Mocean EnergyLtd. is a wave energy technology developer, based in Edinburgh and Aberdeen. [1] They are developing a hinged-raft attenuator wave energy converter (WEC) at various scales for different markets.

Mocean received funding through the Wave Energy Scotland Novel Wave Energy Convertor (NWEC) calls to develop a series of small-scale prototypes, the largest device called Blue X had a rated power output of 10 kW and was tested at EMEC in 2021. This device was subsequently tested off the coast of Orkney in the 'Renewables for Subsea Power' (RSP) project. [2]

The company is developing the next iteration Blue Horizon 250 WEC through the EuropeWave R&D programme. [3]

Device concept

Mocean is developing a floating hinged-raft WEC, which comprises two sections that can rotate around a central nacelle which contains a power take-off generator. As waves pass the device it flexes, with the middle moving up or down relative to the ends, and this motion is harvested to generate electricity. [3] Unlike some other wave energy devices, the Mocean WEC is 'self-referenced', meaning it does not rely on a reaction again the mooring to generate power. This allows a more conventional mooring system, and for the WEC to be deployed in deep waters. [4]

The device has a unique geometry that is designed to improve performance and also survivability by passing through large waves. [5] The two sections are able to rotate freely with large hinge rotations, increasing survivability. [6] The company uses software to explore various geometries, searching for optimal new shapes for the device allowing it to generate more power. [4] The fore and aft sections are different to each in size and shape but both have sloping ends, this geometry is dissimilar to previous hinged raft concepts. [7]

The floating device also has small solar panels mounted on it to increase the amount of power generated. [4]

History

Mocean Energy was founded in Edinburgh in 2015 by Dr. Cameron McNatt and Dr. Chris Retzler; both of whom have a PhD from the University of Edinburgh. [8] Prior to working at Mocean, Retzler was a founding member and Principal Scientist at Pelamis Wave Power until that company went into administration in November 2014. [9]

Wave Energy Scotland NWEC programme

The Mocean concept was initially developed through the Wave Energy Scotland Novel Wave Energy Convertor (NWEC) programme, stages 1 to 3. This was a competitive staged development process with stage-gate assessments, funded through pre-commercial procurement.

Mocean was one of eight concepts selected for NWEC Stage 1. [10] They performed numerical modelling and optimisation, tank testing at FloWaveTT using both 1:50 and 1:20 scale models, plus concept engineering and cost modelling. [7]

In April 2017, Mocean was one of five companies successful in progressing to NWEC Stage 2, with a further £730k in funding. [10] [11]

NWEC Stage 3 saw Mocean test a 28 m long, 38 tonne Blue X device rated at 10 kW in the EMEC Scapa Flow scale test site for five months from June 2021, gaining valuable operational experience. The device operated at sea for 154 days, with steady output around 5 kW and instantaneous peaks of up to 30 kW. [12] [13]

The Blue X was fabricated by AJS Production in Cowdenbeath, before being shipped by road and freight ferry to Aberdeen then Orkney. [14] It was originally planned to test the Blue X at the EMEC Billia Croo grid-connected test site, [15] however this did not happen due to the RSP project.

Renewables for subsea power

In 2022, Mocean announced the had secured £730k of equity funding to re-use their Blue X prototype in a project aimed at helping decarbonise the oil & gas industry by providing power to autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) and other subsea infrastructure. Project partner Verlume supplied a Halo battery that powered an AUV from Transmark Subsea. [16] The battery was charged via an umbilical cable by the Mocean Blue X WEC. [17]

The project was initially proposed to be four months, [16] however this was extended, and in March 2024 the project was concluded following a 12-month sea deployment. [2] Mocean released video footage in October 2023 of the device operating during Storm Babet in conditions with 6–7m significant wave height. [6]

The project gained support from several major oil companies, including Baker Hughes, PTTEP, Serica Energy, Harbour Energy, and more recently TotalEnergies and Shell Technology. It was also supported by the Net Zero Technology Centre. [16]

EuropeWave

Mocean is developing the next generation 250 kW Blue Horizon WEC through the EuropeWave programme, a successor to the Wave Energy Scotland Novel Wave Energy Convertor programme they successfully completed in 2021. The Blue Horizon will produce about 25 times the power of the Blue X, from a device about 2.5 times as long. [18]

In 2022, Mocean announced they would be testing 1:50 and 1:25 scale 3D-printed prototypes of the Blue Horizon in the FloWave test facility as part of EuropeWave Stage 1. [18]

The company was one of five successful in progressing to Stage 2 of the EuropeWave programme in September 2022, to progress the front-end engineering design of the device, ready for real sea testing in Stage 3. [19]

Mocean was awarded €3.7m (£3.2m) in September 2023 to build and test a 250 kW prototype as part of EuropeWave Stage 3. It is planned to test the device at the grid connected EMEC Billia Croo test site in 2025, for a full year at sea. [12] [20]

The Pelamis Wave Energy Converter was a technology that used the motion of ocean surface waves to create electricity. The machine was made up of connected sections which flex and bend as waves pass; it is this motion which is used to generate electricity.

