Tekkatte Narayan Shanbhag (1925-2009) was an Indian scholar, bookseller and the founder of Strand Book Stores. [1] He was credited with working to transform bookselling into a personal experience, prompting the writer Kushwant Singh, on a BBC show, to call Strand the only personal book shop in India. [2] He was honoured by the Government of India in 2003 with Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award. [3]
Thekkatte Narayan Shanbhag was born in 1925 in Thekkate, a hamlet near Mangalore, in the Indian state of Karnataka to a wealthy grocer. [1] [2] [4] His father died when Shanbhag was aged just over two and he had a difficult childhood. [2] [4] Unable to pay for the school fees, he appeared for and passed a scholarship examination which paid for his further school education. [2] [4] Later, he took up a part-time job and joined St. Xavier's College, Mumbai where he completed his graduate studies. [2] [4]
With a passion for books, he started his career in 1948 [4] by opening a small kiosk to sell books at the Strand Cinema, Mumbai, a cinema showing mostly Hollywood movies. [2] After initial struggles, business began to pick up and Shanbhag moved the book shop in 1953 to a larger space in Fort, Mumbai. [2] He was reported to have interacted with the customers on a personal level and several dignitaries such as Sir Ambalal Sarabhai, Mirza Ismail, then Diwan of Mysore, T. T. Krishnamachari, Y. B. Chavan and Jawaharlal Nehru were known to have become his customers. [1] [2] [4] He was known to be first bookseller in India to break the Net Book Agreement of 1900 by offering a 20 percent discount on the published prices and allowed customers to have unhindered browsing at his shops. [2] The experience is reported to have expanded his customer base which included A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, J. R. D. Tata, Khushwant Singh, V. S. Naipaul, Soli Sorabjee, N. R. Narayana Murthy, Nani Palkhivala, G. D. Birla, Keshub Mahindra and Azim Premji. [2] [4]
Shanbhag died, aged 85, at his residence in Mumbai on 27 February 2009. [2]
The Government of India honoured him with the civilian award of Padma Shri in 2003. [2] In 2006, he received Netaji Subash Chandra Bose National Award. [4] Face to Face with Indian Publishing Professionals, a book by S. K. Ghai, has dedicated a chapter on Shanbhag. [5] [6]
Udit Narayan is an Indian playback singer whose songs have been featured mainly in Hindi films. He has also sung in various other languages including Telugu, Kannada, Tamil, Bengali, Odia, Bhojpuri, Nepali, Malayalam, Assamese, Bagheli and Maithili. He has won four National Film Awards and five Filmfare Awards with twenty nominations among many others. The Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri in 2009 and the Padma Bhushan in 2016 for his contribution to arts and culture. As many as 21 of his tracks feature in BBC's "Top 40 Bollywood Soundtracks of all time".
Samta Prasad was an Indian classical musician and tabla player from the Benares gharana. He played tabla in many Hindi films including, Meri Surat Teri Ankhen (1963) and Sholay (1975), and film music composers Rahul Dev Burman and Bappi Lahiri were his disciples.
Taalyogi Pandit Suresh Talwalkar is an Indian musician who plays the percussion instrument tabla.
Yarlagadda Lakshmi Prasad is an Indian writer and politician. He is the Chairman of the A.P. Hindi Academy; Professor in Hindi at Andhra University, Visakhapatnam, India, and is a former Rajya Sabha Member. He received the fourth highest Indian civilian honour of the Padma Shri in 2003, followed by the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2010. The Government of India honoured him again in 2016 with the Padma Bhushan, the third highest Indian civilian award.
Sudarshan Sahoo is an Indian sculpture artist from Puri in Odisha. He was awarded India's second highest civilian award Padma Vibhushan in 2021 and India's fourth highest civilian award Padma Shri in 1988.
Vashishtha Narayan Singh was an Indian academic. He was a child prodigy and completed his PhD in 1969. He taught mathematics at various institutes in the 1960s and 1970s. Singh was diagnosed with schizophrenia in the early 1970s and was admitted to a psychiatric hospital. He went missing during a train journey and was found years later. He was again admitted to the hospital and later returned to academia in 2014. He was awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award of India, posthumously in 2020.
Brahmdeo Ram Pandit is an Indian studio potter and craftsman, known for his expertise in making pottery. He was honoured by the Government of India, in 2013, by bestowing on him the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his contributions to the field of art.
Deviprasad Dwivedi is an Indian writer and teacher, known for his scholarship in Sanskrit literature. The Government of India honoured Sharma in 2011, with the fourth highest Indian civilian award of the Padma Shri and followed it up with Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian award, in 2017.
