A by-election for the Teplice Senate seat in the Czech Republic was held in 2020, following the death of Jaroslav Kubera. [1] The election, originally scheduled for 27 and 28 March 2020, [2] was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the Czech Republic. [3] The first round was eventually held on 5 and 6 June 2020. Hynek Hanza received the highest number of votes and advanced to a runoff, in which he defeated Zdeněk Bergman and became the new Senator. [4] [5] [6]
Jaroslav Kubera served as a Senator of the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic from 2000, representing the ODS. He won his last Senate election in 2018, following which he was elected the President of the Senate of the Czech Republic. [7] [8] His seat became vacant on 20 January 2020 upon his death. The by-election for the seat was due to be held no later than 90 days following his death. [9] The date for the first round of the by-election was set for 27 and 28 March 2020. [10]
Talks about potential candidates started after Kubera's burial on 3 February 2020. It was reported that Tomáš Tožička and Zdeněk Bergman would compete for the Pirate Party nomination. [11] The ODS offered nomination to Mayor of Teplice, Hynek Hanza. Hanza didn't confirm his candidacy, stating that he had to consider if he could be a Senator and Mayor at the same Time. [12] Governor of Ústí region Oldřich Bubeníček expressed his intention to run as a Communist candidate. [13]
On 5 February 2020 Mayor of Bílina Zuzana Schwarz Bařtipánová announced her candidacy as the nominee of ANO 2011. [14]
Voting on the Pirate nomination was held on 7 February 2020. Tomáš Tožička defeated Zdeněk Bergman receiving 26 votes against Bergman's 6 votes. Tožička was previously noted for his views close to the far-left and his statement that "capitalism and right wing politics are just crimes against humanity" and "Joseph Stalin was an amateur in comparison with them." [15] Oldřich Bubeniček officially announced his candidacy on the same day. [16]
On 7 February 2020, Zbyněk Šimbera, Mayor of Duchcov, was announced as the nominee of the Czech Social Democratic Party and Bohumil Ježek was announced as the nominee of Freedom and Direct Democracy. TOP 09 announced it wouldn't stand its candidate. Hynek Hanza and Zdeněk Bergman were reported to be considering candidacy. [17] [18] On 8 February 2020 Zdeněk Pešek announced his candidacy as a candidate of Tricolour Citizens' Movement. [19]
Nominations were closed on 10 February 2020 with 11 nominated candidates. [20] Hynek Hanza announced his candidacy as the nominee of the Civic Democratic Party. Hanza stated that he wanted to continue in Kubera's work. Hanza stated that it was hard for him to accept the nomination, as Kubera was his political teacher and personal friend. [21] Kubera's main rival from 2018 Senate election Bergman also announced his candidacy as the nominee of Senator 21 with support from TOP 09. [20]
On 23 February 2020 KDU-ČSL endorsed Hanza for the position of the Senator stating it believed he would be a dignified and successful Senator. [22] On 27 February 2020 the names of 10 candidates were announced. The candidacy of Jan Vondrouš was rejected as his nomination was made by an unauthorised person. [23]
Tožička's past statements on social networks led to a vote in the Czech Pirate Party about withdrawing his nomination. Voting finished with 249 members supporting Tožička while 232 members backed withdrawing his nomination. Tožička thus remained party's nominee when voting concluded on 18 February 2020. [24] Another controversy started when it was published that Tožička criticised Israel's operation military in Gaza in 2008 calling Israel a fascist state and drawing a swastika in the Star of David. The leadership of the Pirate Party called Tožička to withdraw from election on 2 March 2020. [25] Ústí nad Labem regional organisation of Pirates backed up Tožička, announcing on 3 March 2020 that it supported Tožička's candidacy calling him a "Man of High Moral Principles." [26] Tožička's candidacy was withdrawn on 4 March 2020 despite the regional organisation's stance. [27]
The Czech government decided to delay the by-election due to COVID-19 pandemic in the Czech Republic. On 1 April 2020 the Supreme Administrative Court stated that the election had been postponed illegally, as the Government doesn't have jurisdiction to delay an election, noting that Parliament was supposed to decide about the delay. [28] [29] On 6 May 2020 a new election date was scheduled for 5 and 6 June 2020. [30]
The first round was held on 5 and 6 June 2020. Mayor of Teplice Hynek Hanza and Headmaster of Teplice Grammar School Zdeněk Bergman advanced to the second round with 29.73% and 22.15% of votes respectively with Governor of Ústí nad Labem Region Oldřich Bubeniček in third place. [5] [31]
The runoff was held on 13 June 2020. Hanza received 57% of votes against Bergman's 43% of votes and thus won the election. Hanza stated that he appreciates the support voters gave him and feels it as a big obligation. Bergman congratulated him on the result despite admitting disappointment. Hanza will hold the seat until Autumn 2024. [32] Voter turnout in the second round was only 9%. [33]

Hanza was elected to become the Senator for the rest of Kubera's term which would expire in 2024. Hanza was sworn in office on 22 July 2020 and became 19th Member of the Civic Democratic Party Senate Caucus. Hanza joined Senate Committee on Spatial Development, Public Administration and the Environment. [38]
Senate elections were held in the Czech Republic on 7 and 8 October 2016, with a second round on 14 and 15 of October. The first round was held alongside regional elections and several municipal referendums, notably in a referendum in Brno on the location of the town's train station.
