Amritsar, historically also known as Rāmdāspur and colloquially as Ambarsar, is the second-most populous city in the Indian state of Punjab. The city is the administrative headquarters of the Amritsar district and is located in the Majha region of Punjab.

The Southern Railway, headquartered at Chennai, is one of the 18 zones of Indian Railways. It is the earliest of the 18 zones of the Indian Railways created in independent India. It was created on 14 April 1951 by merging three state railways, namely, the Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway, the South Indian Railway Company, and the Mysore State Railway. The South Indian Railway was originally created in the British colonial times as Great Southern India Railway Co founded in Britain in 1853 and registered in 1859. Its original headquarters was in Tiruchirappalli (Trichy) and was registered as a company in London only in 1890. At present, after re-organization of existing railway zones and creation of new zones undertaken by the Indian Railways between 2002–03, Southern Railway has emerged as the 4th largest zone after undertaking some gauge conversion projects and creation of new lines.

TPJ is the only railway station in southern railway to host Diesel-electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) shed. Tiruchirappalli Junction is the second largest railway station in Tamil Nadu and one of the busiest railway station in India. The Station was awarded with ‘GOLD’ rating in March 2020 by the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) for implementing various environment friendly measures. It is the first and only station in Southern Railway to get "GOLD" certification and 5th across Indian Railways.

The Delhi–Mumbai line is a major railway line in India. Linking the national capital of New Delhi with financial capital Mumbai, this railway line covers a distance of 1,386 kilometres (861 mi) across the Indian states of Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra. Mumbai Rajdhani Express which is the fastest Rajdhani Express travels on this line and covers the distance between Delhi and Mumbai in 15 hours and 40 minutes at an average speed of 91 km/hr. In 2016, Spanish high speed rail manufacturer Talgo conducted several trials of its high speed train between Mumbai. The train attained a maximum speed of 150 km/hr and completed the New Delhi-Mumbai Central journey in less than 12 hours.
