The battle of Jabalia was a battle fought between Israel and Hamas-led Palestinian forces in Jabalia in the Gaza Strip, as part of the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.
It began on 8 November 2023 as part of the 2023 Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip, [1] and ended its first phase in late January 2024 with an Israeli withdrawal. [16] Following this, the two sides intermittently clashed in Jabalia, [17] [18] [19] [20] [21] and then a three-week Israeli offensive in May 2024 ended with a final Israeli withdrawal and Hamas continuing to retain control. [22]
An Israel Defense Forces (IDF) combat team engaged in 10 hours of fighting in western Jabalia on 8 November, during which it seized weapons and exposed tunnel shafts. [1] The al Quds Brigades launched mortars at Israeli forces operating in the area. [23] [ unreliable source? ] On 18 November, IDF spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said that Israeli forces had expanded clearing operations to additional neighborhoods in Gaza City, [24] as the IDF 162nd Division began operating on the outskirts of Jabalia. [25] [ unreliable source? ] An IDF spokesperson claimed that Hamas’ northern brigade maintained a command and control center and critical strongholds in Jabalia. [25] [ unreliable source? ] The next day, the IDF Nahal Brigade moved from the Al-Shati refugee camp toward Jabalia City to support offensive operations in the area. [26] Israel said its forces encircled Jabalia on the night of November 20–21 as fighters conducted attacks on the Israeli lines of advance.[ citation needed ] The IDF reported that the Israeli Air Force and artillery forces bombarded the Jabalia area north of Gaza city to “prepare” the battlefield. On 5 December, the commander of the IDF Southern Command said that the IDF was operating in the “core” of Jabalia [29] [ unreliable source? ] The IDF stated on 6 December that its Nahal Brigade was fighting militants in Jabalia. [30] On 7 December, the IDF 460th Brigade raided an outpost for Hamas’ Central Jabalia Battalion in the al Bisan area of Jabalia. In addition Israeli forces killed several militants and located a network of underground tunnels, a training complex, and a weapons warehouse near the Hamas battalion's post. [31] On 9 December Israeli forces raided a series of buildings in Jabalia containing Hamas militants and weapons and advanced to the al Sheikh Radwan Pool southwest of Jabalia city. [32] Additionally, Israeli forces called in a drone strike to support their maneuvers in the city. [33] Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant stated on 11 December that Hamas’ Jabalia Battalion was “on the verge of being dismantled.” [34] Israeli forces captured Hamas military infrastructure in Jabalia, including explosives manufacturing facilities, training facilities, and weapons caches. [35] IDF Brigadier General Itzik Cohen said on 19 December that the fighting in Jabalia "resulted in the dismantling of the military capacity” of Hamas’ North Gaza Brigade. [36]
Despite IDF reports that Hamas had been dismantled in Jabalia, the group and other Palestinian forces reinfiltrated the city and launched renewed attacks on IDF troops in the city throughout January 2024. [37] [38] [39] By 30 January, it was reported that the IDF had withdrawn from the area and Hamas had reestablished control. [16]
From February to April 2024, Palestinian forces clashed with the IDF intermittently in Jabalia, especially in the city's eastern areas. [17] [18] [19] [20] On 16 April, the IDF conducted an "unspecified military operation" in Jabalia, which came under artillery fire by Palestinian militants. [21]
By 11 May, the IDF reported that Hamas was "reconstituting militarily" in Jabalia and issued evacuation orders to Palestinian civilians in the area. [40] [41] The IDF launched a full-scale reinvasion of Jabalia on 13 May [42] which lasted three weeks and ended in an Israeli withdrawal on 31 May, [43] with Hamas remaining "combat effective" in the city. [22]
Palestinian officials said that 70% of the Jabalia refugee camp had been destroyed. The IDF said that it had destroyed over 10 kilometers of underground tunnels that it says were used by Palestinian militants. [44] [45] The IDF also said that it had destroyed a number of weapons production sites and rocket launchers. [44] [46]
IDF troops recovered the bodies of seven Israeli hostages in Jabalia during the fighting. [44]
After four months, the IDF reinvaded Jabalia on 5 October 2024.
Jabalia, also spelled Jabalya, is a city in the Gaza strip located 4 kilometers (2.5 mi) north of Gaza City, in the North Gaza Governorate of the Gaza Strip. According to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, Jabalia had a population of 172,704 in 2017. The Jabalia refugee camp is adjacent to the city to the north. The nearby town of Nazla is a part of the Jabalia municipality.
The 2009 Ibrahim al-Maqadma Mosque strike or massacre of Ibrahim al-Maqadma Mosque occurred on January 3, 2009, as part of the 2008–2009 Israel–Gaza War when the Israeli Air Forces launched a missile and hit the Martyr Ibrahim al-Maqadma Mosque in Beit Lahia in the Gaza Strip during the evening prayers.
Emad Akel also spelled Imad Akel was a commander of the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas. He was killed by the Israel Defense Forces.

He had previously served as the commander of the Center for Tactical Training in the IDF, the commander of the Binyamin Brigade, the Assistant Brigade Commander (Operations) of the Steel Formation, and the commander of Battalion 931. He was killed by Hamas fighters in a surprise attack on Israel in October 2023.
The battle of Beit Hanoun began on 27 October 2023 in the midst of the 2023 Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip. On 18 December 2023, Israeli forces had prematurely signalled that they had full control over Beit Hanoun and had destroyed Hamas’ Beit Hanoun Battalion. However, clashes continued in the town. Israeli forces withdrew from the town on the 24th of December. Subsequently, some Palestinian militants infiltrated back into the town and conducted attacks against Israeli forces to the east.

According to Oxfam, there are about 500,000 Palestinians, along with 200 Israelis and other captives, were trapped in a "siege within a siege" in northern Gaza.

He was in detention under the Israeli government from 2003 until 2011, when he was released as part of the Gilad Shalit prisoner exchange, and was deported to the Gaza Strip. He was later assassinated by the IDF during Operation Iron Sword.

Ido Kas is an Israel Defence Force officer with the rank of Colonel, currently serving as the commander of the Fire arrows Formation.
During the Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip, Shuja'iyya was the last district in Gaza City that had not been subject to an Israeli ground invasion, and as a result many Palestinians who had not been able to evacuate south had sought refuge in the district. Despite this, the Israel Defense Forces had shelled and bombarded targets in Shuja'iyya for weeks before invading on December 4. On the 26th of December, Israel withdrew from Shuja'iyya, announcing that the local Hamas battalion had been defeated. Despite this, militants continued to attack Israeli forces within the town.

He was the leader of their crisis management team. His most notable recent responsibilities related to civilian disaster management, such as coordination and enforcement of restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

These points taken together reflect the degree to which Hamas and other Palestinian militias remain combat effective in and around Jabalia. Hamas and the other militias will almost certainly resume their efforts to reconstitute there as the IDF units have left.
