The The Sporting News Manager of the Year Award was established in 1936 by The Sporting News (formerly Sporting News from 2002 to 2022) and was given annually to one manager in Major League Baseball. In 1986 it was expanded to honor one manager from each league.

He previously managed the Cleveland Indians/Guardians, Boston Red Sox, and Philadelphia Phillies. Francona played in MLB from 1981 to 1988 for the Montreal Expos, Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Indians, and Milwaukee Brewers.
Craig John Counsell is an American former professional baseball infielder and current manager for the Chicago Cubs of Major League Baseball (MLB). He was previously the manager for the Milwaukee Brewers and holds the Brewers’ franchise record for managerial wins. He led the team to five of their ten all-time postseason appearances, winning one playoff series.