The Wave Hub is a floating offshore wind and wave power research project. The project is developed approximately 10 miles (16 km) off Hayle, on the north coast of Cornwall, United Kingdom. The hub was installed on the seabed in September 2010, and is a 'socket' sitting on the seabed for wave energy converters to be plugged into. It will have connections to it from arrays of up to four kinds of wave energy converter. A cable from the hub to main land will take electrical power from the devices to the electric grid. The total capacity of the hub will be 20 MWe. The estimated cost of the project is £28 million.

The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) Ltd is a UKAS accredited test and research center focused on wave and tidal power development, based in the Orkney Islands, UK. The centre provides developers with the opportunity to test full-scale grid-connected prototype devices in wave and tidal conditions.

Pelamis Wave Power designed and manufactured the Pelamis Wave Energy Converter – a technology that uses the motion of ocean surface waves to create electricity. The company was established in 1998 and had offices and fabrication facilities in Leith Docks, Edinburgh, Scotland. It went into administration in November 2014.

Narec, since 2014 known as the National Renewable Energy Centre, is a part of the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult, a British technology innovation and research centre for offshore wind power, wave energy, tidal energy and low carbon technologies. ORE Catapult's head office is in Glasgow, Scotland. The centre operates multi-purpose offshore renewable energy test and demonstration facilities. It is similar to other centres, such as NREL in the US and National Centre for Renewable Energies (CENER) in Spain. The National Renewable Energy Centre is based in Blyth, Northumberland.

Ocean Power Technologies (OPT) is a U.S. publicly owned renewable energy company, providing electric power and communications solutions, services and related for remote offshore applications. The company's PowerBuoy wave energy conversion technology is theoretically scalable to hundreds of megawatts and the generated energy from wave power can be supplied to the grid via submarine cables. Several projects were undertaken around the world, but the economic viability of the theoretical concept has been problematic.

The Oyster was a hydro-electric wave energy device that used the motion of ocean waves to generate electricity. It was made up of a Power Connector Frame (PCF), which is bolted to the seabed, and a Power Capture Unit (PCU). The PCU is a hinged buoyant flap that moves back and forth with movement of the waves. The movement of the flap drives two hydraulic pistons that feed high-pressured water to an onshore hydro-electric turbine, which drives a generator to make electricity. Oyster was stationed at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) at its Billia Croo site in Orkney, Scotland until the company ceased trading in 2015.

Marine energy or marine power refers to the energy carried by ocean waves, tides, salinity, and ocean temperature differences. The movement of water in the world's oceans creates a vast store of kinetic energy, or energy in motion. Some of this energy can be harnessed to generate electricity to power homes, transport and industries.

The Aegir wave farm was a planned wave farm off the south west of Shetland. The project was developed by Aegir Wave Power, a 2009 formed joint venture of Vattenfall and the wave power technology developer Pelamis Wave Power. The wave farm would have had capacity from 10 MW potentially up to 100 MW. Following the collapse of Pelamis in November 2014, the project was cancelled by Vattenfall in February 2015.

The Saltire Prize, named after the flag of Scotland, was a national award for advances in the commercial development of marine energy.

Waves4Power is a Swedish-based developer of buoy-based Offshore Wave Energy Converter (OWEC) systems. A demonstration plant was installed in 2016 at the Runde Environmental Centre in Norway, where testing was conducted with WaveEL, an offshore buoy. This was connected via sub-sea cable to the shore based power grid.

Wave Energy Scotland (WES) is a technology development body set up by the Scottish Government to facilitate the development of wave energy in Scotland. It was set up in 2015 and is a subsidiary of Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) based in Inverness. WES manages several projects resulting from its pre-commercial procurement funding calls.

Sotenäs is a wave farm located in Kungshamn, in the municipality of Sotenäs, Sweden. The facility consists of 36 wave energy converters (WECs), with a total installed capacity of nearly 3 MW. Each WEC generates power using point absorber buoys connected to linear generators on the seabed. The generators are located at a depth of 50 m (160 ft). According to Seabased, the technology used in the project could deliver electricity for under 10 cents per kWh. Initial announcements stated that the power plant would eventually expand to around 10 MW capacity, but in 2017 Seabased announced it would no longer expand the plant beyond the 36 WECs already in place.

Nova Innovation Ltd is a Scottish developer of tidal stream turbines, based in Leith, Edinburgh. They deployed their first 30 kW turbine in 2014. Since then, they have developed and tested a 100 kW seabed mounded two-bladed horizontal-axis tidal stream turbine, and plan to scale this up in future. Up to six of these turbines have been deployed simultaneously in the Bluemull Sound, Shetland since 2016.

Many tidal stream generators have been developed over the years to harness the power of tidal currents flowing around coastlines. These are also called tidal stream turbines (TST), tidal energy converters (TEC), or marine hydro-kinetic (MHK) generation. These turbines operate on a similar principle to wind turbines, but are designed to work in a fluid approximately 800 times more dense than air which is moving at a slower velocity. Note that tidal barrages or lagoons operate on a different principle, generating power by impounding the rising and falling tide.

Minesto AB is a Swedish developer of electricity producing tidal kite turbines, based in Gothenburg. They also have a manufacturing base in Holyhead, North Wales, and a test facility at Portaferry, Northern Ireland.

CorPower Ocean AB is a wave energy device developer, headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden. They also have offices in Oslo, Viana do Castelo, and Stromness. The office in Viana do Castelo is an R&D centre that also serves as the manufacturing and service centre for the wave energy converters (WEC).
