After winning once and finishing fourth in points, Travis Kvapil of Addington Racing was named the Truck Series Rookie of the Year, narrowly defeating Ricky Hendrick, teammate to champion Jack Sprague. Matt Crafton and Billy Bigley Jr. both posted several top-tens during the season and finished close to each other in points. Jon Wood, Brian Rose, Larry Gunselman, and Ricky Sanders all made limited runs, while Willy T. Ribbs became the first African American to make a full-time bid for the Craftsman Truck Series championship. Chuck Hossfeld and Nathan Haseleu signed to drive for Roush Racing after winning its "Gong Show" competition, but were released early in the season.

It was contested over twenty-five races, beginning with the GM Flex Fuel 250 at Daytona International Speedway and ending with the Ford 200 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Todd Bodine of Germain Racing won the drivers' championship, making him the first driver to win a top-three NASCAR championship in a foreign make vehicle (Toyota).

Dale Earnhardt of Richard Childress Racing was crowned champion at season's end, winning consecutive Winston Cups for the third time in his career and tying Richard Petty for the record of most top-level NASCAR championships with seven. It was also the 7th and final NASCAR Winston Cup Series Championship for Dale Earnhardt before his death 7 years later in 2001, this was also the final season for 18-time Winston Cup winner Harry Gant.

The season began on February 14 at Daytona International Speedway with the Camping World 300. The season concluded on November 21 at Homestead–Miami Speedway with the Ford 300. With 25 top-five finishes, Kyle Busch was the season champion. He finished 210 points clear of Carl Edwards and 318 ahead of Brad Keselowski.
