Prithvi Nath Kaula (1924-2009) was an Indian librarian, Library and Information Sciences specialist and author who worked with the Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi, India. Kaula authored sixty books and monographs, six professional journals (founder-editor), over 400 scholarly journal, over 400 peer review, 43 bibliographies and 6000 notes. Kaula was also the recipient of the Padma Shri award in the year 2004. [1] [2]

Early life

Prithvi Nath Kaula was born in 1924 in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, British India into a Kashmiri Pandit family. His family belonged to the lower middle class. He completed his higher education Faculty of Arts in the Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi. In 1947, he was employed as a Librarian with the Birla Education Trust in Pilani. He later on became the Librarian at Central Library, BHU, Head of Department of Library and Information Science, BHU and the Dean of Faculty of Arts in the Banaras Hindu University. [1] [3]

Gopinath Kaviraj was an Indian Sanskrit scholar, Indologist and philosopher. First appointed in 1914 a librarian, he was the Principal of Government Sanskrit College, Varanasi from 1923 to 1937. He was also the editor of the Sarasvati Bhavana Granthamala during that period.

Pandit Balwant Rai Bhatt was a noted Indian composer and musician of Hindustani Vocal Music. He was also known as Bhavrang (भावरंग). He died at his home in Varanasi on 2 May 2016.

Kodethur Narasimha Udupa (1920–1992) was an Indian surgeon, medical administrator, a pioneer of integrative medicine and the founder director of the Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University (BHU). Born in Udupi in the South Indian state of Karnataka, His father was Tamayya Udupa scholar in Sanskrit and Jyotish belonging to Shivalli brahmin community. Prakash Chandra Sood is a nuclear physicist and professor of nuclear physics from Punjab, India. Sood is known for his tenure at the Banaras Hindu University(BHU), where he served as the head of Physics department in 1969 and later set up the first Van de Graffe Accelerator at BHU. In 2023, he was awarded one of India's highest civilian award Padma Shri for literature and education.
