The Pennsylvania State Game Lands Number 28 are Pennsylvania State Game Lands in Elk, Forest and Jefferson Counties in Pennsylvania in the United States providing hunting, bird watching, and other activities.^[1]

The Pennsylvania State Game Lands (SGL) are lands managed by the Pennsylvania Game Commission for hunting, trapping, and fishing. These lands, often not usable for farming or development, are donated to the PGC or purchased by the PGC with hunting license monies.

Elk County is a county located in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. As of the 2010 census, the population was 31,946. Its county seat is Ridgway. The county was created on April 18, 1843, from parts of Jefferson, Clearfield and McKean Counties, and is named for the Eastern elk that historically inhabited the region.

Forest County is a county located in Western Pennsylvania. As of the 2010 census, the population was 7,716, making it the third-least populous county in Pennsylvania. Its county seat is Tionesta. The county was created in 1848 and later organized in 1857.

Geography

State Game Lands Number 28 is located in Highland, Millstone and Spring Creek Townships in Elk County, and in Jenks Township in Forest County.^[2]

Millstone Township is a township in Elk County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 82 at the 2010 census.

Spring Creek Township is a township in Elk County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 233 at the 2010 census.

Nearby communities include Beuhler Corner, Corduroy, Four Corners, Hallton, Lake City, Owls Nest, Sackett and Threemile in Elk County, and Lamonaville and Parrish in Forest County.^[2]

Highways in the vicinity of SGL 28 include U.S. Route 219, Pennsylvania Route 66, Pennsylvania Route 948 and Pennsylvania Route 949.^[2]

U.S. Route 219 is a spur of U.S. Route 19. It runs for 535 miles (861 km) from West Seneca, New York at an interchange with Interstate 90, to Rich Creek, Virginia, intersecting at U.S. Route 460. U.S. 219 is found in New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, and Virginia. Much of the Route in West Virginia follows the old Indian warpath known as the Seneca Trail.

Pennsylvania Route 66 (PA 66) is a 139.7-mile-long (224.8 km) state highway in Western Pennsylvania. Its southern terminus is at U.S. Route 119 near New Stanton. Its northern terminus is at U.S. Route 6 in Kane. The southernmost 13.7 miles (22.0 km) of the route is a toll road named the Amos K. Hutchinson Bypass and is signed as PA Turnpike 66, a part of the Pennsylvania Turnpike System serving as a bypass of Greensburg. The Bypass runs between US 119 and US 22.

Pennsylvania Route 948 is a 38.5-mile-long (62.0 km) state highway located in Elk, Forest, and Warren counties in Pennsylvania. The southern terminus is at PA 255 in Fox Township. The northern terminus is at PA 666 in Sheffield Township.

Hydrography

The Clarion River is a portion of the southern border of SGL 28. Tributaries draining SGL 28 include Belvidere Run, Big Run, Hill Run, Lappin Run, Little Crow Run, Little Run, McCellan Run, Pearsall Run, Pigeon Run, Red Lick Run and Spring Creek. Clarion River and its tributaries are all part of the Allegheny River watershed.^[2]

The Clarion River is a tributary of the Allegheny River, approximately 110 mi (177 km) long, in west central Pennsylvania in the United States. It drains a rugged area of the Allegheny Plateau in the Ohio River watershed, flowing through narrow serpentine valleys and hardwood forests.

A tributary or affluent is a stream or river that flows into a larger stream or main stem river or a lake. A tributary does not flow directly into a sea or ocean. Tributaries and the main stem river drain the surrounding drainage basin of its surface water and groundwater, leading the water out into an ocean.

The Allegheny River is a 325-mile (523 km) long headwater stream of the Ohio River in western Pennsylvania and New York, United States. The Allegheny River runs from its headwaters just below the middle of Pennsylvania's northern border northwesterly into New York then in a zigzag southwesterly across the border and through Western Pennsylvania to join the Monongahela River at the Forks of the Ohio on the "Point" of Point State Park in Downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Allegheny River is, by volume, the main headstream of both the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. Historically, the Allegheny was considered to be the upper Ohio River by both Native Americans and European settlers.

Protected areas

The Game Lands is almost surrounded by the Allegheny National Forest to the west, north, and east. Other protected areas within 30 miles (48 km) include Bendigo State Park, Chapman State Park, Cook Forest State Park, Elk State Park, Kinzua Bridge State Park, and Parker Dam State Park, and State Game Lands Pennsylvania State Game Lands Numbers 14, 24, 25, 29, 31, 34, 44, 54, 62, 72, 74, 77, 86, 244, 266, 283, 293, 331.^[2]

The Allegheny National Forest is a National Forest in northwestern Pennsylvania. The forest covers 513,175 acres of land. Within the forest is Kinzua Dam, which impounds the Allegheny River to form Allegheny Reservoir. The administrative headquarters for the Allegheny National Forest is in Warren. The Allegheny National Forest has two ranger stations, one in Marienville, Forest County, and the other in Bradford, McKean County.

Bendigo State Park is a 100.26-acre (40.57 ha) Pennsylvania state park in Jones Township, Elk County, Pennsylvania in the United States. The park is in a valley on the East Branch Clarion River. 20 acres (8.1 ha) of the park are developed. The other 80 acres (32 ha) are undeveloped woodlands of beech, birch, cherry and maple.

Chapman State Park is a 805-acre (326 ha) Pennsylvania state park in Pleasant Township, Warren County, Pennsylvania near Clarendon, in the United States. The man-made Chapman Lake covers 68 acres (28 ha) of the park. Chapman State Park is named in honor of Dr. Leroy E. Chapman. Dr. Chapman was a state senator from 1929 until 1963. He was part of several civic groups that pushed for the creation of a state park in Warren County. Chapman State Park, opened in 1951, is adjacent to Allegheny National Forest and State Game Land 29 just off U.S. Route 6.

SGL 28 was entered into the Geographic Names Information System on 2 August 1979 as identification number 1199600. Elevations range from 1,260 feet (380 m) to 1,847 feet (563 m) and consists of 11,257.42 acres (4,555.72 ha) in a single parcel located at 41°26′46″N78°56′12″W / 41.44611°N 78.93667°W / 41.44611; -78.93667 .^[3]

Biology

Hunting and trapping species in SGL include bear (Ursus americanus), beaver (Castor canadensis), deer (Odocoileus virginianus), Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), goose (Branta canadensis) and turkey (Meleagris vison). Forest species include American beech (Fagus grandifolia), Black birch (Betula nigra), Black cherry (Prunus serotina), Eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis), Red maple (Acer rubrum), Sugar maple (Acer saccharum), Chestnut oak (Quercus montana), Northern red oak, (Quercus rubra), White oak (Quercus alba) and Eastern white pine (Pinus strobus).^[1]
