The Dawson Highway forms the southern boundary of the locality and the ridgeline of the Expedition Range ( 24°13′00″S149°03′00″E / 24.2166°S 149.05°E ) forms the eastern boundary. [3] [4]

The Shotover Range ( 24°10′00″S149°00′00″E / 24.1666°S 149.0000°E ) runs north-south through the centre of the locality including the national park. [5]
Apart from these protected areas, the predominant land use is grazing on native vegetation. [3]
Letter Camp ( 24°06′S148°48′E / 24.1°S 148.8°E ). and Wilsons Camp ( 24°05′00″S148°50′00″E / 24.0833°S 148.8333°E ) are two neighhourhoods in the north-west of the locality. [3] [6] [7]

Expedition Range was named on 27 November 1844 by explorer Ludwig Leichhardt who described it as "particularly striking and imposing". [4]
