The Cheran Superfast Express is an overnight Super Fast Express train in India which runs daily between Coimbatore Junction and Chennai Central via Salem Jn on the Southern Railway zone of the Indian Railways.

History

It was inaugurated on Jul 05, 1984 as a day train between Coimbatore Junction and Madras Central, with Air-Conditioned Chair Car and Second Class Sitting coaches to run opposite Kovai Express was changed to run night time with Sleeper Coaches. At present, Coimbatore–Chennai Central Intercity is running in the old schedule of Cheran express

Numbering

Train Number 12673 runs from Chennai Central to Coimbatore Junction while 12674 runs from Coimbatore Junction to Chennai Central. [1] [2] [3] The Cheran Express began to run with LHB coaches from 10 November 2017. [4]

The train is hauled by WAP 7 locomotive on its entire route.

Route

Incidents

In 2005, an unknown person was killed in a fire inside a toilet on the train. [7]

In 2007, five coaches of the train derailed near Ambur due to a lower bearing failure resulting in ten passengers getting injured. [8]

The Silambu Super fast Express (20681/20682) is a train that runs between Chennai Egmore and Sengottai via Karaikkudi Junction. Initially it ran up to Manamadurai, later it was extended up to Sengottai. It was the only train in Indian Railways where LHB rakes were replaced by ICF coaches again. According to IR if a train gets new LHB coaches it won't be converted to ICF. But this train was again replaced with ICF coaches after getting new LHB rakes. The train must to be restored with LHB coaches before December 31, 2023.

The 18009 / 18010 Santragachi–Ajmer Weekly Express is an Express train belonging to South Eastern Railway zone that runs between Santragachi Junction and Ajmer Junction in India. It is currently being operated with 18009/18010 train numbers on a weekly basis.
