The Journal of Computational Biology is a monthly peer-reviewed scientific journal covering computational biology and bioinformatics. It was established in 1994 and is published by Mary Ann Liebert, a subsidiary of Sage Publishing. The journal was founded by Sorin Istrail (Brown University) and Michael S. Waterman (University of Southern California), and they served as editors-in-chief until 2020. Mona Singh (Princeton University) is the current editor-in-chief.
Because computational biology covers a wide range of techniques many of which are related to the understanding of bioinformatics, even though the latter term is not in its title, the journal accepts papers covering statistical, mathematical and computational analysis of techniques, as well as reports on their implementation. For both analysis and implementation the objective is to publish papers that will advance the field.
Research papers are very important, describing the action and conclusion of a research project that informs the computational biology research community. But they are not the only form of submission that is useful to the journal.
Because computational biology depends so much on the development and implementation of novel software, as well as upon the application of how it can be applied, the journal also accepts papers focusing specifically upon software. They need to describe it sufficiently to enable third-party users to apply it. These papers can be companion papers to primary research papers where the software was used.
In order to advance the field, the journal also accepts tutorial papers, focusing on explaining to the journal's audience importance new aspects of the field. Unlike the above papers these need to be prepared only when a discussion with the journal's editorial board has identified a need for them.
Like many academic journals, the Journal of Computational Biology draws upon the expertise of its academic contributors and as such will include review papers summarising an important sub-field of within its scope.
The journal can include other papers, often shorter, that relate to trends within the fields within its scope. These include:
Since 1997, authors of accepted proceedings papers at the Research in Computational Molecular Biology (RECOMB) conference have been invited to submit a revised version to a special issue of the journal. [1]
According to the Journal Citation Reports , the journal has a 2021 impact factor of 1.549. [2]
