Narayan Joshi 'Karayal' is the Gujarati and Kutchi language author and story writer. [1]

Works

Joshi founded Kachchhi Sahitya Kala Sangh in 1999 which works for the imparting basics of Kutchi to people who are not acquainted with it. [2] He has written Kachchhi Pathavali in two parts which has been standardised by Gujarat Council of Educational Research and Training to learn Kutchi. [2]

Recognition

Joshi was awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award of India, for his services in the field of literature and education in 2020. [3] [4] [5] [6]

She is known for her Gujarati plays done with her husband Pravin Joshi in the 1970s.

Carlos G. Vallés Spanish-Indian Jesuit priest and author

Carlos González Vallés S.J., popularly known as Father Vallés, was a Spanish-Indian Jesuit priest and author. He lived in India for five decades and wrote extensively in Gujarati and on mathematics. He also wrote in English and Spanish. He was a recipient of the Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak, the highest award in Gujarati literature, in 1978. He was awarded the Padma Shri posthumously in 2021.

Bholabhai Patel

Bholabhai Patel was an Indian Gujarati author. He taught numerous languages at Gujarat University and did comparative studies of literature in different languages. He translated extensively and wrote essays and travelogues. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2008.

Bhikhudan Gadhvi Indian folk singer (born 1948)

Bhikhudan Govindbhai Gadhvi is an Indian folk singer and songwriter, known as a proponent of Dayro, a narrative singing tradition of Gujarat. He is a recipient of the Gujarat Gaurav Award of the Government of Gujarat and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2016, for his contributions to folk music.

Gujarat Sahitya Akademi Gujrati language authority in India

The Gujarat Sahitya Akademi or Gujarat Sahitya Academy, established in 1981, is a government institution dedicated to the development of the languages spoken in Gujarat, India and their literature. Gujarati, an official language of Gujarat, is one of them; the others are Hindi, Sanskrit, Kutchi, Sindhi and Urdu. As of 2017, Vishnu Pandya is the chairman of the Akademi.

Joravarsinh Jadav Indian folklorist

Joravarsinh Danubhai Jadav is an Indian folklorist and proponent of the folk arts from Gujarat. Exposed to folk culture as a child, he studied history and culture in Ahmedabad. He has written and edited more than 90 works on folk culture, folk literature, and folk arts. He established the Gujarat Lok Kala Foundation for the promotion of folk arts. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2019.

Damayanti Beshra Writer and poet

Damayanti Beshra is a Santali author and Adivasi researcher. She is known for literature of Santali language. In 2020, she was honoured by Padma Shri for her remarkable contribution to Santhali literature.

Dr. Shanti Rai is an Indian gynaecologist. She was awarded the Padma Shri in 2020 for her contribution in medicine. She hails from the Gopalganj district of Bihar. She used to practice in Siwan but now practices in Patna.She is the Head of the Department of gynecology in the Patna Medical College.

Mohammed Sharif, popularly known as Sharif Chacha, is an Indian bicycle mechanic and social worker from Uttar Pradesh. He is known for performing last rites for over 25000 unidentified and unclaimed dead bodies. He was conferred with India's fourth-highest civilian award the Padma Shri in 2020 for his contribution in social work.

Benichandra Jamatia was a Tripuri Indian folk writer and litterateur, known for his contribution to the fields of literature and education in Tripura. He is credited with introducing the baul singing tradition of West Bengal in Kokborok language for the first time. In 2020, he was awarded the Padma Shri (2020), the fourth-highest civilian award in India. He died at his home on 14 December 2020.

Khalil Dhantejvi Indian poet and novelist (1935–2021)

Khalil Ismail Makrani, popularly known by his pen-name, Khalil Dhantejvi was a poet and novelist from Gujarat, India. He wrote poems in Gujarati and Urdu. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2022 by government of India.
