Patient Number 9 is the thirteenth studio album by English heavy metal singer Ozzy Osbourne. It was released on 9 September 2022 through Epic Records and was produced by Andrew Watt. [3]
Patient Number 9 received favourable reviews from music critics and won Best Rock Album at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards. [4] It was ranked as the 9th best guitar album of 2022 by Guitar World readers. [5]
Four days after the release of Ordinary Man , Osbourne announced that he had started working on its follow-up, with Andrew Watt returning as producer. [1] [6] On 24 June 2022, the lead single and title track, "Patient Number 9" featuring Jeff Beck, was released along with an accompanying music video. The music video was directed by Todd McFarlane and M. Wartella. [7] [8] The clip is the first-ever video to incorporate Osbourne's hand-drawn artwork. "My demons were animated and can be seen during the Jeff Beck guitar solo in the song," wrote Osbourne on Twitter. [9] The track subsequently debuted at No. 1 on Billboard 's Hot Hard Rock Songs chart, while concurrently achieving debuts of Nos. 17 and 22 on Billboard's Hot Rock Songs and Hot Rock & Alternative Songs, respectively. [10] At the same time, Osbourne announced the album, cover, track listing and release date. [11] [12]
The second single "Degradation Rules", featuring Osbourne's former Black Sabbath bandmate Tony Iommi, was unveiled on 22 July. [13] [14] Four days before the album release, on 5 September, the third single "Nothing Feels Right" featuring Zakk Wylde was published. [15] [16] Osbourne performed during the halftime show at the Los Angeles Rams' NFL season opener against the Buffalo Bills on 8 September in support of the album. [17]

Patient Number 9 received generally positive reviews from contemporary music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalised rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream publications, the album received an average score of 75, based on 10 reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews". [18]
AllMusic critic Fred Thomas gave the album a mostly positive review. He wrote: "Even with that fatalistic perspective sometimes peeking through, Ozzy sounds hypercharged throughout Patient Number 9, continuing the unlikely late-in-the-game comeback he began on Ordinary Man , and besting that album by taking more chances." [19]
Furthermore, writing for The Guardian , Alexis Petridis gave the album an overall positive review, implying that "By way of contrast, Patient Number 9 draws to a close with God Only Knows, a beautiful stadium rock ballad that features Osbourne contemplating his own mortality in terms that are alternately starkly affecting." [20]
Kerrang! gave the album 4 out of 5 and stated: "If nothing else, it's pleasing to see Ozzy still carrying on and still being the Prince of Darkness. But Patient Number 9 is also, like its predecessor, a massive celebration of life and friendship and the magic power of music. 'I'll never die, because I'm immortal!' he announces on Immortal. He sounds it." [22]
Metal Hammer gave the album a positive review and stated: "Despite everything you may have heard about Ozzy being on his last legs, Patient Number 9 unequivocally does not sound like the work of a man living on borrowed time. Instead, it sounds like the Prince of fucking Darkness having an absolutely smashing time, with a bunch of his mates and, weirdly, a newfound sense of artistic ambition." [23]
NME writer Rhian Daly gave Patient Number 9 almost perfect score and stated: "At 73 years old and battling with his health, you might not expect Osbourne to keep that bar particularly high. But, for the most part, Patient Number 9 does just that – it's a fizzing piece of hard-rock magic. The superstitious metal frontman might have revealed in a recent Independent interview that he tries to "avoid looking at" the number 13, but we're lucky to have his magnificent 13th solo album." [24]
Gareth Williams of Wall of Sound gave the album a positive review, saying that "There's no disguising one of rock's more unique voices and the singer sounds as good as he has in years. Although this album doesn't break any new ground it is streaks ahead of the likes of 2007's Black Rain or Scream from 2010. With Ordinary Man having blasted up the mainstream charts in 2020, Patient Number 9 won't be far behind." [25]
At the 65th Annual Grammy Awards, Patient Number 9 received a total of four nominations, including Best Rock Album. The title track "Patient Number 9" received nominations for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance, and "Degradation Rules" was nominated for Best Metal Performance. The album would go on to win two Grammys, including Best Rock Album and Best Metal Performance for "Degradation Rules". [26] This win makes it the third Grammy Award that Ozzy Osbourne and Tony Iommi won together, after previously winning two as members of Black Sabbath. [27]

