Tiruchirappalli Junction railway station, also known as Trichy Junction railway station (station code: TPJ) is a junction station in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu. It serves as the headquarters for Tiruchirappalli railway division of the Southern Railway zone. The station code is TPJ, used for official purposes. Daily approximately 15,000 passengers are using this Tiruchirappalli Junction. TPJ is the only railway station in southern railway to host diesel–electric multiple unit (DEMU) shed. Tiruchirappalli Junction is the second largest railway station in Tamil Nadu and one of the busiest railway stations in India. The Station was awarded with ‘GOLD [3] ’ (72 Points) rating in March 2020 by the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) for implementing various environment-friendly measures. It is the first [4] and only station in Southern Railway to get "GOLD" certification and 5th across Indian Railways.

The Great Southern of India, a railway company was established in 1853 with Tiruchirappalli as its headquarters. [5] In 1859, the company constructed its first railway line that connected Tiruchirappalli with Nagapattinam. [5] Presently, Tiruchirappalli is an important railway junction in Tamil Nadu and is a separate division of the Southern Railway. [6]

It has been awarded 5 stars for electricity conservation. Golden Rock Railway Workshop and Diesel Loco Shed were involved in maintaining the bogies and locomotives respectively for passenger and freight operations. The station is also equipped with free Wi-Fi, [7] retiring rooms, [8] and AC lounge for passengers at 1st platform. [9] The construction of new platform no.8 is on fastrack to reduce the waiting of trains. There is Frequent Passenger Trains towards Karur, Erode, Thanjavur, Karaikudi, Virudhachalam and Dindigul.

The Southern Railway, headquartered at Chennai, is one of the 18 zones of Indian Railways. It is the earliest of the 18 zones of the Indian Railways created in independent India. It was created on 14 April 1951 by merging three state railways, namely, the Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway, the South Indian Railway Company, and the Mysore State Railway. The South Indian Railway was originally created in the British colonial times as Great Southern of India Railway Co founded in Britain in 1853 and registered in 1859. The Boat Mail or Indo-Ceylon Express is a express train that connects Rameswaram with the state capital Chennai via Devakottai. During 1900's it was a combined train and steamer ferry service between India and Ceylon. Connecting Chennai and Colombo, the system initially utilised a rail-to-sea operation, but changed to a rail-to-sea-to-rail operation. The 12651 / 12652 Tamil Nadu Sampark Kranti Express is one of the Sampark Kranti Express trains, operating on India's broad-gauge network that connects Madurai Junction in Tamil Nadu and Hazrat Nizamuddin in New Delhi, a distance of approximately 2,676 kilometres (1,663 mi) in 42 hours approximately, maintaining an average speed of 63 km/h (39 mph). It shares its rakes with 22623/22624 Chennai Egmore–Madurai Junction–Chennai Egmore Bi-weekly Superfast Express. From April 2021, it runs with newly manufactured highly refurbished LHB rakes.

Mayiladuthurai–Mysuru Express is an overnight regional rail service connecting Mayiladuthurai Junction in Tamil Nadu with Mysuru Junction in Karnataka via Kumbakonam, Thanjavur Junction, Tiruchirappalli Junction, Erode Junction, Hosur and Bangalore City.

The station is a part of the Tiruchirappalli railway division of the Southern Railway Zone and connects the city to various parts of the state as well as the rest of the country.The station was declared as cleanest railway station in Tamil Nadu and ranked fifth best in the national level in 2016. It is classified as an "'A' category railway station" in the Trichy railway division of the Southern Railway Zone.It is one of the busiest and top revenue generating stations of the Southern Railway zone after Tiruchirapalli TPJ, Thanjavur TJ in Tiruchirapalli division. The Shradha Sethu express connected Kumbakonam to Ayodhya. The well-known Mahamaham tank is 3 km (1.9 mi) from the railway station.
