The wilderness protection area was proclaimed under the Wilderness Protection Act 1992 on 24 July 2008 on land excised from the Billiatt Conservation Park. [6]

Protected areas of South Australia consists of protected areas located within South Australia and its immediate onshore waters and which are managed by South Australian Government agencies. Lameroo is a town in the Murray Mallee region of South Australia. It is on the Mallee Highway and Pinnaroo railway line about 40 km west of the Victorian border, or 210 km east of Adelaide. It is primarily a service town for the surrounding rural areas, growing grain and sheep. Lameroo now includes the former settlements of Kulkami, Mulpata, Wirha and Gurrai, which were on the Peebinga railway line, and Wilkawatt, which was between Parrakie and Lameroo on the Pinnaroo railway.
Cape Gantheaume Wilderness Protection Area is a protected area located on the south coast of Kangaroo Island in South Australia about 40 km (25 mi) south west of Kingscote. It was established in 1993 on land previously part of the Cape Gantheaume Conservation Park. The area is prime coastal wilderness with high ecological and aesthetic integrity. It is undulating country that has an excellent cover of mallee vegetation and diverse coastal landscapes with high scenic and habitat value. Wilderness quality is evaluated as high in all of the Wilderness Protection Area except a narrow strip on the east coast where it is affected to a minor extent by the presence of a rough track along the eastern coastline.
Cape Gantheaume Conservation Park, formerly the Cape Gantheaume National Park, is a protected area in the Australian state of South Australia located on the south coast of Kangaroo Island. The wilderness protection area was proclaimed in October 1993 under the Wilderness Protection Act 1992 in order to ‘protect and preserve the outstandingly high wilderness qualities of the area.’ It was created on land excised from the Kelly Hill Conservation Park. It is classified as an IUCN Category Ib protected area.
