The Cedar Rapids Police Department is the municipal police department for the city of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Early historical records from the 1840s indicate that a lone constable served the Cedar Rapids population. By 1883, the Cedar Rapids Police Department had grown to 12 Police Officers. In 1948, the department completed an FM police radio installation which allowed all emergency services to communicate with each other. [1]
The department has a substation located at 1233 1st Avenue SE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The substation is also known as the Community Connections Resource Center and was opened in 2009. The substation serves as a space for police officers to complete reports and other duties, and is also used by employees of the Willis Dady Emergency Homeless shelter and for various community meetings and events. A traffic stop in which a Cedar Rapids Police Officer shot a man on November 1 gathered national attention. [3] Officer Lucas Jones, shot and paralyzed a motorist, Jerime Mitchell, from the neck down. [4] Upon a search of Mitchell's vehicle, one pound (0.45 kg) of marijuana, $1,500 in cash, and scales were located. Police also reviewed Mitchell's cell phone records and discovered text messages in which he planned to sell the marijuana to a customer. [5] Officer Jones has been cleared of any criminal charges by a grand jury. [6]
In the history of the Cedar Rapids Police Department, six officers have been killed while on duty. [7]
The York Regional Police (YRP) is the police service of the Regional Municipality of York, Ontario, Canada. YRP was formed in 1971 from the police forces maintained by the nine municipalities which amalgamated into York Region at the time. The force had a strength of over 1,500 sworn members and 618 unsworn members as of 2015.

The Iowa flood of 2008 was a hydrological event involving most of the rivers in eastern Iowa which began June 8 and continued until July 1. Flooding continued on the Upper Mississippi River in the southeastern area of the state for many more days. The phrase "Iowa's Katrina" was often heard.
The murder of Laquan McDonald took place on October 20, 2014, in Chicago, Illinois. McDonald was a 17-year-old who was fatally shot by a Chicago Police Officer, Jason Van Dyke. Police had initially reported that McDonald was behaving erratically while walking down the street, refusing to put down a knife, and that he had lunged at officers. Preliminary internal police reports described the incident similarly, leading to the shooting being judged as justifiable, and Van Dyke not being charged at the time. This was later disproved after a video of the encounter was released, showing that McDonald was walking away.
On August 13, 2016, a riot began in the Sherman Park neighborhood in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, sparked by the fatal police shooting of 23-year-old Sylville Smith. During the three-day turmoil, several people, including police officers, were injured and dozens of protesters arrested. A nightly curfew was set up for teenagers in the area.
On July 11, 2016, Randy Lozoya and John Tennis, two Sacramento police officers, attempted to run over, and later shot and killed Joseph Mann, a 51-year-old mentally ill and homeless African-American man armed with a knife.

On December 28, 2017, a fatal swatting incident occurred in Wichita, Kansas, United States. During an online dispute between Casey Viner and Shane Gaskill, regarding the video game Call of Duty: WWII, Viner threatened to have Gaskill swatted. Gaskill responded by giving him a false address for his residence, one that was occupied by an uninvolved person, Andrew Finch. Viner then asked Tyler Barriss to make the required fraudulent call to initiate the swatting. Wichita Police responded to the address, and as Finch was exiting his house, police officer Justin Rapp fatally shot him.
Dijon Kizzee, an African-American man, was shot and killed in the Los Angeles County community of Westmont on August 31, 2020, by deputies of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD). For days, protesters gathered outside the South Los Angeles sheriff's station. By September 6, those demonstrations had escalated to clashes, with deputies firing projectiles and tear gas at the crowds and arresting 35 people over four nights of unrest.
