In February 2022, it was announced that Julio Torres would write, direct, executive produce, and star in the series for HBO, with Emma Stone and Dave McCary set to produce under their Fruit Tree banner. [6] In December 2022, HBO greenlit the series. [7]
In April 2024, it was announced Martine, Joe Rumrill, Julia Fox, Ziwe, Alexa Demie, Steve Buscemi and Kim Petras would appear in recurring and guest roles. [8]
On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes , 96% of 23 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 8.3/10.The website's consensus reads: "A colorful succession of sketches made cohesive by Julio Torres' one-of-a-kind sensibility, Fantasmas is another vivid variation on the wunderkind's imaginative themes." [9] [10] On Metacritic, the series holds a weighted average score of 87 out of 100, based on 14 critics, indicating "universal acclaim". [11]

The series follows a group of friends trying to turn their love of horror into a successful business, where most of their jobs consist of fabricating horror film-like situations and tricking people into thinking they are real. Los Espookys premiered on June 14, 2019 on HBO. In July 2019, the series was renewed for a second season which premiered on September 16, 2022. In December 2022, the series was canceled after two seasons. Los Espookys won a 2022 Peabody Award.
