The 2020 season is Kawasaki Frontale's 16th consecutive season in the J1 League, which they won for their third league title in four seasons. They also will compete in the Emperor's Cup and J.League Cup, the latter of which they are defending champions.

The 2022 J1 League, also known as the 2022 Meiji Yasuda J1 League for sponsorship reasons, was the 30th season of the J1 League, the top Japanese professional league for association football clubs, since its establishment in 1993.

The 2022 J2 League, also known as the 2022 Meiji Yasuda J2 League for sponsorship reasons, was the 24th season of the J2 League, the second-tier Japanese professional league for association football clubs, since its establishment in 1999.

The 2022 Júbilo Iwata season was the club's 50th season in existence and the first season back in the top flight of Japanese football. In addition to the domestic league, Júbilo Iwata participated in this season's editions of the Emperor's Cup and the J.League Cup. Finishing at last place at the J1 League, the club got relegated back to the J2 League after just a season back on the first division.

The 2022 season was Kashima Antlers' 30th consecutive season in the J1 League, the top flight of Japanese football since the introduction of professional football in 1993. The club finished the 2022 J1 League in fourth place, exactly the same position as the previous season. They also competed in the Emperor's Cup where they reached the semi-finals and the J.League Cup where they were knocked out at the play-off stage.

The 2022 J3 League, referred to as the 2022 Meiji Yasuda J3 League for sponsorship reasons, was the 9th season of J3 League under its current name, and the last season to not feature relegation, as from 2023, relegation from the J3 League to the JFL will be made possible. Iwaki FC won the J3 title for the first time in their history, in their debut campaign at the J3 League, just a year after being promoted from the JFL. They were promoted to the 2023 J2 League alongside Fujieda MYFC, who narrowly promoted with one point off the 3rd-placed team. Both teams won promotion for the J2 League for the first time.
