A2Z is a Philippine free-to-air blocktime broadcast television network based in Quezon City, with its studios located in Ortigas Center, Pasig. It serves as a flagship property of ZOE Broadcasting Network in partnership with ABS-CBN Corporation as its main content provider through a blocktime agreement. A2Z's flagship television station is DZOE-TV which operates on channel 11 (analog broadcast), and channel 20 (digital broadcast). [1] [2] The network's name is an abbreviation derived from the first letter of the names of two media companies, ABS-CBN and ZOE, and the channel number of the now-recalled frequency of the former network (which is now owned by Advanced Media Broadcasting System's All TV, which ironically, also broadcasting several programs from A2Z, marking the return of ABS-CBN programs to the original frequencies). History

ZOE TV-11

DZOE-TV Channel 11, also known as ZOE TV-11 was launched in 1998 after being acquired from Delta Broadcasting System. It served as the television arm of Jesus is Lord Church led by Eddie Villanueva. In 2005, ZOE TV-11 was leased by Citynet Network Marketing and Productions, subsidiary of GMA Network, to serve as originating station for its secondary television networks QTV/Q and GMA News TV (now GTV). [9] However, on April 24, 2019, GMA/Citynet announced that it will terminate its blocktime agreement with ZOE Broadcasting by the end of May 2019. The split comes after the release of GMA's 2018 financial report which declared the increasing lease payments that the network contributes to ZOE for the past three years (from ₱899.89 million in 2016 to almost a billion pesos in 2018). [10] GMA News TV disaffiliated from ZOE TV-11 on June 4, 2019, before the channel signed off the next day.

On June 22, 2020, ZOE TV-11 returned on air and carried the feed of Light TV as part of its test broadcast operations, but on June 26, the simulcast was replaced by Hillsong Channel, which is owned by Trinity Broadcasting Network, before reverting to Light TV feed on July 11. It was rumored to be part of marketing the channel to either possibly continuing the analog simulcast of their sister station UHF 33 or for the airtime leasing.

ABS-CBN shutdown and agreement rumors

On May 5, 2020, the broadcast operations of ABS-CBN Corporation, including Channel 2, S+A, DZMM Radyo Patrol, My Only Radio, and all digital television channels of ABS-CBN TV Plus and Direct broadcast via satellite of Sky Direct and AMCARA (on June 30) were put off the air after the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) and Solicitor General Jose Calida issued a cease-and-desist order demanding ABS-CBN to immediately cease all of its free TV and radio broadcasting upon the expiration of its legislative broadcast franchise. [11] [12] Later, the Congress rejected ABS-CBN's application for franchise renewal on July 10, and the NTC recalled all the broadcast frequencies (including its now-defunct sister networks S+A, Yey! and Asianovela Channel) assigned to ABS-CBN on September 10. From July 28, 2012 to September 10, 2020, ABS-CBN was subjected to disputes with the government of former Presidents Benigno Aquino III and Rodrigo Duterte due to several issues such as accusations of political meddling and unjust reporting, campaign advertisement controversies during the 2016 election, and the legality of the operations of digital television channel Kapamilya Box Office (KBO), among others. [13]

ABS-CBN resumed its broadcast programming through the launch of its cable and satellite television network Kapamilya Channel on June 13, where it carried ABS-CBN's dramas and live entertainment shows, news and current affairs programming before the May 5 stoppage. [14] [15]

Since 2017, ZOE Broadcasting Network and ABS-CBN Corporation were reportedly holding talks for possible airtime lease of Channel 11 or acquisition of the network itself if the issues regarding ABS-CBN's now-expired broadcast franchise were ever floated. [16] [17] Reports of a blocktime agreement between ABS-CBN and ZOE began to surface after the Congress rejected ABS-CBN franchise renewal in July 2020, with a tentative schedule offering for broadcasting 20 hours of airtime on Channel 11, and ABS-CBN programs were shopped to air on ZOE TV. [18] [19] [20] [21] Eventually, all ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs programs were declined to broadcast on Channel 11 by the ZOE management due to editorial concerns until January 1, 2022, when TV Patrol officially began the simulcast of its weekend edition, and its regular edition on January 3, marking its return to free-to-air television, almost two years since the newscast made its final broadcast on the original Channel 2, until April 15, 2024, when it begin simulcast on All TV. [22] [3] [23]