John Michael "Ozzy" Osbourne is an English musician and media personality. He rose to prominence during the 1970s as the lead singer of the heavy metal band Black Sabbath, during which period he adopted the nickname "Prince of Darkness".
No Rest for the Wicked is the fifth solo studio album by English heavy metal singer Ozzy Osbourne. It was released in October 1988, and was re-issued on 22 August 1995, and again on 25 June 2002. The album was certified gold in December 1988 and has since gone double platinum. It peaked at number 13 on the Billboard 200. It was the first album to feature guitarist Zakk Wylde, keyboardist John Sinclair and the first to feature bassist Bob Daisley since Bark at the Moon.
No More Tears is the sixth studio album by English heavy metal singer Ozzy Osbourne. Released on 17 September 1991, the album charted at number 17 on the UK Albums Chart and number seven on the US Billboard 200 albums chart. No More Tears spawned four singles which reached the top ten of the US Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, including the number two "Mama, I'm Coming Home", and the Grammy-winning track "I Don't Want to Change the World". Along with 1980's Blizzard of Ozz it is one of Osbourne's two best-selling solo albums in North America, having been certified quadruple platinum by the RIAA and double platinum by CRIA. It was Osbourne's final album to feature drummer Randy Castillo and longtime bassist and songwriter Bob Daisley.
Paranoid is the second studio album by English heavy metal band Black Sabbath, released on 18 September 1970, by Vertigo Records in the United Kingdom and on 7 January 1971, by Warner Bros. Records in the United States. The album contains several of the band's signature songs, including "Iron Man", "War Pigs" and the title track, which was the band's only Top 20 hit, reaching number 4 on the UK charts.
Master of Reality is the third studio album by English heavy metal band Black Sabbath, released in the United Kingdom on 6 August 1971 by Vertigo Records. It is regarded by some critics as the foundation of doom metal, stoner rock, and sludge metal. Produced by Rodger Bain, who also produced the band's prior two albums, Master of Reality was recorded at Island Studios in London from February to April 1971. Guitarist Tony Iommi and bassist Geezer Butler downtuned their instruments during the production, achieving what Iommi called a "bigger, heavier sound".
Live & Loud is a live album recorded by the former Black Sabbath singer Ozzy Osbourne, released on 28 June 1993. At the time, it was to be Osbourne's final album following Osbourne's final tour before retiring, aptly titled "No More Tours". The track "Black Sabbath" featured the original line-up of Black Sabbath, the members of which were invited to join Ozzy as guest stars for the Costa Mesa Reunion shows.
Ozzmosis is the seventh studio album by English heavy metal singer Ozzy Osbourne. Recorded in Paris and New York with producer Michael Beinhorn, it was released on 23 October 1995 by Epic Records. The album reached number 22 on the UK Albums Chart and number four on the US Billboard 200. "Perry Mason", "See You on the Other Side" and "I Just Want You" were released as singles.
Down to Earth is the eighth studio album by English heavy metal singer Ozzy Osbourne. Released on 16 October 2001, it reached number 19 on the UK Albums Chart and number four on the US Billboard 200. "The Ozzfest was doing well", Osbourne explained. "I just wanted to be like the Grateful Dead and keep it going by touring, but the record company said they'd like a new Ozzy album."
Reunion is a live album by English heavy metal band Black Sabbath, released on 19 October 1998. As implied by the title, the album features a reunion of the original Black Sabbath lineup of vocalist Ozzy Osbourne, guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler and drummer Bill Ward. The album represents the first new release featuring that version of the group since 1978's Never Say Die! and Osbourne's subsequent firing the following year. Black Sabbath received their first ever Grammy Award in 2000 for the live recording of "Iron Man" taken from Reunion.
"Dreamer" is a ballad and the third track from Ozzy Osbourne's album Down to Earth, which was released on October 16, 2001. The single peaked at number 10 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Tracks. The song describes the rockstar's vision of people and humanity destroying Earth. In the liner notes to Osbourne's Prince of Darkness box set, Ozzy refers to this song as his version of John Lennon's "Imagine". The Japanese and European press of the single also include a slightly different version of the song, dubbed "Dreamer (acoustic)", and a previously unreleased song titled "Black Skies".
Under Cover is the ninth studio album by English heavy metal singer Ozzy Osbourne. The album consists entirely of cover songs, with an emphasis on rock music from the 1960s and 1970s. This is Osbourne's first and only album to feature cover songs from various artists, although in 1982, Osbourne released the live album Speak of the Devil featuring renditions of songs from his time with Black Sabbath. All but four songs were originally released in the box set Prince of Darkness, released earlier the same year. The additional songs are "Rocky Mountain Way", "Sunshine of Your Love", "Woman" and "Go Now". Whilst he cites The Beatles as his favourite band, his favourite song of all time is Procol Harum's "A Whiter Shade of Pale". He had wished to cover this song but was advised against it since it had recently been covered by a "close musical associate".
"No More Tears" is the fifth song and title track on the 1991 Ozzy Osbourne album No More Tears. It reached number five on the U.S. Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, number 71 on the Billboard Hot 100, number 17 on the Dutch Top 40 chart and number 32 on the UK Singles Chart.
"Gets Me Through" is a song by English heavy metal singer Ozzy Osbourne from his 2001 album Down to Earth. It is both the opening track and lead single from the album. The song opens with the lyrics "I'm not the kind of person you think I am/I'm not the Antichrist or the Iron Man", explaining that Osbourne's stage persona is not his actual personality. The song's lyrics also feature Osbourne telling his fans that their appreciation "gets (him) through", hence the title.

It is Osbourne's last album to date to feature drummer Mike Bordin, and the first to feature bassist Rob Nicholson. It is also the first album since 2001's Down to Earth to feature guitar player Zakk Wylde. However, he left again after the album's release, but reappeared again on Osbourne's 2022 album Patient Number 9. Black Rain debuted at No. 3 on the US Billboard 200, selling about 152,000 copies in its first week; making it Osbourne's highest debut to date. The album has been certified Gold in US.
Scream is the eleventh studio album by English heavy metal singer Ozzy Osbourne, released in the United Kingdom on 14 June 2010. The album was recorded at Osbourne's home studio "The Bunker" in Los Angeles, California and produced by himself and Kevin Churko, who had previously worked on Black Rain in 2007. The album was considered commercially disappointing in comparison to Osbourne's earlier work, though it was a moderate success by reaching 4 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart and number 12 on the UK Albums Chart.
13 is the nineteenth and final studio album by English rock band Black Sabbath. It was released on 10 June 2013 through Vertigo Records, acting as their first studio album in 18 years following Forbidden (1995). It was the band's first studio recording with original singer Ozzy Osbourne and bassist Geezer Butler since the live album Reunion (1998), which contained two new studio tracks. It was also the first studio album with Osbourne since Never Say Die! (1978), and with Butler since Cross Purposes (1994).

The second single, "Straight to Hell", was released on 22 November 2019. The third single and title track featuring singer Elton John was released on 10 January 2020.
