Ehsan Daxa (Arabic : احسان دقسا, Hebrew : אחסאן דקסה; 19 February 1983 – 20 October 2024) was an Israeli Druze [1] [2] army colonel and commander of the 401st Armored Brigade of the Israel Defense Forces. He was killed by an explosion in the Israel–Hamas war on 20 October 2024, at the age of 41. [3]

Biography

Daxa was born and raised in the Druze town of Daliyat al-Karmel. He enlisted in the Israel Defense Forces in 2001, joining the 7th Armored Division. During the 2006 Lebanon War, he served as a company commander in the 75th Battalion of the 7th Brigade. [3] Daxa was wounded at the Battle of Ayta ash-Sha'b.

In 2024, Daxa became commander of the 401st Brigade. He was killed after the tank he was in ran into an booby-trapped explosive device in Jabalia in the northern Gaza Strip during the Israel-Hamas war on 20 October 2024. [3] He was buried in Daliyat al-Karmel the next day. He is considered to be the highest-ranking officer to have died in ground combat since the start of the war. [4] [5] Meir Biderman was appointed as the acting commander of the unit. [6]

Daxa was married and had three children. [3]

Gadi Eisenkot, also spelt Eizenkot, is an Israeli general and politician from the Israeli National Unity party. He served as the 21st Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces from 2015 to 2019 and from 2023 to 2024, as a minister without portfolio in Israel's unity government. Eisenkot, who grew up in Eilat, pursued maritime studies and later served in the IDF's Golani Brigade. Ahmed al-Jabari, also known as Abu Mohammad, was a senior leader and second-in-command of the military wing of Hamas, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades. He was widely credited as the leading figure in the Hamas takeover of the Gaza Strip, and commanded the 2006 Hamas cross-border raid which resulted in the capture of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit. Under his command, along with chief logistics officer Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, Hamas developed its own military weapons capability significantly by acquiring longer-range guided missiles and rockets.

The Battle of Shuja'iyya occurred between the Israel Defense Forces and the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades on 20 July 2014 during 2014 Israel–Gaza conflict in the Shuja'iyya neighborhood of Gaza City, in the Gaza Strip. Shuja'iyya, with 92,000 people in 6 sq-kilometres, is one of the most densely populated areas of the Gaza Strip. According to the IDF, it had become a "terrorist fortress", that between 8 and 20 July had fired over 140 rockets into Israel after the outbreak of hostilities. Casualty figures are not known with precision, partly because bodies were recovered long after the fighting, and people had also died of injuries afterwards. The UN Protection Cluster states that between the 19-20th, 55 civilians, including 19 children and 14 women, were killed as a result of the IDF's actions. At the time, estimates varied from 66 to about 120 Palestinians killed, with a third of them women and children, and at least 288 wounded. The UN figures of Palestinian casualties are preliminary and subject to revision. 16 Israeli soldiers were killed.

Ghassan Alian is an Israeli-Druze officer in the IDF and the current head of the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories. Aluf by rank, he has previously served as Central Command's executive officer and head of the Israeli Civil Administration. Gaza-Israel clashes began on 11 November 2018, when a botched Israeli covert operation carried out in the Khan Yunis area of the southern Gaza Strip killed seven Palestinian militants and one Israeli soldier. The battle of Beit Hanoun began on 27 October 2023 in the midst of the 2023 Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip. On 18 December 2023, Israeli forces had prematurely signalled that they had full control over Beit Hanoun and had destroyed Hamas’ Beit Hanoun Battalion. However, clashes continued in the town. Israeli forces withdrew from the town on the 24th of December. Subsequently, some Palestinian militants infiltrated back into the town and conducted attacks against Israeli forces to the east.

Sgan alufSalman Habaka was an Israeli military officer who was killed in action during the Israel–Hamas war. Born in the Northern District village of Yanuh-Jat into a Druze family, he joined the Armored Corps of the Israel Defence Forces in 2009 and was subsequently appointed commander of the 188th Armored Brigade's 53rd Battalion. While fighting in the Gaza Strip in 2023, Habaka was killed by Palestinian militants.
