The Israel Border Police is the gendarmerie and border security branch of the Israel National Police. It is also commonly known by its Hebrew abbreviation Magav, meaning border guard; its members are colloquially known as magavnikim. "Border Guard" is often used as the official name of the Israel Border Police in English. While its main task is securing Israel's borders, it has also been deployed to assist the Israel Defense Forces, and for counter-terrorism and law enforcement operations in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and in Jerusalem.

A series of coordinated attacks, conducted by the Palestinian Islamist militant group Hamas, from the Gaza Strip into bordering areas in Israel, commenced on Saturday, 7 October 2023, a Sabbath day and date of several Jewish holidays. Hamas meticulously planned for a massacre of Israeli civilians with the goal of provoking Israel to invade Gaza. The attacks initiated the 2023 Israel–Hamas war, almost exactly fifty years after the Yom Kippur War began on 6 October 1973. Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups named the attacks Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, while they are referred to in Israel as Black Saturday, the Simchat Torah Massacre, and the 7/10 attacks or 7 October attacks.
Yonatan Steinberg was an officer in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) with the rank of colonel, who served as the commander of the 933rd "Nahal" Brigade. He had previously served as the commander of the Center for Tactical Training in the IDF, the commander of the Binyamin Brigade, the Assistant Brigade Commander (Operations) of the Steel Formation, and the commander of Battalion 931. He was killed by members of Hamas in a surprise attack on Israel in October 2023.