Launch and broadcasting

On October 6, 2020, through separate statements, ABS-CBN and ZOE TV publicly announced their blocktime agreement and the rebranding of Channel 11 to A2Z, more than a year after being disaffiliated from GMA News TV (now GTV) and five months after the Channel 2 shutdown. [24] [25] The announcement came a day after Sky Cable, ABS-CBN's cable television arm, added ZOE TV 11 to the channel lineup. [26]

Meanwhile, after a month of launching of the said new channel, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) was reportedly investigating ABS-CBN and ZOE Broadcasting Network to determine if the said blocktime agreement of the two stations was processed in legal ways. [27] [28]

On November 12, 2020, A2Z began its broadcast on digital terrestrial television. The channel is available on most digital TV boxes. [29]

In March 2024, A2Z was relaunched with the new tagline: "Kumpleto Tayo".

On July 1, 2024, A2Z (along with its cable counterpart, Kapamilya Channel), began broadcasting using the anamorphic 16:9 screen ratio format; the said move was done in order to allow widescreen presentation of the network's programs, as well as to provide viewers with optimized viewing experience. As the channel uses the same playout with its cable counterpart Kapamilya Channel and the defunct ABS-CBN terrestrial network on most of A2Z's broadcasting (except broadcasts that are independent from or not using the main ABS-CBN/Kapamilya Channel feed which are It's Showtime , ASAP , and other programs from other networks where a commercial break bumper for the network teasers is shown between the advertisements and resume of a program where they use A2Z's own playout), the move effectively phased out the 4:3 aspect ratio used by ABS-CBN for almost 71 years since the network and the Philippine television established on October 23, 1953, and 6 years and 2 months when the ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs programs switch to full high definition on April 2, 2018, alongside with the aforementioned programs using A2Z's own broadcast feed.

Partnership with PCMC and digital terrestrial expansion

On September 18, 2021, A2Z entered a partnership agreement with Philippine Collective Media Corporation for affiliation to broadcast the network via Channel 12 in selected parts of Eastern Visayas. [30] In January 2022, the country's National Telecommunications Commission granted a provisional authority for ZOE, to utilize UHF channel 20 for its DTT operations; this allowed the network to transmit both A2Z and its sister channel Light TV terrestrially outside Metro Manila. [31]

Programming

As part of the agreement between ABS-CBN and ZOE TV, the list of all television original programming by A2Z focuses on news and entertainment programs produced by ABS-CBN from Kapamilya Channel, serving as its main free-to-air broadcast affiliate. In addition, similar to its previous airtime lease with GMA/Citynet for Channel 11, A2Z features content from ZOE TV's sister station Light TV and its content partners CBN Asia and Trinity Broadcasting Network, as well as produces its independent late-night newscast Balitang A2Z and afternoon bulletin Ulat A2Z every weekdays.

Availability

A2Z is seen via ZOE TV's flagship station DZOE-TV Channel 11 in Mega Manila, it also available via digital terrestrial UHF channel 20 in Cebu, Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Iloilo and Zamboanga and UHF channel 32 in Baguio, the main channel-said and its sister channel Light TV was also continuing their expansion of digital terrestrial television in other key provinces soon as possible.

It was founded in 1962 with Mga Bayani sa Kalawakan as its first program. Laurenti Dyogi is the head of the division. The shutdown of ABS-CBN broadcasting arose from the lack of renewal of Philippine media network ABS-CBN's congressional broadcast franchise. The disputes between the administrations of Presidents Benigno Aquino III and Rodrigo Duterte and the media conglomerate arose over the terms and conditions of the franchise renewal agreement. Amid the controversy, the Congress of the Philippines, the country's legislature, was unable to renew the franchise before its expiration date. The congressional franchise expired on May 4, 2020, while the Philippines was dealing with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the enhanced community quarantine in Luzon. The next day, exercising constitutional powers, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) issued a cease-and-desist order demanding ABS-CBN cease all of its free TV and radio broadcasting operations immediately. ABS-CBN complied with the government order and shut down all of its radio stations and free television channels later that day. On June 30, 2020, the NTC released two alias cease-and-desist orders against ABS-CBN TV Plus and Sky Direct.
