Saliha Abid Hussain (1913 - 1988) was an Indian writer of Urdu literature, [1] considered by many to be one of the prominent writers of modern Urdu novels and children's literature. [2] [3] She is the author of works such as Azra, [4] Rekhta, [5] Yadgaray hali [6] Baat Cheet [7] and Jane Walon ki Yad Ati Hai. [8] The Government of India awarded her the fourth highest Indian civilian honour of Padma Shri in 1983. [9] Her life has been documented in a biography, Saliha Abid Hussain, written by Sughra Mehdi and published in 1993. [10]


Her writing covered many subjects, including women's rights, and according to her niece Dr Sayeda Hameed, who curated the exhibition Pathbreakers: The 20th Century Muslim Women of India at the Bangalore International Centre in 2020, "She spoke out against Triple Talaq and other subjects fearlessly." [11]

Syed Hussain Jaun Asghar Naqvi, commonly known as Jaun Elia, was an Indo-Pak Urdu poet, philosopher, biographer, and scholar. He was the brother of Rais Amrohvi and Syed Muhammad Taqi, who were journalists and psychoanalysts. He was fluent in Urdu, Arabic, English, Persian, Sanskrit and Hebrew. One of the most prominent modern Urdu poets, popular for his unconventional ways, he "acquired knowledge of philosophy, logic, Islamic history, the Muslim Sufi tradition, Muslim religious sciences, Western literature, and Kabbala."

Sharad Joshi was an Indian poet, writer, satirist and a dialogue and scriptwriter in Hindi films and television. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1990.

Josh Malihabadi

Josh Malihabadi popularly known as Shayar-e-Inqalab is regarded as one of the finest Urdu poets of the era of British India. Known for his liberal values and challenging the established order, he wrote over 100,000 couplets and more than 1,000 rubaiyat in his lifetime. His wrote Yaadon ki Barat, his autobiography which is noted for its frank and candid style. The first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru held him in high esteem and frequently attended the mushaira at Lala Kishan Lal Kalra's United Coffee House where Josh performed.

Nida Fazli

Muqtida Hasan Nida Fazli, known as Nida Fazli, was a prominent Indian Hindi and Urdu poet, lyricist and dialogue writer. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2013 by the government of India for his contribution to literature.

Shamsur Rahman Faruqi

Shamsur Rahman Faruqi was an Indian Urdu language poet, author, critic and theorist. He is known for ushering modernism to Urdu literature. He formulated fresh models of literary appreciation that combined western principles of literary criticism and subsequently applied them to Urdu literature after adapting them to address literary aesthetics native to Arabic, Persian, and Urdu. Some of his notable works included Sher-e-Shor Angrez (1996), Ka’i Chand The Sar-e Asman (2006), The Mirror of Beauty (2013), and The Sun that Rose from the Earth (2014). He was also the editor and publisher of the Urdu literary magazine Shabkhoon.

K. P. Saxena was an Indian satirist and writer. He was employed by the Indian Railways and was a prolific writer for magazines and newspapers. He started writing for Doordarshan's famous serial Bibi Natiyon Wali. He wrote vyangya articles for almost every popular magazine of Hindi. His first book of satire Koi Patthar Se Na Mare was published in 1982. His style is unique and he is very popular among poets in Kavi Sammelans. He was an expert of three Indian language Urdu, Hindi and Awadhi. He was awarded Padma Shri by Government of India, in year 2000. He died on 31 October 2013. He was a regular in Hindi Kavi Sammelan.

Salik Lucknawi was the nom de plume of Shaukat Riaz Kapoor, an Indian Urdu poet and journalist. He was a recipient of the civilian honour of the Padma Shri.

Jeelani Bano is an Indian writer of Urdu literature. She was honored by the Government of India, in 2001, with the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri.

Gyan Chand Jain was an Indian writer and scholar of Urdu literature. Born in 1923 at Seohara of Bijnore district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, Jain was known for his scholarship on Ghalib literature. He authored several books including Aik Bhasha: Do Likhawat, Do Adab and Urdu Ki Nasri Dastanain, the latter considered by many as his masterpiece.

Gulam Rabbani was an Indian lawyer and poet of Urdu literature who wrote under the nom de plume 'Taban'. He wrote several poems in Urdu, especially ghazals, and was known for his works, Zauq-i safar, Nava-e-avara, Poetics to politics and Saz-i larzan. He received the Sahitya Akademi award in 1979 for his work, Nava-e-avara. He was honoured by the Government of India in 1971 with Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award.

Kalim Aajiz was an Indian writer of Urdu literature and a famous poet. An academic educator and chairman of the Urdu Advisory Committee of the Government of Bihar. He was a recipient of the fourth highest Indian civilian honour of Padma Shri from the Government of India in 1989.

Ale Ahmad Suroor was an Urdu poet, critic and professor from India. He is best known for his literary criticism. In 1974 he was honoured with the Sahitya Akademi Award by the Government of India for his literary critic work, Nazar aur Nazariya. In 1991 he was also awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian award. He was awarded a special gold medal by the President of Pakistan on the centenary of the birth of Muhammad Iqbal.

Leeladhar Jagudi is an Indian teacher, journalist and poet of Hindi literature. He is the author of several poetry anthologies including Natak Jari Hai and Shankha Mukhi Shikharon Par and is a recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award, for his 1997 anthology, Anubhav Ke Aakash Mein Chand. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2004, for his contributions to Hindi literature.

Shamim Hanafi Indian Urdu writer

Shamim Hanafi was an Indian Urdu critic, dramatist and a proponent of modernist movement in Urdu literature. His books on modernism include The Philosophical Foundation of Modernism and New Poetic Tradition. He was associated with the Jamia Millia Islamia to the extent of becoming a professor emeritus.

Urdu Ghazal

The Urdu Ghazal is a literary form of the ghazal unique to South Asia. It is commonly asserted that the ghazal spread to South Asia from the influence of Sufi mystics and the Delhi Sultanate.