Civic Democratic Party presidential primaries, 2012 were held for 2013 Czech presidential election from 30 April to 28. June 2012. They were the first presidential primaries in the Czech Republic. Přemysl Sobotka on the primaries with 61% of votes against 39 votes for the other candidate, Evžen Tošenovský. Primaries suffered for low voter turnout as only 6,203 from 27,000 party members voted.
Jaroslav Kubera was a Czech politician for the Civic Democratic Party, who served in the Czech Senate representing Teplice from 2000 and the Senate President from 2018 until his death in 2020. He previously served as mayor of Teplice from 1994 to 2018.
Senate district 70 – Ostrava-City is electoral district to the Senate, upper house of the Parliament of the Czech Republic, comprising part of Ostrava-City District. The district is represented by Civic Democratic Senator Zdeněk Nytra.
Jan Sobotka is a Czech politician who has served as Mayor of Vrchlabí since 1998 and Senator from Trutnov since 2018.
Senate elections were held in the Czech Republic on 5 and 6 October 2018 alongside municipal elections, with a second round held on 12 and 13 October 2018. The Conservative Civic Democratic Party (ODS) won the election with 10 seats. Governing parties ANO 2011 and the Czech Social Democratic Party were heavily defeated, winning only 1 seat each. The Communist Party lost its last seat in the Senate when Václav Homolka failed to be re-elected, meaning the party would be without representation in the Senate for the first time in the history of Czech Republic. The election was considered the first major win for the opposition to Andrej Babiš' Cabinet. Commentators including Josef Kopecký also noted ODS confirmed their position as the main opposition party, ahead of the Czech Pirate Party.
A by-election for the Zlín Senate seat in the Czech Republic was held on 18 and 19 May 2018 as a result of František Čuba's resignation. The second round was heldr 25 and 26 May 2018. Michaela Blahová and Tomáš Goláň advanced to second round. The election was surprisingly won by Tomáš Goláň. Voter turnout was very low.
Election of the President of the Senate of the Czech Republic was held on 14 November 2018. It was held after 2018 Senate election. Civic Democratic Party nominated Jaroslav Kubera, Mayors and Independents nominated Jan Horník and Christian and Democratic Union – Czechoslovak People's Party nominated Václav Hampl. Incumbent President Milan Štěch doesn't seek reelection. It was the first time in the history of the Senate that more than 2 candidates run for the position. Senate factions usually came to an agreement about the new President in the past.
An election was held on 24 November 2010 to choose a new president of the Senate of the Czech Republic. Milan Štěch became the new president.
A by-election was held in the Czech Republic on 5 and 6 April 2019 for the Prague 9 Senate seat. The incumbent Senator Zuzana Baudyšová, elected as a candidate of ANO 2011, announced her resignation on 29 January 2019 due to health problems. Jan Jarolím and David Smoljak advanced to the second round. Smoljak was eventually elected the new Senator.
The Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia (KSČM) held a leadership election on 23 October 2021. MEP Kateřina Konečná was elected the new leader.
Elections to regional councils in the Czech Republic in 13 regions were held on 2–3 October 2020.
Election of the President of the Senate of the Czech Republic was held on 19 February 2020 following death of incumbent President Jaroslav Kubera. Civic Democratic Party nominated Miloš Vystrčil for the position of the new Senate President while the Mayors and Independents nominated the acting President Jiří Růžička. Vystrčil won the election with 52 votes against Růžička's 21 votes.

Spolu is a Czech centre-right political alliance formed for the 2021 legislative election, composed of the Civic Democratic Party, KDU-ČSL, and TOP 09. As of the 2021 Czech election it governs the Czech Republic in a coalition with the Pirates and Mayors alliance.
Senate elections were held in the Czech Republic on 23 and 24 September 2022 alongside municipal elections. The election were won by the Spolu alliance consisting of the Civic Democratic Party (ODS), KDU-ČSL and TOP 09 which won 20 seats. The ODS was the most successful party, winning eight seats.
The 2022 Prague municipal election was held in September 2022 as part of the nationwide municipal elections to elect members of the Prague City Assembly. It was a victory for Spolu which received the highest number of votes and seats ahead of ANO 2011 in second place. The Czech Pirate Party led by incumbent Mayor Zdeněk Hřib finished third. New coalition was formed 5 months after election and it consists of Spolu, Pirates and STAN. Bohuslav Svoboda became the new mayor.
The 2022 Plzeň municipal election was held on 23 and 24 September 2022 as part of the nationwide municipal elections. The result was a narrow victory for Spolu which received highest number of votes but was tied with ANO 2011 by number of seats. After the election ANO 2011 formed coalition with Czech Pirate Party and Mayors and Independents with Roman Zarzycký as the new Mayor. New coalition was to be supported by 2 SPD members of the assembly but after disagreement of Piráti and STAN leadership they were replaced by PRO Plzeň.
Election of the President of the Senate of the Czech Republic was held on 2 November 2022 after 2022 Senate election. The incumbent president ran unopposed and was elected for another term.
