Mount Kent is a hill on East Falkland, Falkland Islands, [2] and is 458 m (1,501 ft) high. [3] It is located north of Mount Challenger.
The hill saw action during the Falklands War during the Assault on Mount Kent, part of the larger Battle of Mount Harriet. Some of the location is still mined.
The hill's top is occupied by the RRH Mount Kent (Remote Radar Head Mount Kent) of the British Forces South Atlantic Islands (BFSAI), [4] part of an early warning and airspace control network including also RRH Mount Alice and RRH Byron Heights on West Falkland.
The Falkland Islands are located in the South Atlantic Ocean between 51°S and 53°S on a projection of the Patagonian Shelf, part of the South American continental shelf. In ancient geological time this shelf was part of Gondwana, and around 400 million years ago split from what is now Africa and drifted westwards from it. Today the islands are subjected to the Roaring Forties, winds that shape both their geography and climate.
South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (SGSSI) is a British Overseas Territory in the southern Atlantic Ocean. It is a remote and inhospitable collection of islands, consisting of South Georgia and a chain of smaller islands known as the South Sandwich Islands. South Georgia is 165 kilometres (103 mi) long and 35 kilometres (22 mi) wide and is by far the largest island in the territory. The South Sandwich Islands lie about 700 kilometres (430 mi) southeast of South Georgia. The territory's total land area is 3,903 km2 (1,507 sq mi). The Falkland Islands are about 1,300 kilometres (810 mi) west from its nearest point.
Stanley is the capital city of the Falkland Islands. It is located on the island of East Falkland, on a north-facing slope in one of the wettest parts of the islands. At the 2016 census, the city had a population of 2,460. The entire population of the Falkland Islands was 3,398 on Census Day on 9 October 2016.
West Falkland is the second largest of the Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic. It is a hilly island, separated from East Falkland by the Falkland Sound. Its area is 4,532 square kilometres, 37% of the total area of the islands. Its coastline is 1,258.7 kilometres long.
The Camp is the term used in the Falkland Islands to refer to any part of the islands outside the islands' only significant town, Stanley, and often the large RAF base at Mount Pleasant. It is derived from the Spanish word campo, for "countryside".
Remote Radar Head Saxa Vord or RRH Saxa Vord, is a Royal Air Force radar station located on the island of Unst, the most northern of the Shetland Islands in Scotland. As of July 2019 it is once more a fully operational radar station, after closure in 2006. The station's motto Praemoneo de Periculis reflects its role. RAF Saxa Vord is further north than Saint Petersburg in Russia, and on the same latitude as Anchorage, Alaska. The station was named after Saxa Vord, which is the highest hill on Unst at 935 ft (285 m). It holds the unofficial British record for wind speed, which in 1992 was recorded at 197 mph (317 km/h) — just before the measuring equipment blew away.
Mount Longdon is a hill located in the east of East Falkland island forming part of the Falkland Islands Archipelago. It has an elevation of 183 metres above sea level. It is the highest land in any direction for 3 kilometres. Mount Longdon is named after Lt Col Richard Longdon, who was the commanding officer of the 2nd Battalion, Parachute Regiment of the British Army during the Falklands War. It is best known as the site of the Battle of Mount Longdon, and overlooks Stanley, the capital of the Falkland Islands.
Port Stanley Airport, also merely known as Stanley Airport, is a small civil airport in the Falkland Islands, located two miles from the capital, Stanley. This airport is the only civilian airport in the islands with a paved runway. However, the military airbase at RAF Mount Pleasant, located to the west of Stanley, functions as the islands' main international airport, because it has a long runway capable of handling wide-body aircraft, and allows civilian flights by prior permission from the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD). Port Stanley Airport is owned by the Government of the Falkland Islands, operated by the Falkland Islands Government Air Service, and is used for internal flights between the islands and flights between the Falklands and Antarctica. It has two asphalt-paved runways; its main runway 09/27 is 918 by 19 metres, and its secondary runway 18/36 is 338 metres long.
Mount Adam is a mountain on West Falkland, part of the Hill Cove Mountains range. It is the highest mountain on West Falkland and is the second highest in the islands. It has the remains of glacial cirques on it, and is only 5 metres (16 ft) lower than Mount Usborne, the highest peak of the Falkland Islands on East Falkland. Its summit is at 700 metres (2,300 ft). It is south west of Mount Edgeworth. The closest settlements are Hill Cove to the North, and Chartres to the South.
Mount Challenger is a hill on East Falkland, Falkland Islands. It is south of Mount Kent. The area saw some action during the Falklands War, and some of it is still mined. The Murrell River rises on Mount Challenger.
Mario Benjamin Menéndez was the Argentine governor of the Falklands during the 1982 Argentine occupation of the islands. He also served in the Argentine Army. Menéndez surrendered Argentine forces to Britain during the Falklands War.
The Battle of Mount Kent was a series of engagements during the Falklands War, primarily between British and Argentine special forces.
Race Point is the point on the north side of Smylie Channel forming the south extremity of Weddell Island in the Falkland Islands. The point is located at 51°59′22″S61°00′00″W, which is 26.7 km south-southwest of Swan Point, 3.5 km west-northwest of neighbouring Dyke Island, 1.8 km north of West Island and 4 km north-northeast of Orford Hill, West Falkland.
Mount Weddell is the summit of Weddell Island in the Falkland Islands. The mountain rises to 383 metres (1,257 ft) and is situated 8 km northeast of Race Point, 9.8 km east of Pillar Bluff, 4.35 km southwest of Weddell Settlement and 4.6 km west-northwest of Circum Peak.
Pillar Bluff is a headland projecting 1.1 km from the southwest coast of Weddell Island in the Falkland Islands and forming the west side of the entrance to Pillar Cove. It is located at 51°55′47″S61°05′44″W, which is 9.3 km northwest of Race Point, 1.8 km northeast of Horse Block, 4 km southeast of Weddell Point and 9.8 km west of Mount Weddell.
Chatham Harbour is the large bay indenting the central part of Weddell Island in the Falkland Islands. It is entered east of Beacon Point and west of Loop Head. The 3 km wide bay extends 5 km in southeast direction, this part of the feature forming an anchorage named Bald Road, and north of Clay Point turning for 10 km in southwest direction. Chatham Harbour is centred at 51°50′16″S60°57′32″W.
Mount Alice is a mountain rising to 361 m (1,180 ft) at the south extremity of West Falkland, Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic. It is situated between the bays of Port Stephens and Port Albemarle, 12.3 km (7.6 mi) due north of Cape Meredith.
Circum Peak is a hill rising to 198 m (650 ft) in the southeast part of Weddell Island in the Falkland Islands. It is located at, which is 2.12 km (1.32 mi) southeast of Mount Weddell, and surmounts New Year Cove to the southeast and Gull Harbour to the northeast.
Byron Heights is a mountain rising to 497 m (1,630 ft) at the northwest extremity of West Falkland, Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic. It is situated 11.65 km (7.24 mi) southeast of Hope Point.
Remote Radar Head Brizlee Wood, is an air defence radar station operated by the Royal Air Force located at Brizlee Wood, near Alnwick in Northumberland, England. Originally opened as an Ace High site in the early 1960s, it now forms part of the Air Surveillance and Control System (ASACS) of the Royal Air Force.
