The following describes the population of towns in Tamil Nadu, India.

Urban Administration

Tamil Nadu, the 11th largest state in India by area. As of 2020, the state has 38 districts, 21 municipal corporations and 138 municipalities. [1] [2] On 14 February 2019, the state government announced in the Assembly that Hosur and Nagercoil will be upgraded to municipal corporations. Avadi became municipal corporation on 19 June 2019.and 24 August 2021 Government of TamilNadu upgrade 6 special grade municipality into city corporation there are Kumbakonam, Karur, Kanchipuram, Tambaram, Cuddalore and Sivakasi [3] [4]

Developmental administration in Tamil Nadu is carried out by Panchayat Unions (called blocks) in rural areas. These panchayat unions have a set of panchayat villages under them. In urban areas, the governance is done by municipal corporations, municipalities or town panchayats based on the size of the town. [5] The Revenue divisions and Taluks of the state. These administrative units are classified based on the district. There are 38 districts in Tamil Nadu and for revenue administration purposes, each district is divided into divisions, which are further divided to Taluks. [5] Each of these Taluks have a list of revenue villages under them. Tahsildar is the head of these Taluks.


Demographics

Among the cities in 2011, the state capital, Chennai, was the most populous city in the state, followed by Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli , Salem and Tiruppur respectively. [6]

Katthivakkam is an residential and industrial area located in the northern part of Chennai. It is a part of zone 1 in Greater Chennai Corporation. It is under Thiruvottiyur taluk in Chennai district. It is a part of Thiruvottiyur(state assembly constituency) and Chennai North. Formerly a town and a municipality of Thiruvallur district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, it has now been absorbed by Chennai city in September 2011 and within Chennai District limit since January 2018. The neighbourhood is served by Katthivakkam railway station. As of 2011, the town had a population of 36,617.

Kurichi is a neighborhood of Coimbatore city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It was upgraded to a municipality in 2004, it was recently merged with the Coimbatore Corporation. As of 2011, the town had a population of 123,770

Mettupalayam is a municipality town and taluk headquarters of Mettupalayam Taluk in the Coimbatore district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, a suburb of Coimbatore. It is the third largest town in the Coimbatore district after Coimbatore and Pollachi. It's located to the North of the Coimbatore city on the way to Ooty in the foothills of Nilgiri hills. As of 2011, the town had a population of 66,595. Mettupalayam railway station is the starting point of Nilgiri Mountain Railway and it operates the only rack railway in India connecting Ooty and Mettupalayam.

Thuraiyur is a town and a municipality in the Tiruchirappalli district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It was upgraded to a III Grade Municipality from Town Panchayat on 17 January 1970, and to a II Grade Municipality in May 1998. It was upgraded to Selection Grade Municipality in the year 2008. It is also a taluka. It is located 310 km away from Chennai.

Mazhanadu is a region between Tondai Nadu and Karnataka, formerly known as Mazhavarnadu. This region was owned by the Chera Dynasty. It includes the Districts of Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri. In the ancient sangam age this region was ruled by Mazhavar King Kolli Mazhavan. Famous Sangam poet Avvaiyar had cordial relations with the Mazhavar chieftains like Athiyamān Nedumān Añci of Thagadoor and Valvil Ori of Kollimalai. Mazhanadu was divided into two major divisions, namely Mel-Mazhanadu and Keezh-Mazhanadu (Eastern-Mazhanadu). Keezh-Mazhanadu was once ruled by Kolli Mazhavan and his successors, and was well-known for its water resources. It was mentioned in a Tamil poem.
