The New York Life Building is a 12-story, 54.86 m (180.0 ft) high-rise in the Library District of downtown Kansas City, Missouri. The brick and brownstone tower, which was completed in 1890, generally is regarded as Kansas City's first skyscraper and was the first building in the city equipped with elevators. It was commissioned by the New York Life Insurance Company, which also used the same design for an identical building in Omaha that was completed in 1889. Several buildings around the world share its name. A centerpiece of the Library District neighborhood, the building is located amidst other, historic structures: it is across Ninth Street from the Kansas City Club and just down Baltimore Avenue from the Central Library.
The Ballenger Building, also known as G.F. Troxell Furniture Store, Taylor Music and Furniture Co., and Safeway, is a historic commercial building located in downtown Columbia, Missouri. It was originally built about 1892, and expanded rearward about 1904. It was extensively remodeled in 1928. It is a two-story brick building on a stone foundation. It features terra cotta ornamentation and Chicago school style windows. Today it holds Kaldi's Coffee House.
The Coca-Cola Bottling Company Building, also known as the Kelly Press Building, is a historic commercial building located on Hitt Street in downtown Columbia, Missouri. It was built in 1935, and is a 1 1/2-story, Colonial Revival style brick building with a side gable roof with three dormers. It has a long one-story rear ell. Today it houses Uprise Bakery, Ragtag Cinema, Ninth Street Video, and Hitt Records.
The National Guard Armory is a historic National Guard Armory located at Columbia, Missouri. It was built about 1940, as a Works Progress Administration project. The rectangular, reinforced concrete, Art Deco building sits on the north side of downtown Columbia. Today the building is owned by the city and used as a youth recreation center.
Downtown Columbia is the central business, government, and social core of Columbia, Missouri and the Columbia Metropolitan Area. Three colleges — the University of Missouri, Stephens College, and Columbia College — all border the area. Downtown Columbia is an area of approximately one square mile surrounded by the University of Missouri on the south, Stephens College to the east, and Columbia College on the north. The Kress Building, also known as Kress Wholesale Company Store and Mehornay Furniture Store, is a historic commercial building located in downtown Columbia, Missouri. It was built in 1910 for the S. H. Kress & Co., and remodeled in about 1946. It is a tall two-story, brick building with an open storefront topped by horizontal metal banding, that consists of large plate glass windows. The building has seen a variety of uses and is currently host two night clubs: Roxy's on the second story, and The Piano Bar on the Ground.
The McCain Furniture Store Building is a historic commercial building located in downtown Columbia, Missouri. It was built about 1930 for the S. H. Kress & Co., and remodeled in 1951. It is a two-story, brick building with a simple stepped parapet. Though it has hosted a variety of businesses since the closing of the original store, today it holds Plasma Biological Services.
The Missouri State Teachers Association Building is a historic building located at Columbia, Missouri. It was built in 1927 and houses the Missouri State Teachers Association Headquarters. The building is located on South 6th Street on the University of Missouri campus and is a two-story, Tudor Revival style brick building. It was the first building in the United States built specifically to house a state teachers association. A historical marker on the site commemorates the lands former tenet "Columbia College," the forerunner of the University of Missouri.
The Virginia Building, also known as the Strollway Center and Montgomery Ward Building, is a historic commercial building located at the corner of 9th and Cherry Streets in Downtown Columbia, Columbia, Missouri. It was originally built in 1911 to house one of the first urban Montgomery Ward department stores. It is a two-story building with a flat roof and gold brick walls. Today the building houses several local businesses including, the Cherry Street Artisan and Columbia Photo.
The Hotel Roosevelt is an historic structure located in downtown Cedar Rapids, Iowa, United States. It was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. In 2015 it was included as a contributing property in the Cedar Rapids Central Business District Commercial Historic District. The building is now known as the Roosevelt Lofts.
Florence Downtown Historic District is a national historic district located at Florence, Florence County, South Carolina. The district encompasses 24 contributing buildings in the central business district of Florence. The district's buildings were built between about 1890 and 1940. Most buildings are two-story brick buildings with embellished cornices. Many are characterized by flat rooflines, decorative brick moldings, and vertical pilasters. While all the properties have been modified to include modern storefronts, the upper facades are largely intact and retain their integrity.
