These schools and programs prepare students for entry into careers in public health. The primary professional degree is the Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) but other master's and doctoral degrees are offered as well such as the Doctor of Public Health (DrPH).

The Doctor of Public Health is a doctoral degree awarded in the field of public health. The DrPH is the highest, and terminal, professional degree in the field of public health. It prepares its recipients for a leadership career in advanced public health practice and administration. Many DrPH holders also hold positions in academia, including teaching and research. DrPH holders often occupy senior or executive leadership roles in private and public sectors, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and international health entities such as the World Health Organization.

The Council is a private, nonprofit corporation directed by a 10-member board. As an independent body, the board is solely responsible for adopting criteria by which schools and programs are evaluated, for establishing policies and procedures, for making accreditation decisions and for managing the business of the corporation.
