The Great Immigrants Award is an annual initiative by the Carnegie Corporation of New York to honor naturalized citizens of the United States who have made significant contributions to American society, democracy, and culture. Established in 2006, the award celebrates the legacy of Andrew Carnegie, a Scottish immigrant and philanthropist who founded the Carnegie Corporation. The award is announced each year on the Fourth of July.

Criteria and selection process

Honorees of the Great Immigrants Award are naturalized citizens of the United States who have demonstrated outstanding achievements and contributions in their respective fields. The selection process involves a comprehensive review of candidates' accomplishments, their impact on American society, and their commitment to the ideals of democracy and cultural diversity. The award has recognized individuals from a wide range of backgrounds, including business leaders, educators, artists, scientists, and public servants. [3]

A Carnegie library is a library built with money donated by Scottish-American businessman and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. A total of 2,509 Carnegie libraries were built between 1883 and 1929, including some belonging to public and university library systems. 1,689 were built in the United States, 660 in the United Kingdom and Ireland, 125 in Canada, and 25 others in Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Serbia, Belgium, France, the Caribbean, Mauritius, Malaysia, and Fiji.

Shirin R. Tahir-Kheli is an American political scientist who also served in the Department of State. She was sworn in as the First American Muslim Ambassador in July 1990. The Bishop John T. Nergis Mavalvala is a Pakistani-American astrophysicist. She is the Curtis and Kathleen Marble Professor of Astrophysics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where she is also the dean of the university's school of science. She was previously the Associate Head of the university's Department of Physics. The Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy is a private award for philanthropy, bestowed every second year to multiple people by the Carnegie family of institutions. In recent years the medal has been presented in New York.