The German-American Bank Building is a historic bank building located at St. Joseph, Missouri. It was built in 1889, and is a six-story, rectangular brick building designed in the Richardsonian Romanesque style with added Beaux-Arts detailing.. The bank originally was created to provide service to the large number of German-speaking citizens in the region. In 1918 it was renamed the American National Bank. Later, it became First Federal Savings and Loan.
The Russellville Downtown Historic District encompasses an eight-block area of downtown Russellville, Arkansas. This area, developed primarily between 1875 and 1930, includes the city's highest concentration of period commercial architecture, a total of 34 buildings. Most of them are brick, one or two stories in height, and in a variety of styles. The district is roughly bounded by Arkansas and West 2nd Streets, El Paso Avenue, and the Missouri-Pacific Railroad tracks.
The Devonshire is a historic apartment building located at Indianapolis, Indiana. It was built in 1929, and is a three-story, three bay by nine bay, Tudor Revival style brown wire cut brick building. It features a recessed central entrance bay, limestone arched entrance, and brick and stone checkerwork at the third floor level.
The Eldora Downtown Historic District is a nationally recognized historic district located in Eldora, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. At the time of its nomination the district consisted of 84 resources, including 65 contributing buildings, one contributing site, three contributing objects and 15 non-contributing buildings. The district takes in the city's central business district, which also includes its governmental, educational, and religious activities. It is located in the original town plat from 1853. Development began around the public square and spread out from there. The present building stock is second generation at the earliest. The oldest extant buildings were built in the 1870s, although the greatest number of buildings were constructed in the 1890s. There were also peak years of construction in the 1910s, and the late 1930s and 1940s. The commercial buildings generally range from one to two stories, but the tallest structure is three stories in height. They are primarily composed of brick construction. Late Victorian and various revival styles from the late 19th and 20th centuries are dominate. The non-commercial buildings include four government buildings, four churches, three residences, a hospital, and a school.
Sumner Public School, also known as the Daniel Boone Apartments, is a historic school building located at Boonville, Cooper County, Missouri. It was built in 1915, and is a two-story, rectangular brick structure with a central projecting bay. The roof is framed by a stepped, corbelled parapet on the front facade. The school served as an African-American public school until converted into apartments in 1939-1940.
Fox Theater, also known as Central Assembly Christian Life Center, is a historic movie theater located at Joplin, Jasper County, Missouri. It was built in 1930, and is a two-story, "L"-shaped, brick, single bay, two-part commercial building with Mission Revival detailing. The ornate interior features extensive displays of plaster, metal, and wood decoration executed in Spanish Revival designs. The building was sold to the Central Assembly Church of Joplin in 1974.
Middle West Hotel, also known as Grand Opera House and Webb City Opera House, is a historic hotel building located at Webb City, Jasper County, Missouri. It was built in 1883, and housed an opera house. It was remodeled to its present form in 1902, and is a three-story, brick commercial building with brick corner pilasters and limestone trim.
Inter-State Grocer Company Building, also known as Bagcraft Building, is a historic factory and warehouse located at Joplin, Jasper County, Missouri. It was built in 1915, and is a five-story fireproof wholesale distribution and food processing building constructed of reinforced concrete with tapestry brick cladding and terra cotta ornamentation. Also on the property is a contributing one-story brick garage.
Joplin Downtown Historic District is a national historic district located at Joplin, Jasper County, Missouri. The district encompasses 48 contributing buildings in the central business district of Joplin. It developed between about 1883 and 1958 and includes representative examples of Mission Revival, Art Deco, and Modern Movement style architecture. The district includes the previously listed Fifth and Main Historic District, Newman Brothers Building, Fox Theater, and St. Louis and San Francisco Railroad Building. Other notable buildings include the Liberty Building (1923), Cunningham Bank / Quinby Building, Model Clothing Store Building, Lichliter-Kassab Building, Zelleken Block, Muenning Building, and Frank Hollcroft Livery Building.
