Prahlad Chandra Tasa (born 1950) is an Indian writer and educationist, best known for his writings on education. [1] He is the vice president of the Asam Sahitya Sabha where he has also served as a general secretary. [2] He has published several books on educational and social issues, [3] including Asomor chah janagosthi, an anthology of articles on the lives of the tea workers of Assam. [4] The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2016, for his contributions to literature and education. [5]
Prahlad Chandra Tasa was born on 26 October 1950 at Gachemora in the northeast Indian state of Assam in a poor family to Lakhan Tasa–Mukti couple and did his early education at the local primary school. [6] After completing the schooling at Gachemora High School, he graduated from Dibrugarh Hanumanbux Surajmal Kanoi College and started his career as a school teacher at Bagmibar Nilmoni Phukan Higher Secondary School, then known as George Institution, on a temporary position, in 1973. While serving there, he founded Jamira Xahitya Xabha, a literary organization and served as its founder general secretary. When the tenure of the temporary post at the school expired, he joined Jamira Tea Estate Lower Primary School where he worked for five years and moved to Rameswar High School as a teacher till 1985. It was this time he was appointed as the school sub inspector of Tinsukia district. He served in the education department for 27 years and superannuated as the Block Elementary Education Officer of Barbarua in 2012. [3]
Tasa was elected as the president of Dibrugarh Xahitya Xabha in 1995 and became the district president in 2000. [3] In 2013, he was made the general secretary of the Asam Sahitya Sabha for a two-year term at the end of which he became the vice president of the organization, his term expiring in 2017. [2] He has published a number of books, on education as well as on the socio-cultural milieu of Assam. Asomor chah janagosthi, [7] a collection of articles edited by him is an account on the lives of the tea workers of the state. [8] His other publications include the poem anthology, Satabdi, a biography, Byaktitor Sandhanot and prose writings such as Siksha Samikhya, Siksha Anwesha, Chah Bagichat Gana Sakhyarota, Chah Bagichat Sikshar Prokhar, Chah Shramikor Sanskritir Ruprekha, Jhumoir Nritya Geet and Chah Shramikor Swasthya Chinta. The Government of India awarded him the civilian honor of the Padma Shri in 2016. [9] He is married to Hema Prabha Gogoi and the couple has two sons, Anadi Swami and Ananta Swami, both medical doctors. The family lives in Dibrugarh. [3]
The Asam Sahitya SabhaAssamese pronunciation:[/ɔxɔmxaɦittjɔxɔbʱa/]; lit. 'Literary Society of Assam') is a non Government, non profit, literary organisation of Assam. It was founded in December 1917 in Assam, India to promote the culture of Assam and Assamese literature. A branch of the organisation named Singapore Sahitya Sabha was launched in Singapore on 28 July 2019.
Atul Chandra Hazarika (1903–1986) was a prominent Assamese poet, dramatist, children's writer and translator. He was bestowed the epithet "Sahitycharjya" by Asam Sahitya Sabha, the premier literary organization of Assam.
Nakul Chandra Bhuyan (1895–1968) was an Indian historian, playwright, essayist and a short story writer of Assamese language.
Arun Sarma was a writer of Assam. Arun Sarma was one of Assam's contemporary playwrights and is particularly known for his unconventional plays with some elements of drama. Besides drama, he also authored over six novels detailing the Assamese way of life. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2010 in recognition of his contributions to Assamese literature. He has also been awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1998 for the novel Ashirbadar Rong. He has won the Asam Sahitya Sabha's Best Playwright Award for two consecutive years and also has the rare distinction of having won the Sangeet Natak Akademi award in 2003 for his contributions to drama and the Sahitya Akademi award in 1998 for literature. He was also the recipient of the Assam Valley Literary Award in 2005.
Mahim Bora was an Indian writer and educationist from Assam. He was elected as a president of the Assam Sahitya Sabha held in 1989 at Doomdooma. He was awarded most notably the Padma Shri in 2011, the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2001 and the Assam Valley Literary Award in 1998. Assam Sahitya Sabha conferred its highest honorary title Sahityacharyya on him in 2007.He also participated in the Quit India Movement of 1942 held in Kaliabor town in the Nagaon district of Assam.
Nalini Bala Devi was an Indian writer and poet of Assamese literature, known for nationalistic as well as mystical poetry. She was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1957 for her contribution to literature, and 1968 she won the Sahitya Akademi Award given by Sahitya Akademi for her poetry collection Alakananda. She is the first woman Assamese poet to be awarded with Padma Shri and the first lady to the chair the Assam Sahitya Sabha.
Imran Shah, also known as Nawab Imran Shah is an Indian Assamese language writer, poet, novelist, and scholar. He also writes under the pen names Ishan Dutta, Anamika Baruah, Kumbhakarna, and Animesh Baruah. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2021, for his contributions to literature and education.
Birendranath Datta was an Indian academician, linguist, author, researcher of folklore, singer, and lyricist. During his career, he worked mainly as a professor in a variety of Assam colleges. In 2009, he was awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for Literature and Education, and in 2010 he received the Jagaddhatri-Harmohan Das Literary award. Datta was elected as the president of Asom Sahitya Sabha for the 2003 North Lakhimpur Session, and the 2004 Hojai Session.
