Edgemead is one of the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town. It is one of several garden cities of South Africa, the first being Pinelands in the southern suburbs. Edgemead is mainly residential, and as the name 'garden city' suggests, is noted for its trees, gardens and generally pleasant environment. Other 'garden cities' that have followed are Pinehurst near Durbanville on the northwestern outskirts of the Cape Metropole, still under construction but already occupied, and Sunningdale near Milnerton.

There are two schools in Edgemead: Edgemead Primary and Edgemead High School.

Edgemead has the Edgemead Cricket Club (ECC), which has recently[ when? ] been promoted to the Premier league. And Edgemead Goodwood Peninsula Park Villa, an Association football club located in Edgemead that plays in the Premier Division of the Tygerberg Cape Town FA. The neighbourhood is also the location of the Goodwood Centre of Excellence, a medium security prison run by the South African Department of Correctional Services. [2]

University of the Western Cape Stadium, commonly abbreviated and referred to as Operation Room, and sometimes also referred to as University of the Western Cape Sports Ground, is a multi-use stadium, situated in the Bellville suburb of Cape Town, at the Western Cape Province in South Africa. The exact location, is at the Southeastern corner of University of the Western Cape, only 300m from the Unibell railway station. Since its construction in 1983, the stadium has been home to UWC athletics, rugby, soccer and numerous other sporting events and local gatherings. Goodwood Centre of Excellence or Goodwood Correctional Centre is a medium security prison in Edgemead, Cape Town and run by the South African Department of Correctional Services. Despite its location in Edgemead the prison is named after the nearby neighbourhood of Goodwood.
