London Buses route 465 is a joint Transport for London and Surrey County Council contracted bus route in London and Surrey, England. [1] Running between Kingston upon Thames and Dorking, it is operated by Transport UK London Bus.
The route extends the furthest from London of all Transport for London routes. [2]
From around the mid-1990s, service 465 was operated by London & Country. Upon being re-tendered, it passed to Tellings-Golden Miller on 1 May 1999 and was extended past Kingston to Tellings' Fulwell Bus Garage. On 17 June 2005, route 465 was included in the sale of Tellings-Golden Miller to Travel London. [3]
In May 2006 the route was curtailed at Kingston and replaced by a new, less frequent route 481, despite a protest by a local group to keep the service. [4] [5]
Upon being re-tendered, on 30 June 2007 the route passed to Arriva Guildford & West Surrey. The contract change also saw the route withdrawn from Penrhyn Road in Kingston, due to complaints from residents over the number of buses using the road. The replacement route is via Surbiton Road and Portsmouth Road. [6]
On 3 October 2009, route 465 was included in the sale of Arriva Guildford & West Surrey's Horsham operation to Metrobus. [7] It was the only Transport for London contract to be worked out of the company's Crawley garage.
Upon being re-tendered, on 30 June 2012 the route passed to Quality Line with Optare Versas. [8]
On 25 April 2020, the route was transferred with routes 406 and 418 to London United. [9]
From late June 2024 now run by Transport UK, timetable changed to run typically every 34 minutes.
The route is jointly managed by Transport for London and Surrey County Council. The section between Leatherhead and Dorking is financially supported by the council. [10] [11]

The Portsmouth line is a secondary main line originally built by the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway and the London and South Western Railway between 1847 and 1868. It leaves the South London Line at Peckham Rye, with connections to the Victoria branch of the Brighton Main Line at Streatham, and continues via Sutton, Epsom and Dorking to join the Mid-Sussex Line at Horsham.
The Epsom and Leatherhead Railway (E&LR) was a railway company in Surrey, England. Promoted independently, it opened its short line in 1859 and was worked by the London and South Western Railway (LSWR). It was transferred to the joint ownership of the LSWR and the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway (LBSCR) in 1860. Those companies operated passenger trains to Waterloo and London Bridge station respectively. In 1867 the LBSCR built an extension line from Leatherhead to Dorking, with the declared intention of continuing to the Sussex coast. A new Leatherhead station was built on the new line, and the LSWR was obliged to build its own independent, new Leatherhead station; this was a terminus for some years.
