North Louisiana (French : Louisiane du Nord), also known locally as Sportsman's Paradise, [1] [2] (a name sometimes attributed to the state as a whole) is a region in the U.S. state of Louisiana. The region has two metropolitan areas: Shreveport-Bossier City and Monroe-West Monroe, two micropolitian areas: Ruston Micropolitan Area and Minden Micropolitan Statistical Area, and two combined statistical areas: Shreveport–Bossier City–Minden CSA and Monroe–Ruston Combined Statistical Area. The Shreveport area has the largest metropolitan and CSA by population in North Louisiana.

Geography

The northwestern portion of Louisiana is culturally and economically attached to Northeast Texas and Southwest Arkansas. Combined they comprise the Ark-La-Tex area, just as the northeastern portion of Louisiana, Southeast Arkansas, and Northwest Mississippi are known as the Ark-La-Miss. The Louisiana Central Hill Country, the hilly areas of LaSalle, Grant, Winn, Caldwell, Natchitoches, Jackson, Lincoln, and Bienville parishes, [3] extend into portions of North Louisiana's border with Central Louisiana.

There are two combined statistical areas, two metropolitan statistical areas, and two micropolitan statistical areas that include North Louisiana parishes.

Minden is a small city and the parish seat of Webster Parish, Louisiana, United States. It is located twenty-eight miles east of Shreveport. As of the 2020 census, the city had a total population of 11,928. The Main Street district of Minden is recognized as a Louisiana Main Street Community, a Louisiana Cultural Products District, and is sited on the National Register of Historic Places. Minden is the core and principal city of the Minden Micropolitan Statistical Area, consisting of all of Webster Parish, which is included in the Shreveport–Bossier City–Minden CSA.

Shreveport is a city in the U.S. state of Louisiana. It is the third-most populous city in Louisiana after New Orleans and Baton Rouge. The bulk of Shreveport is in Caddo Parish, of which it is the parish seat. It extends along the west bank of the Red River into neighboring Bossier Parish. The 2020 census tabulation for the city's population was 187,593, while the Shreveport–Bossier City metropolitan area had a population of 393,406.

The Ark-La-Tex is a socio-economic tri-state region where the Southern U.S. states of Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas join together. The region contains portions of Northwest Louisiana, Northeast Texas, and South Arkansas as well as the extreme southeastern tip of Oklahoma, in McCurtain County, partly centered upon the Red River, which flows along the Texas–Oklahoma state line into Southwestern Arkansas and Northwest Louisiana.

At the 2020 United States census, the metropolitan region had a population of 393,406; its American Community Survey population was 397,590 per census estimates. With a 2010 census population of 439,000, it declined to become Louisiana's fourth largest metropolis at 394,706 residents at the 2019 census estimates.

The Monroe–Ruston Combined Statistical Area is made up of five parishes in northern Louisiana. The statistical area consists of the Monroe Metropolitan Statistical Area and the Ruston Micropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the CSA had a population of 251,155.

Interstate 20 (I-20) is a part of the Interstate Highway System that spans 1,539.38 miles (2,477.39 km) from Reeves County, Texas, to Florence, South Carolina. Within the state of Louisiana, the highway travels 189.84 miles (305.52 km) from the Texas state line west of Greenwood to the Mississippi River, which it crosses into Vicksburg, Mississippi.

The Shreveport–Bossier City–Minden combined statistical area is made up of four parishes in northwestern Louisiana. The statistical area consists of the Shreveport–Bossier City metropolitan statistical area and the Minden micropolitan statistical area. As of the 2010 census, the CSA had a population of 439,000. In 2013, OMB changed statistical definitions, subsuming Minden into the Shreveport metro ; in 2018, these changes were reversed.

U.S. Highway 63 (US 63) is a part of the United States Numbered Highway System that spans 1,286 miles (2,070 km) from Ruston, Louisiana to a point southwest of Ashland, Wisconsin. Within the state of Louisiana, the highway travels 35.40 miles (56.97 km) from the national southern terminus at the junction of Interstate 20 (I-20), US 167, and Louisiana Highway 146 (LA 146) in Ruston to the Arkansas state line at Junction City.

William Franklin Spooner, known as Frank Spooner, is an oil and natural gas producer in Monroe in Ouachita Parish in northeastern Louisiana, who has been active since the early 1970s in his state's Republican Party. In the fall of 1976, Spooner waged a strong but losing race for the United States House of Representatives for Louisiana's 5th congressional district in a bid to succeed incumbent Otto Passman, who had been unseated in the Democratic primary by farmer/businessman Jerry Huckaby, then from Ringgold in Bienville Parish. Therefore, instead of facing Passman, as he had expected, Spooner competed with Huckaby for a relatively rare open seat in the state's congressional delegation.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">28th Louisiana Infantry Regiment</span> Infantry regiment of the Confederate States Army

The 28th Louisiana Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment from Louisiana that served in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. It was also known as Gray's Regiment to differentiate it from the 28th (Thomas') Louisiana Infantry Regiment, which was also numbered as 29th. Raised in 1862 it served in the Trans-Mississippi Theater and along the Gulf Coast until it disbanded in 1865.

The Arkansas Southern Railroad Company was a small carrier with track in Arkansas and Louisiana. It was incorporated in 1892 and merged out of existence in 1905.
