This is a list of nations that have participated in the Commonwealth Games between 1930 and 2018. Participation in the Games is limited to member states of the Commonwealth of Nations and their territories. [1] Although there are 56 members of the Commonwealth of Nations, 72 teams currently participate in the Commonwealth Games as a number of dependent territories compete under their own flags. [2] The four Home Nations of the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) also send separate teams.
Only six teams have attended every Commonwealth Games: Australia, Canada, England, New Zealand, Scotland and Wales. The only Commonwealth members to have never taken part are Gabon and Togo, both of which joined the organisation in June 2022, although several territories of Commonwealth nations (such as Ascension Island, the Pitcairn Islands, and Tokelau) have also never sent teams.
This list includes all 72 current CGAs as well as a number of obsolete CGAs, arranged alphabetically. The three-letter country code is also listed for each CGA. Several nations have changed during the Games' history; name changes are explained by footnotes after the nation's name, and other notes are explained by footnotes linked within the table.

The Commonwealth Games is a quadrennial international multi-sport event among athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations, which consists mostly, but not exclusively, of territories of the former British Empire. The event was first held in 1930 as the British Empire Games and, with the exception of 1942 and 1946, has successively run every four years since. The event was called the British Empire Games from 1930 to 1950, the British Empire and Commonwealth Games from 1954 to 1966, and the British Commonwealth Games from 1970 to 1974. The event removed the word British from its title for the 1978 Games and has maintained its current name ever since.
The 1934 British Empire Games were the second edition of what is now known as the Commonwealth Games, held in England, from 4–11 August 1934. The host city was London, with the main venue at Wembley Park, although the track cycling events were in Manchester. Seventeen national teams took part, including the Irish Free State.
The 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games were held in Vancouver, British Columbia, from 30 July to 7 August 1954. This was the fifth edition of the event that would eventually become known as the Commonwealth Games, the second post-war Games, the second Canadian Games after the inaugural event in Hamilton and the first event since the name change from British Empire Games took effect in 1952.
The 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games were held in Cardiff, Wales, from 18 to 26 July 1958. It was the sixth edition of what would come to be known as the Commonwealth Games, the second Games held in the United Kingdom, and the second held under the name British Empire and Commonwealth Games.
The 1966 British Empire and Commonwealth Games were held in Kingston, Jamaica, from 4 to 13 August 1966. This was the first time that the Games had been held outside the so-called White Dominions. The event was followed by the 1966 Commonwealth Paraplegic Games for wheelchair athletes. Jamaica remains the only host nation of a Commonwealth Games that did not win at least one gold medal in its own games.
This page shows the all-time medal table for the Commonwealth Games since the first British Empire Games in 1930. The table is updated as of 8 August 2022, the day the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham ended. These rankings sort by the number of gold medals earned by a country. The number of silvers is taken into consideration next and then the number of bronze. If, after the above, countries are still tied, equal ranking is given and they are listed alphabetically. This follows the system used by the IOC, IAAF and BBC. The source for this data are the tallies listed at the Commonwealth Games Federation's website.
A Commonwealth Games Association (CGA) is a national sports council of the Commonwealth Sports movement. Each association is responsible for organising, supporting and overseeing their national team for both the Commonwealth Games and the Commonwealth Youth Games. The associations are subject to the rules of, and report to, the Commonwealth Games Federation. As well as promoting sports nationally, an association can also place a bid for the Commonwealth Games for a potential host city. While some nations have a stand-alone association dealing exclusively with the Commonwealth Games, in many of the Commonwealth nations, the local National Olympic Committee performs the function of Commonwealth Games Association for that nation. In a few nations, such as Eswatini and Malawi, the local organisation carries both names in its normal title.
A team representing Ireland as an independent state or polity has competed at the Summer Olympic Games since 1924, and at the Winter Olympic Games since 1992.
Representation of the island of Ireland at the British Empire Games has varied:
South Africa under apartheid was subjected to a variety of international boycotts, including on sporting contacts. There was some debate about whether the aim of the boycott was to oppose segregation in sport or apartheid in general, with the latter view prevailing in later decades. While the National Party introduced apartheid in 1948, it added sport-specific restrictions from the late 1950s, on interracial sport within South Africa and international travel by nonwhite athletes. The international federations (IFs) governing various sports began to sanction South Africa, both in response to the new restrictions and in reflection of the broader anti-racism of national federations in newly independent postcolonial states. By the early 1970s, South African national teams were excluded from most Olympic sports, although South Africans competed in individual events in some, mainly professional, sports through the 1980s. Although from the mid-1970s the National Party relaxed the application of segregation provisions in relation to sport, this failed to alleviate the boycott, which continued until the end of apartheid.
Southern Rhodesia first participated as Rhodesia in the Olympic Games in 1928, when it sent two boxers to Amsterdam, both of whom were eliminated in their second bout. The colony did not appear at the Games under a Rhodesian banner until 1960, when it sent a fourteen-athlete delegation as part of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. In Rome, two sailors, Alan David Butler and Christopher Bevan, finished fourth, which was Rhodesia's best result until it became Zimbabwe in 1980. Southern Rhodesia sent 29 competitors, including a field hockey team, to the 1964 Summer Games, which was its last Olympic appearance under the Rhodesian banner.
Lawn bowls at the 2018 Commonwealth Games was held at the Broadbeach Bowls Club in the Gold Coast, Australia from April 5 to 13.
Weightlifting was one of the sports contested at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, held in Birmingham, England. This was the nineteenth staging of weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games since its inclusion in 1950, and the second staging within England specifically.
Swimming was among the sports contested at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, held in Birmingham, England. The sport had been staged in all twenty-one previous editions of the Games thus far, and will be contested in England for the third time.
Athletics was one of the core sports that was held at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England. As a founding sport, athletics had appeared consistently since its introduction at the 1911 Inter-Empire Games, the recognized precursor to the Commonwealth Games.
Gymnastics competitions at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, were held from 29 July to 6 August 2022. The sport made its tenth appearance since its 1978 debut and its second appearance within England specifically, spread across twenty events.
Judo competitions at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, were held from 1 to 3 August 2022. After the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, This was the fifth time the sport has been on the program, since it was introduced as a demonstration sport in 1986, and made official at the next edition in 1990. Its second appearance within England specifically, spread across fourteen weight categories. Unlike other international competitions where each country can only enter one athlete per weight. Each participating country can enter up to 2 participants per weight. The sport will give two bronze medals, one for the winner from repechage and another for the athlete who won the third place event.
Squash is among the sports contested at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, to be held in Birmingham, England. This will be the seventh staging of squash at the Commonwealth Games since its debut in 1998, and the second staging within England specifically.
Boxing is one of the sports contested at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, to be held in Birmingham, England at the National Exhibition Centre Hall 4. It is one of the founding sports, having featured in every edition of the Games since the inaugural 1930 edition; the boxing competition will take place within England for the third time.