Elangbam Nilakanta Singh (1927-2000) was an Indian poet and critic, considered by many as one of the pioneers of modern Meitei literature. A recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1987, Nilakanta Singh was honored by the Government of India, in 2000, with the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri.
Sadashiv Vasantrao Gorakshkar was an Indian writer, art critic, historian, museologist and a director of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, erstwhile Prince of Wales Museum, Mumbai. He is credited with the restoration of Lakshmibai Pitre Kalasangrahalaya, a museum in Devrukh, Maharashtra to its present state.
Khushdeva Singh (1902–1985) was an Indian physician and social worker, known for his contributions towards the treatment of tuberculosis in India. Born in Patiala in the Indian state of Punjab, he served at the Hardinge Sanatorium, Dharampur in Himachal Pradesh for most of his service. He was the founder of the Lepers' Welfare Society, Patiala for the rehabilitation of leprosy patients of the region. Reports credit him as a humanist with a secular vision; he was known to have treated several Muslims during the Partition of India. He is the author of the books In Dedication and Love is Stronger Than Hate. In 1957, the Government of India honoured him with Padma Shri, the fourth-highest Indian civilian award, for his service to the nation. The Padma Shri Dr. Khushdeva Singh Hospital for Chest Diseases in Patiala is named after him.
Daji Bhatawadekar, was an Indian theatre personality and film and television actor. He was credited with the revival of Sanskrit and Marathi theatre in India. A winner of the Sangeet Natak Akademi award in 1965, he was honoured by the Government of India in 1967, with the award of Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award for his contributions to the society.
Amrik Singh Cheema was an Indian civil servant, author, an advocate of green revolution and a former vice chancellor of the Punjab Agricultural University, known for his contributions to the agricultural initiatives of the Indian government. He was honoured by the Government of India in 1969, with the award of Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award for his contributions to the society.
Thangam Elizabeth Philip (1921–2009) was an Indian nutritionist and a pioneer of hospitality education in India. She was the Principal Emeritus of the Institute of Hotel Management, Mumbai and was the author of several books on cookery. A recipient of the FAO Ceres Medal and the Knighthood of the Order of Cordon Bleu Du Sant Esprit of France, Philip was awarded the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1976.
Shobha Deepak Singh is an Indian cultural impresario, photographer, writer, classical dancer and the director of Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra, a Delhi-based cultural organization which promotes music and performing arts, through its schools and stage shows. She is known for her contributions for the revival of Mayurbhanj Chhau, a tribal martial dance form from Odisha. The Government of India awarded her the fourth highest civilian award of the Padma Shri in 1999, for her contributions to Arts and culture.
Jagdev Singh Guleria is an Indian general physician, cardiologist and a former Dean and Professor of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. He is the senior consultant of General Medicine at Sitaram Bhartia Institute of Science and Research and an Emeritus Professor of the National Academy of Medical Sciences. He received the fourth highest Indian civilian honour of the Padma Shri in 2003.
Tehemton Erach Udwadia was an Indian surgeon and gastroenterologist, considered by many as the father of laparoscopic surgery in India. He was a general surgeon at two Mumbai hospitals, Breach Candy Hospital and Hinduja Hospital and was the founder president of the Indian Association of Gastrointestinal Endo-Surgeons. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2006 and the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan in 2017 for his contributions to Indian medicine.
Gajendra Narayan Singh was an Indian musician, musicologist, writer, art historian and a former chairman of the Bihar Sangeet Natak Academy, the apex body of the Government of Bihar for music and drama. He is the author of four books on music, Mehfil, a historical reference book of music, Swar Gandh, a book of biosketches and music-related anecdotes, Kaljayee Sur: Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, a biographical work on the life and music of Bhimsen Joshi, and Surile Logon ki Sangath, which details the lives and music of some of the notable Hindustani classical musicians. His efforts are also known in promoting music and musicians of Bihar and he is reported to have initiated scholarship schemes for musicians during his tenure as the head of the Bihar Sangeet Natak Academy. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2007, for his contributions to Indian music. His life has been documented in an autobiography, Bihar ke Sangeeth Parampara, which was published by Delhi Public School, Ludhiana, in 2014.
Shyam Narayan Arya is an Indian physician, writer and the former National Professor and dean of the College of General practitioners of the Indian Medical Association (IMA_GP). He has published several medical papers and monographs, has contributed chapters to books published by others and has delivered keynote addresses in many medical conferences. He is an alumnus of the Patna Medical College and Hospital of the Patna University and a Fellow of the Indian Association of Clinical Medicine (IACM), where he has served as its National President. He is a recipient of the Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian medical award. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2008, for his contributions to medicine.
T. S. Shanbhag was an Indian bookseller who was the owner of Bangalore's famous Premier Bookshop.
