V L Nghaka (born 1930) is an academician from the Indian State of Mizoram known for his efforts for the propagation and development of the Hindi language in Mizoram. He authored the first Hind-Mizo dictionary and got it published in the year 1965. [1] In the year 2022, Govt of India honoured V L Nghaka by conferring the Padma Shri award for his contributions to literature and education. [2] As per his citation for Padma Shri award, "He built a cultural bridge between Hindi and Mizo language by drafting a Hindi-Mizo dictionary. As an interpreter, he was instrumental in bringing the government and Mizo people closer.” [3]

Early life

V L Nghaka was born in 1930. He is the first person from the Mizo ethnic group to pass the Shiksha Visharad a qualifying examination for school teachers. Much later, in 1976, he secured the MA degree and in 1980 the MEd degree.

Early in life he became an ardent promoter of the Hindi language in Mizoram. In 1954, when the present Mizoram State had not been created, he took the initiative to establish the first Mizoram Assam Hindi Prachar Samiti at Kawnpui Village in the northern part of Mizoram. This institution later evolved and developed into the Mizoram Hindi Prachar Sabha. At the time of the PadmaShri award to Nghaka, the Sabha has 18 schools with BA Hindi course, 35 Prachar centres and 64 Vidhyalayas.

Nghaka is the author of several books intended to help popularize Hindi education. These include a book on Hindi grammar, a book to help prepare for Hindi Examination "Hindi Pariksha Sahayika" and most importantly a Mizo-Hindi Dictionary. The dictionary was published in 1965. [4]

Because of his fluency in Hindi language, he often served as an interpreter between Hindi speaking govt officials and local people. This role later expanded as the role of a peacemaker between the Indian Army and the Mizo National Front during the period of insurgency in Mizoram. He helped to secure bails for many Mizo prisoners negotiating with the authorities, paying bail money from his own pocket and by signing Bail Bonds. [5]

Pahlira Sena Chawngthu (1922–2005) was a Mizo poet, singer, and radio broadcaster from the Indian state of Mizoram.

Darchhawna is an Indian writer of Hindi literature and historian from the Northeast Indian state of Mizoram. Born on the New year Day of 1936, Darchhawna is a former Officer on Special Duty at the Mizoram University, when it was the Mizoram campus of the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) and the founder President of the Mizo History Association. He held the post of the president of the organization for several terms and is holding post, after getting elected in 2013. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2005, for his contributions to Indian literature.

Laltluangliana Khiangte Mizo academic, playwright and poet

Laltluangliana Khiangte is a Mizo academic, playwright and poet of Mizo literature. He was the principal of the Serampore College and a former professor at Pachhunga University College and the North Eastern Hill University. He is presently serving as the senior most professor at the Department of Mizo at Mizoram University. He is a recipient of the Pu Buanga Award, the highest literary award of the Mizo Academy of Letters. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2006, for his contributions to Indian literature.

Lalzuia Colney is an Indian academic and writer of Mizo literature.

A Zakia is a literati, a literary personality from the Siaha town of Mizoram, India, who was awarded the Padma Sri, the fourth highest civilian honour, by the Indian government in March 2018 for the preservation of the Mara language and cultural ethos through his exemplary contribution towards Mara journalism and literary creation.

Padma Shri Piyong Temjen Jamir was a noted Hindi scholar and littérateur from Longsa village under Mokokchung district in Nagaland state of India. He was conferred the Padma Sri honour by the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, in 2018 for the promotion of Hindi language and social work.

C. Kamlova is a litterateur from Mizoram state. He was awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honor, for his contribution to Hindi literature and education. Earlier, he received the 'Bhasha Bharti Award' from the Central Institute of Indian Languages in Mysore in 2003-04 for his Hindi-language book with the title ''Anubhav ki Diuphant''. Kamlova made significant contributions to the development of the Hindi language in Mizoram. He has organized a number of workshops to raise awareness of Hindi among the Mizos. In 2000, he contributed in the recognition of the "Hindi Praveen" program, which was initiated by the government.

T. Senka Ao is a journalist from the Indian state of Nagaland. Senka Ao is best known for his work as the Editor-in-Chief of the "Ao Milen", the first newspaper in Nagaland established in 1933 and the first newspaper ever to be published in the local Ao language. During the period of his edittorship, Senka Ao created the "Alokba" character famous for his witty commentary on social and current issues. Senka Ao has contributed several articles to various publications and has authored nine books in the Ao language. Two of his books Kongro Lijen and Kishi Tezulen are in the process of translation into English. Senka Ao's books have been included in the syllabus of the Ao language in ICSE and ISC Board New Delhi, and up to class 10 under Nagaland Board of School Education. He is an examiner of Arrangtet Examination which is the highest Ao language degree.

Harmohinder Singh Bedi is a Hindi author, an academician and an academic administrator from the Indian State of Punjab. Since 4 July 2018, he has been serving as the Chancellor of the Central University of Himachal Pradesh. He is also a Member of the Indian Council of Social Science Research and a Member of the National Monitoring Committee on Minority Education, Govt of India. Before joining Central University of Himachal Pradesh, Harmohinder Singh Bedi had served as Professor Emeritus, Punjabi University, Patiala and as Professor and Head of Department of Hindi, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. At Guru Nanak Dev University he had also served as Dean and Director of Chairs of Bhagat Kabir, Satguru Ram Singh and Swami Vivekanand.

Jagjit Singh Dardi is a journalist and an educationist from the Indian State of Punjab. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Punjabi language daily newspaper Chardikala, a newspaper that was started in 1977. In 1970 Dardi started a fortnightly Charhdikala Marg, whose Founder Editor was his father G Harnam Singh. This fortnightly paper was converted into a daily newspaper in 1977. He is the Chairman of the Punjabi news channel Chardilkala Time TV. He is also the Chairman of Sri Guru Harkrishan Group of Institutes which is a chain of institutes of higher education. He was awarded Padma Shri in the year 2022 for his services in national integration, communal harmony, contributions in the field of media, education and promotion of Punjabi language, culture and heritage.

Dhaneswar Engti is a poet-author from the Indian State of Assam promoting the use of the endangered Karbi language spoken by the Karbi people of Northeastern India. Engti has authored 19 books and written around 100 songs in the Karbi language. He has also served as the Joint Secretary of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council. In the year 2022, Govt. of India conferred on him the Padma Shri award for his work towards the preservation and advancement of indigenous languages.

Om Prakash Gandhi is a social worker from the Indian State of Haryana dedicated to the cause of girl child education.

Narasingha Prasad Guru is an author and a lyricist from the Indian State of Odisha. He is a pioneer and a promoter of the Koshali language, also known as the Sambalpuri language, which is a language spoken in the western parts of Odisha. He has composed over 10 books in this language and composed around 500 songs. He has also compiled a dictionary of the Koshali language.

Avadh Kishore Jadia is a poet and author in the Bundeli language and the Braj language from the Chhatarpur district in the Indian State of Madhya Pradesh. He was also an Ayurveda medical practitioner in the Madhya Pradesh Govt Service. In the year 2022, Govt of India honored him by conferring the Padma Shri award for his contributions as an author in the Bundeli and Braj languages.

Chirapat Prapandvidya is a Thai archaeologist, Sanskrit scholar and an Indologist. He was the founder and the first Director of Sanskrit Studies Centre at Silpakorn University in Bangkok. He has also published over a hundred articles on Sanskrit and Indology. In the year 2022, Govt of India honoured Chirapat Prapandvidya by conferring the Padma Shri award for his contributions to literature and education.