Mafizuddin Ahmed Hazarika (1870-1958) was an Indian poet belonging to the Jonaki era of Assamese Literature. He was popularly known as 'Gyan Malinir Kobi' among the people of Assam. He was elected as the president of the 12th Asam Sahitya Sabha in 1930 held at Golaghat district, Assam. He was one of the organizers of Dibrugarh Sahitya Sabha and served as its secretary from 1904 to 1934. He also presided over the "Chatra Sanmilan" held at Sibsagar in 1930.
Ananda Chandra Agarwala (1874–1940) was a writer, poet, historian, translator and administrative officer from Sonitpur district of Assam. He is known as Bhangoni Kunwor for his translation of several English poems into Assamese. He was elected as a president of the Asam Sahitya Sabha in 1934 held at Mangaldoi. He was honoured with the title of Raibahadur by the ruling British Government. Ananda Chandra Agarwala was the brother of noted Assamese poet Chandra Kumar Agarwala and uncle of Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, a poet, playwright, composer, lyricist, writer and first Assamese Filmmaker.
Ananda Chandra Barua (1907–1983) was a writer, poet, playwright, translator, journalist and actor from Assam. He is popularly known as Bokulbonor Kobi in Assamese literacy society. He was honoured with, most notably the Padma Shri title and Sahitya Akademi award.
Nagen Saikia is an Indian writer. He was formerly a professor of Dibrugarh University. Saikia had also been a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1986-1992 and was the vice-chairman of the Upper House from 1990-1992. Saikia started his career as a teacher and went on to serve in different reputed institutions in various categories. He also delivered lectures on various topics about Assamese literature, including in the US and England. He has published numerous literary essays, short stories, novels, books and articles, to his credit. Saikia was conferred with the Sahitya Akademi award in 1997 for his short stories collection Andharat Nizar Mukh and was honoured by the Mohan Chandra Sahitya Sabha in 1980 for Chinta aru Charcha. He was conferred the Fellow of Sahitya Akademi, the highest honour conferred by the prestigious Literary body of the Nation, the Sahitya Akademi on the most distinguished Indian writers.
Professor Maheswar Neog was an Indian academic who specialised in the cultural history of the North East India especially Assam, besides being an Assamese-language scholar and poet. He was a top Indologist, and his work covers all disciplines of Indian studies, folk-lore, language, dance, history, music, religion, drama, fine arts, paintings, historiography and hagiography, lexicography and orthography, epigraphy and ethnography. His research includes multi-dimensional features of Vaishnava renaissance in Assam through Srimanta Sankardev, Madhabdev, Damodardev, Haridev, Bhattadev and other Vaishnava saints of Assam.
Rongbong Terang is a literary figure from Assam, India. He is a Padmashree Awardee for his literary work Rongmilir Hanhi (1981).
Kamakhya Prasad Tasa is an Indian politician. He is currently Member of parliament in Rajya Sabha representing Assam since 14 June 2019 and the National Secretary of Bharatiya Janata Party since 2023. He was also a Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha from Jorhat being a Bharatiya Janata Party candidate from 2014 to 2019 and the State Vice President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Assam from 2013 to 2017. Kamakhya Prasad Tasa is seen as a formidable leader with a strong and substantial following base. He is credited with BJP's growing influence in various caste groups who have settled in Assam over the state, having arrived in the quest of jobs in the state's tea gardens to mention specifically. His role as a party leader is pivotal for the success of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the whole North-Eastern Part of India along with the convener of North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma who is the current Chief Minister of Assam.
Chandra Prasad Saikia (1927–2006) was a writer from Assam, India. He was the president of the Asam Sahitya Sabha held at Hajo and Jorhat district, Assam in 1999 and 2000, respectively. Saikia was born on 8 July 1927 in Jalukgaon, Jhanji in Sivasagar district, Assam. After having primary education in Sivasagar he had left for Kolkata for higher education.
Ajoy Kumar Dutta is an Indian social worker from the northeast Indian state of Assam. He is a Guwahati-based activist who is associated with several non governmental organizations working in the state. A former municipal councillor at the Guwahati Municipal Corporation, he successfully contested the Assam Assembly Elections of 1978 as a Janata Party candidate defeating Nandeshwar Talukdar of the Communist Party of India by polling close to 34 percent of the total votes polled, and represented the Guwahati East constituency in the Assembly. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2016, for his contributions to society.
Prafulla Govinda Baruah is the owner and managing director of The Assam Tribune. In 2018, he was presented with the Padma Shri for his contribution to the growth of literature and education in Assam, India.
Surjya Kanta Hazarika is an Assamese litterateur, an eminent scholar, author, publisher, playwright, lyricist, composer, cultural activist, feature film and documentary maker, social worker and philanthropist. Hazarika is a recipient of the Padma Shri Award in 2008 for his contribution to Literature & Education. He is the current president of Asam Sahitya Sabha.
Dulal Manki is an Indian Assamese folk artist and musician. He is one of the traditional folk music artists from Tea-garden community of Assam. In 2021, the Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri for his contribution on music.
