The Milan International was a world's fair held in Milan in 1906 [1] titled L'Esposizione Internazionale del Sempione, or sometimes The Great Expo of Work. [2] It received 4,012,776 visits and covered 250 acres. [3]

Milan is a city in northern Italy, capital of Lombardy, and the second-most populous city in Italy after Rome, with the city proper having a population of 1,372,810 while its metropolitan city has a population of 3,245,308. Its continuously built-up urban area has a population estimated to be about 5,270,000 over 1,891 square kilometres. The wider Milan metropolitan area, known as Greater Milan, is a polycentric metropolitan region that extends over central Lombardy and eastern Piedmont and which counts an estimated total population of 7.5 million, making it by far the largest metropolitan area in Italy and the 54th largest in the world. Milan served as capital of the Western Roman Empire from 286 to 402 and the Duchy of Milan during the medieval period and early modern age.

The fair opened on 28 April 1906, ran until 31 October [3] and marked the opening of the Simplon Tunnel. The fair was held in Sempione Park and Piazza d'Armi', [2] with the first location hosting fine arts displays and the latter industrial and engineering exhibits, along with the foreign pavilions. [1] Countries contributing included many from Western Europe, [4] China, Japan, Turkey, United States, Canada and several South American countries shared a pavilion. [4]

Simplon Tunnel

The Simplon Tunnel is a railway tunnel on the Simplon railway that connects Brig, Switzerland and Domodossola, Italy, through the Alps, providing a shortcut under the Simplon Pass route. It is straight except for short curves at either end. It actually consists of two single-track tunnels built nearly 15 years apart. The first to be opened is 19,803 m (64,970 ft) long; the second is 19,824 m (65,039 ft) long, making it the longest railway tunnel in the world for most of the twentieth century, from 1906 until 1982, until the Daishimizu Tunnel opened 76 years later.

Built in 1906 on the occasion of the Milan International, It is the only surviving building from the event. Sited on the edge of Sempione Park, the aquarium has over 100 different types of underwater life located in several tanks with a particular attention for the fishes and aquatic vegetation of the Italian seacoasts, lakes, and rivers.
