On 7 October 2023, Mia Schem (Hebrew : מייה שם), a French-Israeli woman, was abducted by Hamas during the Re'im music festival massacre, part of the 2023 Hamas attack on Israel. [1] Her abduction, a video of her in captivity in Gaza, and subsequent release on 30 November garnered international media attention, and she became a face of the hostage crisis during the Israel–Hamas war. Background

Mia Schem was 21 years old at the time of her abduction, and is a French-Israeli living in Shoham. Before the 7 October attacks, she worked at the Liav Tattoo studio. [3] She was abducted during the attack on the Nova music festival, near Re'im during the 7 October attacks. [1] [2]

Abduction

On 7 October 2023, Hamas militants attacked the Nova music festival near Re'im, Israel as part of the Hamas attack on Israel. During the ensuing Re'im music festival massacre, 364 civilians were killed and forty were taken hostage into the Gaza Strip. [4] Schem attended the festival with her friend, 28-year-old French-Israeli Elia Toledano. During the attack at 7:17 am, Schem messaged a friend saying, "They are shooting at us please come save us." [1]

Schem recounted that she was abducted by militants after she left her friend's burning vehicle during the attack. [5] Schem was shot in the arm at point blank by a Hamas terrorist, and she and Toledano were both abducted and taken hostage into Gaza. Toledano's body was later discovered by the Israel Defense Forces during an operation in December. [2] [6] A militant reportedly began to touch her upper body inappropriately and only stopped after she screamed and the militant noticed that she had been wounded. [5] Someone else dragged her into a car and drove her into Gaza. [6]

Captivity and treatment

Schem’s more recent report differs significantly from her initial reports on her captivity. She initially described being treated with care and hospitality. Schem was recorded immediately before being transported back to Israel in a Red Cross vehicle, stating in English that everyone had been very kind and the food was very good during her time as a hostage. [7] She later stated in an interview that she was required by Hamas to say this into the camera. [8]

Schem was reportedly initially held by a Gazan family with young kids who would open the door to the room where she was being held just to stare at her. [6] During her captivity, Schem was held in a room with her captor while his wife and children were in an adjacent room. Reportedly, the man's wife would bring him food, without bringing any for Schem, and some days she would not be allowed to eat at all. At one point, Schem's captor reportedly forced her to watch her mother speaking at a news conference calling for Schem's release. She reported being taunted and emotionally abused by her captors, who would say that she would be like Gilad Shalit. [6] [9]

After three days of captivity, Schem was dressed in a hijab and forced to undergo surgery for her gunshot wound. For days afterward, she reportedly received no painkillers and had to replace her own bandages. The day after the surgery, she was forced to film a video which was released by Hamas. [6] [9] Hamas released the video of Schem on 16 October, and was the first person to appear in a Hamas hostage video. In the video, Schem says she was injured and pleads to be returned to her family. She appeared pale and had a long, fresh scar clearly visible and an injured arm. [1] [10]

Schem was reportedly moved between Gazan homes via ambulance. [6] Several days before her release, Schem reported she was taken into Hamas tunnels 200 feet underground where she encountered other Israeli hostages for the first time during her captivity. [6] [9]

Efforts to release

Shortly after the release of the video showing Schem in October 2023, Schem's mother Keren reached out to world leaders with a focus on French President Emmanuel Macron to secure the release of Schem, calling her and other hostages abductions a crime against humanity. [11] The French government condemned the video and led Schem's mother Keren to hold a press conference in Tel Aviv calling for her immediate release. [10]

Release and aftermath

Schem was one of eight hostages freed after 54 days in captivity on 30 November as part of 105 hostages released during a temporary ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. She and Amit Soussana were handed over to the International Red Cross, and were accompanied by IDF and security service agents into Israel. [12] French President Emmanuel Macron described her release as a "great joy". The Hostages and Missing Persons Families Forum praised her "fighting spirit". [10] [6]

