The economy of Mauritania is still largely based on agriculture and livestock, even though most of the nomads and many subsistence farmers were forced into the cities by recurring droughts in the 1970s and 1980s.
Citizens of Mauritania have various transportation methods. Railways and highways connect major cities in the country. Mauritania is a coastal country so there are many ports along its coast and there are a few big rivers that run through the country. Lastly, there are 26 airports spread out throughout the country.
Zouérat is the largest town in northern Mauritania and the capital of Tiris Zemmour region, with an approximate population of 44,649 (2013). It lies at the eastern end of the Mauritania Railway to Nouadhibou.
Euralair was a charter airline based in France. Euralair was founded in 1964 as an air-taxi and executive charter company. In 1966 it became charter airline and operated its first charter flights in 1968 when it received the first Fokker F-27 (F-BRHL) on November 11, 1968, and the second (F-BRQL) on October 15, 1969; the last one sold to the Swiss company Belair in June 1973. In order to develop its charter activity, in November 1971 Euralair bought from Austrian Airline the first Sud Aviation Caravelle VIR (F-BSEL) and in 1973 the second (F-BTDL).
Air Mauritanie was the national airline of Mauritania from 1962 until it ceased operations in 2007 due to financial difficulties. It was based at Nouakchott International Airport, from where it operated domestic services, as well as flights to African destinations and Paris. The carrier had its headquarters in Nouakchott.

Mauritania Airlines previously Mauritania Airlines International, is an airline based in Nouakchott, Mauritania, serving as flag carrier of the country. The company was set up in December 2010 in response to the demise of Mauritania Airways. In April 2018, the airline rebranded from Mauritania Airlines International to Mauritania Airlines. It is the only airline flying domestically in Mauritania.
Air Afrique came into being in 1961 as a joint venture between Air France, Union Aéromaritime de Transport (UAT), and eleven former French-speaking colonies in Western and Central Africa, namely Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Dahomey, Gabon, Ivory Coast, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, and Upper Volta. Initially, the company inaugurated its services flying routes within those countries, and linking them as well. On 5 January 1962, the carrier inaugurated its first intercontinental flights with Boeing 707s leased from Air France serving the Paris–Dakar–Abidjan and Paris–Douala–Brazzaville routes.
Nouakchott–Oumtounsy International Airport is an international airport serving Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania. It is located 25 kilometres (16 mi) north of the city. The airport opened in June 2016 as the replacement for Nouakchott International Airport.
