The Department of Higher Education is one of the departments of Government of Tamil Nadu. Established in 1997, the department is responsible for formulating policies and regulations for higher education in the state.

Contents

History

The Directorate of Technical Education was established on 14 October 1957. The higher education department was formed in 1997, after bifurcation from the combined education, science and technology department. [1]

Objective

The department is responsible for formulating policies, laws, regulations and programmes for higher education in the state. [2]

Infrastructure

As of 2023, there are 56 universities in the state including 24 public universities. [3] University of Madras was founded in 1857 and is one of India's first modern universities. [4] There are more than 510 engineering colleges in the state including 34 government colleges with the government-run College of Engineering, Guindy, Anna University founded in 1794 is the oldest engineering college in India. [5] [6] [7] There are also 496 polytechnic institutions with 92 government colleges and 935 arts and science colleges in the state including 302 government run colleges. [5] [8]

After being affiliated to University of Madras and Anna University for 25 years, Crescent was Deemed to be University by Indian Government and was known as B.S. Abdur Rahman Crescent University. Chennai is home to many educational and research institutions. IIT Madras, located in South Chennai is considered as the premier centre of engineering education in India. Anna University and the University of Madras are the oldest state owned universities which are ranked among the best universities in India. The College of Engineering, Guindy and Madras Institute of Technology, which are the constituent college of Anna University along with Alagappa College of Technology are the pioneer institutes of engineering education in India. Some of the oldest medical colleges India, the Madras Medical College (1835) and Stanley Medical College (1938) are located in the city. Notable, liberal arts colleges in the city include Loyola College, Madras Christian College, Presidency College, Stella Maris College, Women's Christian College and Ethiraj College for Women.

Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College (SREC) is an autonomous Engineering college in India founded by Sevaratna R. Venkatesalu. Munirathna Anandakrishnan was an Indian civil engineer, educationist, a chairman of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur and a vice-chancellor of Anna University. He was also an Advisor to the Government of Tamil Nadu on Information Technology and e-Governance. A winner of the National Order of Scientific Merit (Brazil), he was honored by the Government of India, in 2002, with Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award.
