Churchill Square is the principal shopping centre in the centre of Brighton and Hove, a city on the south coast of England. It is at the eastern end of Western Road, near the Clock Tower.
Churchill Square has up to 85 shops (when all are let), in addition to several sites for "open-air" style stalls in the corridors. [1] It is arranged over three floors with only the food court, which has five restaurant spaces, on the uppermost; some of the largest stores occupy two floors. The majority of the shops are chain stores, typical of many other large British shopping centres. Additionally, on the outside piazza there are several food vans.
In November 2023, Churchill Square was bought by Ingka, the parent company of IKEA, with IKEA confirming plans to open a store at the centre.
It was originally built during the 1960s by the architects Russell Diplock & Associates, obscuring several streets. That original centre included low-rise office blocks, a high-rise residential tower (Chartwell Court), shops and a supermarket with open but covered walkways between them. It was majorly rebuilt as an indoor mall, but without the low-rise office blocks. The new centre, which opened in 1998, [2] involved further road closures and changes to the underlying street layout.
In 2023, it was announced that the former Topshop store, which had been closed since 2021, [3] would be turned into a huge food and drinks venue for almost 500 people called The Botanist, part of a national chain of more than 30 gastropubs. As well as a new shopfront and changes to the internal layout, the venue is expected to have outdoor seating on the roof. [4]
In November 2023, Churchill Square was bought by Ingka, the parent company of IKEA, [5] who also acquired Chartwell Court and two car parks which are attached to the centre. Following the announcement of the centre's acquisition, IKEA confirmed plans to open a "City Store" at the former Debenhams' site. The store will have a Swedish Deli, in-store planning services and around 6,000 products on display, 3,000 of which will be available for immediate purchase. [6]
Churchill Square is accessible by bus (it is on multiple bus routes), or a five- to ten-minute walk from Brighton Station, or by car (there are two car parks; the Orange car park located on the lower levels of the centre, the entrance to which is located on Regency Road off of West Street, and the Green car park on the side of the centre, the entrance to which is located on Cannon Place), or by taxi (there is a small taxi rank in Queen Square on the other side of Western Road).
Debenhams plc was a British department store chain operating in the United Kingdom, Denmark and the Republic of Ireland, and is still operating as a franchise in seven Middle East countries. It was founded in 1778 as a single store in London and grew to 178 locations across those countries, also owning the Danish department store chain Magasin du Nord. In its final years, its headquarters were within the premises of its flagship store in Oxford Street, London. The range of goods sold included middle-to-high-end clothing, beauty, household items, and furniture.

The construction, undertaken by Sir Robert McAlpine, began in 1986, and the building was opened to the public on 25 May 1989. The White Rose Centre is a shopping centre in the Beeston area of Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It spans two floors and is near the M621 motorway. It takes its name from the White Rose of York, the traditional symbol of Yorkshire. Most shops are situated on the Ground Floor. Foyleside Shopping Centre is a shopping centre in Derry, Northern Ireland. Construction started in the early 1990s and the centre opened on 25 September 1995. As of April 2023 the centre is 98% let across 55 units. The centre is spread over a 6.99 acre site in the city centre of Derry. Foyleside extends to a size of 34,400 square meters. Making it the second largest shopping centre in Northern Ireland behind Belfast's Victoria Square. The centre is anchored by Marks & Spencer, Frasers and Dunnes Stores.

Rushmere Shopping Centre is a shopping centre and retail park in Craigavon, County Armagh, Northern Ireland. Opened in 1976, the centre is the one of the oldest and the third largest shopping centre in Northern Ireland, behind Belfast's Victoria Square and Derry's Foyleside, at over 350,000 sq ft, although combined with the retail park makes it over 480,000 sq ft. The anchor tenant of the centre is Primark, while the retail park's anchors are Homebase and Matalan.
