effectively two 0-6-0 locomotives operating back-to-back and was used on Garratt, Double Fairlie, Meyer and Kitson-Meyer articulated locomotives. A similar arrangement exists for Mallet steam locomotives on which only the front engine unit swivels, but these are referred to as 0-6-6-0.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">SR Merchant Navy class</span> Class of 30 three-cylinder 4-6-2 locomotives

The SR Merchant Navy class is a class of air-smoothed 4-6-2 (Pacific) steam locomotives designed for the Southern Railway by Oliver Bulleid. The Pacific design was chosen in preference to several others proposed by Bulleid. The first members of the class were constructed during the Second World War, and the last of the 30 locomotives in 1949.

Córas Iompair Éireann No. CC1, generally known as the Turf Burner, was a prototype 0-6-6-0 articulated steam locomotive designed by Oliver Bulleid to burn turf and built at CIÉ's Inchicore Works in Dublin. CC1 shared some, but not all, of the characteristics of Bulleid's previous attempt to develop a modern steam locomotive, the Leader. Like the one completed Leader, CC1 had a relatively short career and was never used in front-line service. It was the last steam locomotive to be constructed for an Irish railway.

The Paxman Hi-Dyne engine was a form of experimental diesel engine developed for rail transport use by the British engine makers Paxman of Colchester. They used variable supercharging to give a constant power output across their speed range.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Yorkshire Engine Company Taurus and Indus</span>

The Yorkshire Engine Company Taurus and Indus locomotives were two very similar lines of 0-8-0, diesel-hydraulic locomotives that weighed 58 tons and had a maximum speed of 36 mph (58 km/h). The two Rolls-Royce C8SFL diesel engines gave a total of 600 hp (450 kW). The transmission of the Taurus locomotives worked on a similar principle to that of the Fell diesel tested during the early 1950s. In this case, at low speeds only one engine was used, the second being engaged between 3.5 mph and 15 mph to enable haulage of 300 - 500 ton loads at speeds of up to 36 mph. The maximum speed with one engine was 12 mph (19 km/h) while the minimum speed with both engines was 3.5 mph (5.6 km/h). Both engines drove to a common torque converter and used a common throttle control with a separate lever being provided to engage the second engine as the need arose.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Indian locomotive class WDM-7</span>

The WDM-7 is a diesel-electric locomotive of Indian Railways. It has been manufactured by Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW), Varanasi. The model name stands for broad gauge (W), diesel (D), mixed traffic (M) engine. Today, these are found exclusively at Chennai Central and nearby area.
