Ramco Point Conservation Park is a protected area located in the Australian state of South Australia in the locality of Sunlands about 150 kilometres (93 mi) north-east of the state capital of Adelaide and about 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) north-west of the municipal seat of Waikerie. [1]
Protected areas or conservation areas are locations which receive protection because of their recognized natural, ecological or cultural values. There are several kinds of protected areas, which vary by level of protection depending on the enabling laws of each country or the regulations of the international organizations involved.
South Australia is a state in the southern central part of Australia. It covers some of the most arid parts of the country. With a total land area of 983,482 square kilometres (379,725 sq mi), it is the fourth-largest of Australia's states and territories by area, and fifth largest by population. It has a total of 1.7 million people, and its population is the second most highly centralised in Australia, after Western Australia, with more than 77 percent of South Australians living in the capital, Adelaide, or its environs. Other population centres in the state are relatively small; Mount Gambier, the second largest centre, has a population of 28,684.
Sunlands is a locality on the left bank of the Murray River, 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) west of Waikerie, South Australia. The Waikerie Golf and Country Club course is in Sunlands.
The conservation park consists of crown land described as “Allotment 4 of DP 66666” in the cadastral unit of the Hundred of Waikerie. It came into existence on 22 June 2006 by proclamation under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972 . It is located at the east end of Sunlands between Ramco Road in the west and the bank of the River Murray in the east. As of 2016, it covered an area of 30 hectares (74 acres). [1] [3] [4]
The name which was approved on 20 October 2005 is derived from a geographical feature called Ramco Point which is located close to the conservation park. One of the other suggested names was the Emil Lochart Conservation Park which was proposed by the District Council of Loxton Waikerie. [1] The name Ramco is of aboriginal origin and is reported in the papers of Norman Tindale, the anthropologist, as being derived from bokarampko, the Aboriginal name for Ramco Lagoon which is located immediately south of the conservation park in the locality of Ramco. The District Council of Loxton Waikerie is a local government area in the Murray Mallee region of South Australia. The council seat lies at Loxton, while it maintains a branch office at Waikerie.

Ramco is a town in the Riverland region of South Australia 170 kilometres (110 mi) north-east of the state capital, Adelaide and 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) west of Waikerie. At the 2016 census, Ramco had a population of 166. It is on the south (left) bank of the Murray River downstream from Waikerie.
The land within the conservation park was part of a forest reserve known as the Waikerie Forest Reserve which was proclaimed under the Forestry Act 1950 and which existed from 19 March 1992 until 25 November 2004. [6] [7] [8]
The conservation park is classified as an IUCN Category III protected area. [2]

IUCN's mission is to "influence, encourage and assist societies throughout the world to conserve nature and to ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable".
Protected areas of South Australia consists of protected areas located within South Australia and its immediate onshore waters and which are managed by South Australian Government agencies. As of March 2018, South Australia contains 359 separate protected areas declared under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972, the Crown Land Management Act 2009 and the Wilderness Protection Act 1992 which have a total land area of 211,387.48 km2 (81,617.16 sq mi) or 21.5% of the state's area.