Several weeks later, Schem sat for a pair of televised interviews with Channel 12 and Channel 13 that aired on 29 December. Schem's account of her time in captivity mirrored the poor treatment recounted by other hostages and touched a particular nerve in Israel. [9] Schem recounted that she had "experienced Hell. Everyone there are terrorists... there are no innocent civilians, not one." [6] Also in December 2023, Schem planned and received a tattoo commemorating her experiences and memorializing those that were lost with the phrase "we will dance again" and date of 7 October 2023. [3]

After her release, Schem developed epilepsy from the trauma and lack of sleep during her captivity. [6] Schem was a guest at Elton John's 96th Academy Awards viewing party in March 2024. At the party she wore a rhinestone pin expressing solidarity with the hostages still held and was photographed with Sarah Idan, the former Miss Iraq 2016, who wore a dress which named the remaining female hostages. On 7 October 2023, the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian nationalist political organization Hamas, initiated a sudden attack on Israel from the Gaza Strip. As part of the attack, 364 individuals, mostly civilians, were killed and many more wounded at the Supernova Sukkot Gathering, an open-air music festival during the Jewish holiday of Shemini Atzeret near kibbutz Re'im. Hamas also took 40 people hostage, and men and women were reportedly subject to sexual and gender-based violence.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Be'eri massacre</span> 2023 massacre in Israel

On 7 October 2023, in the opening attacks of the Hamas-led October 7 attacks on Israel, Hamas militants carried out a massacre at Be'eri, an Israeli kibbutz near the Gaza Strip. Hundreds of Gazan militants and civilian looters attacked the kibbutz, killing and abducting civilians while facing resistance from armed residents. Israeli security forces regained control by the evening of October 8. A total of 101 Israeli civilians and 31 security personnel were killed and 32 hostages were taken from the kibbutz. At least 100 Gazan militants were also killed and 18 were captured.

On 7 October 2023, as part of the Hamas-led attack on Israel at the beginning of the Gaza war, Hamas and other Palestinian militant groups abducted 251 people from Israel to the Gaza Strip, including children, women, and elderly people. Almost half of the hostages are foreign nationals or have multiple citizenships, and some hostages were Negev Bedouins. The captives are likely being held in different locations in the Gaza Strip. Of all the hostages presumed alive in October 2024, 53 were civilians and 11 were military personnel according to AFP.

On 7 October 2023, during the Re'im music festival massacre, Shani Nicole Louk, a 22-year-old German-Israeli tattoo artist and influencer, was killed. Described by security experts and commentators as Hamas's social media propaganda, it became one of the first viral videos of the Israel–Hamas war. On 7 October 2023, as part of the surprise attack on Israel, Palestinian militants from the Gaza Strip, led by Hamas, invaded the Nir Oz kibbutz in southern Israel. Her arms were outstretched toward her boyfriend Avinatan Or, who was also kidnapped. As part of the Hamas-led attack on Israel on 7 October 2023, 23-year-old American-Israeli Hersh Goldberg-Polin was wounded and abducted by Hamas during the Re'im music festival massacre. He was held hostage for almost 11 months, until his body was recovered from a tunnel in Rafah in the Gaza Strip on 31 August 2024.

During the 2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel, Israeli women, girls, and men were reportedly subject to sexual violence, including rape and sexual assault by Hamas or other Gazan militants. The extent of sexual violence perpetuated by militants or whether sexual violence occurred at all during the attacks is disputed. Initially said to be "dozens" by Israeli authorities, they later clarified they could not provide a number. The militants involved in the attack are accused of having committed acts of gender-based violence, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. Hamas has denied that its fighters committed any sexual assaults, and has called for an impartial international investigation into the accusations.

On 7 October 2023, as part of the 2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel and the Nir Oz attack, the Palestinian Islamist militant organization Hamas abducted the Israeli-Argentinian/Peruvian Bibas family from the Nir Oz kibbutz: 9-month-old Kfir, 4-year-old Ariel, 32-year-old mother Shiri, and her 34-year-old husband Yarden. The youngest child, baby Kfir, was the youngest hostage taken in the 7 October 2023 attacks. Shiri's parents, who also lived on the kibbutz, were later found murdered.
