Protected areas of South Australia consists of protected areas located within South Australia and its immediate onshore waters and which are managed by South Australian Government agencies. As of March 2018, South Australia contains 359 separate protected areas declared under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972, the Crown Land Management Act 2009 and the Wilderness Protection Act 1992 which have a total land area of 211,387.48 km2 (81,617.16 sq mi) or 21.5% of the state's area.
Murray River National Park is a protected area in South Australia located between 180 kilometres (110 mi) and 240 km (150 mi) north east of the Adelaide city centre. The national park was proclaimed in 1991 "to conserve a significant proportion of South Australia’s floodplain environments which are not represented widely in other reserve systems." The national park consists of three sections adjoining the Murray River and extending from near Loxton in the south west to near Renmark in the north-east. The first which is known as the ‘Katarapko’ section is located on the north side of the river between Loxton in the south and Berri in the north. The second section which is known as the ‘Lyrup Flats’ section is located on the north side of the river midway between Berri and Loxton. The third section is known as the ‘Bulyong’ section is located on the west side of the river upstream from Renmark. The national park is classified as an IUCN Category VI protected area.
The Riverland Biosphere Reserve, formerly the Bookmark Biosphere Reserve, is a 9,000 square kilometres area of land in eastern South Australia, adjoining the states of New South Wales and Victoria. It is one of 14 biosphere reserves in Australia and is part of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves, being officially recognized and listed by UNESCO in 1977.
Danggali Conservation Park is a protected area located about 65 kilometres north of Renmark in South Australia. The conservation park was proclaimed under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972 in 1976. In 2009, a portion of the conservation park was excised to create the Danggali Wilderness Protection Area. The conservation park is classified as an IUCN Category Ia protected area.
Gum Lagoon Conservation Park is an 8765 ha protected area about 40 km south-west of Keith in the Limestone Coast region of South Australia. It lies about 20 km inland from the southern end of the Coorong. It contains an isolated block of mallee woodland important for malleefowl conservation.
Peebinga Conservation Park is a 34 km2 protected area lying 40 km north of the town of Pinnaroo in the Murray Mallee region of south-eastern South Australia, about 240 km east of Adelaide and 10 km west of the Victorian border.
Chowilla Regional Reserve is protected area in the Australian state of South Australia located in the gazetted locality of Chowilla about 250 kilometres (160 mi) north-east of the state capital of Adelaide. It was proclaimed 8 April 1993 in conjunction with the Chowilla Game Reserve and has an area of 75,221 hectares. ‘It protects and conserves a semi-arid environment adjacent to the Murray River. The dominant land uses of the reserve are pastoral production, conservation of natural and historic features and tourism/recreation.’
Munyaroo Conservation Park is a protected area in the Australian state of South Australia in the gazetted locality of Midgee located on the east coast of the Eyre Peninsula about 36 kilometres south south-west of Whyalla and 35 kilometres east north-east of Cowell.
Lincoln Conservation Park is a protected area in the Australian state of South Australia located in the Eyre Peninsula in the gazetted locality of Tulka on land in the Section 490 in the cadastral unit of Hundred of Lincoln about 15 kilometres south west of Port Lincoln.
Bakara Conservation Park is a protected area of mallee scrub in the Murray Mallee region of South Australia. It is located in the locality of Maggea on the southern side of the Stott Highway.
Caratoola Recreation Park is a protected area in the Australian state of South Australia located in the locality of Haslam about 0.5 kilometres north of the town of Haslam and about 35 kilometres north of the town of Streaky Bay.
Ironstone Hill Conservation Park is a protected area in the Australian state of South Australia located on the Eyre Peninsula in the gazetted locality of Middleback Range about 53 kilometres east south-east of the town of Kimba on the west side of the Middleback Range.
Taylorville Station is a protected area located in the east of the Australian state of South Australia about 35 kilometres north west of the town of Renmark and about 250 kilometres east of the state capital of Adelaide. It is a protected area which is under the control of the Australian government rather than the Government of South Australia and which is managed by a private organisation under contract. Taylorville Station is part of an area whose habitat has been listed as "critical" for the survival of the bird species, black-eared miner. It is also part of a larger reserve system known as the Riverland Biosphere Reserve.
