The NBR D Class (LNER Class J83) was a class of 0-6-0 tank locomotives designed by Matthew Holmes for short distance freight, station pilot, and heavy shunting duties on the North British Railway.

Service history

They were introduced in 1900 and had inside cylinders and piston valves operated by Stephenson valve gear. Forty of these new Class D engines were delivered in 1900–01, twenty each from Neilson and Company and Sharp, Stewart and Company. [1] At grouping they became LNER class J83.

The class were highly successful in service, with only three failing to complete one million miles (1,600,000 km) during their lifetime. One locomotive, No. 9830, managed to complete two million miles (3,200,000 km). [1]

The engines were commonly seen across the entire North British Railway network, and were the second largest class of tank engines on the railway, after the NBR A class.

Numbering

On the NBR they were numbered in a sequence commencing with 795 (and are sometimes referenced as 795 class engines). A total of 40 locomotives were built, all but one of which came into British Railways (BR) ownership at nationalisation in 1948. BR numbers were 68442–68481. [2]

Withdrawal

One locomotive was withdrawn in 1947, a year before nationalisation, but later the class were gradually displaced by diesel shunters during the 1950s, with the last withdrawn in 1962. All members of the class were scrapped, and there is no surviving example in preservation.

Models

A (very basic) model has been produced by Hornby in OO gauge since the 1980s, but has since been relegated into their RailRoad range.

NBR C Class

The NBR C Class is a class of 0-6-0 steam locomotive designed by Matthew Holmes for freight work on the North British Railway. They were introduced in 1888 and had inside cylinders and Stephenson valve gear. A total of 168 locomotives was built, of which 123 came into British Railways ownership at nationalisation in 1948. This was the last class of steam engine in service in Scotland.

NBR K Class

The NBR K class is a class of 4-4-0 steam locomotive of the North British Railway. The first batch was designed by Matthew Holmes in 1902 and had 6-foot-6-inch (1.981 m) driving wheels for express passenger work. Three more batches were designed by William P. Reid with 6-foot-0-inch (1.829 m) driving wheels for mixed traffic work. This included perishable goods, such as fish from Mallaig and Aberdeen. They had inside cylinders and Stephenson valve gear. The D34 locomotives, commonly known as Glen Class, were built with superheaters. The LNER later fitted superheaters to all D26, D32, and D33 engines as well. All engines of the K class are sometimes known as Glen Class, although the designation is strictly reserved to the fourth (D34) batch.

NBR G Class

The North British Railway (NBR) G Class is a class of 0-4-0ST steam locomotive designed for shunting. Some locomotives were equipped with small wooden tenders to carry extra coal. They were introduced in 1882 and thirty-eight entered service on the NBR between 1882 and 1899. Like most 0-4-0 tanks of the period it has outside cylinders and inside slide valves driven by Stephenson valve gear. The rival Caledonian Railway had the same number (38) of identical locomotives in service. The nickname "Pug" was used on the NBR.

GCR Class 9N

The Great Central Railway Class 9N, classified A5 by the LNER, was a class of 4-6-2 tank locomotives designed by John G. Robinson for suburban passenger services. They were fitted with superheaters, piston valves and Stephenson valve gear.

GER Class L77

The GER Class L77, LNER Class N7, is a class of 0-6-2T steam locomotives. They were designed by Alfred John Hill of the Great Eastern Railway and introduced in 1915. The design was perpetuated by Nigel Gresley of the LNER after the 1923 grouping. 134 were built and one example is preserved.

LNER Class D40

The London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) D40 class is a type of 4-4-0 steam locomotive inherited from the Great North of Scotland Railway (GNSR). It consisted of GNSR class V and GNSR class F. The two classes were similar but the class F was superheated.

GER Class G58

The GER Class G58 was a class of 0-6-0 steam tender locomotives designed by James Holden for the Great Eastern Railway in England. The class consisted partly of new locomotives built from 1905 to 1911 and partly of rebuilds of the earlier GER Class F48 built from 1900 to 1903. The rebuilding started under GER auspices from 1921 and was continued by the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) after grouping in 1923.

Walter Chalmers was a Scottish engineer. He followed his father into the North British Railway, starting as an apprentice at Cowlairs railway works. In 1904 he became Chief Draughtsman and, from 1920 to 1922, he was Chief Mechanical Engineer.

NER Class Y

The North Eastern Railway (NER) Class Y 4-6-2T tank locomotives were designed whilst Wilson Worsdell was Chief Mechanical Engineer, but none were built until 1910 by which time Vincent Raven had taken over.

The NBR Class M was a class of 4-4-0 steam locomotive of the North British Railway. The class was created during the tenures of William P. Reid and Walter Chalmers by rebuilding three earlier types, the "574", "633", and "729", which had all been designed by Matthew Holmes, and shared many features in common. A total of 48 were produced.

NBR J class

The NBR J Class , commonly known as the Scott class, were a class of 4-4-0 steam tender locomotives designed by William P. Reid for the North British Railway. They passed to the London and North Eastern Railway at the grouping in 1923. Forty-three were built, of which thirty-five survived into British Railways ownership in 1948.

The NER Class L was a class of 0-6-0T steam locomotives of the North Eastern Railway. They were a specialised design, intended for use on the Redheugh and Quayside banks on either side of the River Tyne. They were replaced on the Quayside branch by NER Class ES1 electric locomotives in 1905 but were re-allocated to other duties.

NBR S class

The NBR S Class is a class of 0-6-0 steam locomotive designed by William Paton Reid for freight work on the North British Railway. The engines were initially designated as B class, being a development of the standard B class locomotives designed by Reid some eight years previously, and represented the culmination of a long evolution on the NBR of powerful 0-6-0 freight engines. The new locomotives were introduced in 1914 and had superheaters, inside cylinders and piston valves operated by Stephenson valve gear.

NBR B class

The NBR B Class is a class of 0-6-0 steam locomotive designed by William Paton Reid for freight work on the North British Railway. They were introduced in 1906 and had inside cylinders and Stephenson valve gear. The first eighteen locomotives had piston valves and the remainder had slide valves.

NBR A class

The NBR A Class (London and North Eastern Railway Classes N14 and N15 were the standard 0-6-2 tank locomotives designed by William P. Reid for freight duties on the North British Railway. The LNER regarded the original locomotives as two separate classes. The final batch of locomotives was on order at the time of the grouping in 1923.

The NER Class N was a class of 0-6-2 tank locomotives of the North Eastern Railway. It was designed by Wilson Worsdell and introduced in 1893.

NBR N class

The NBR Class N was a class of 4-4-0 steam locomotive of the North British Railway. The class was designed by Matthew Holmes and later rebuilt by Holmes's successor, Reid. A total of 12 were produced.

The NBR Class D was a class of 0-6-0 steam locomotive of the North British Railway, often known as the Wee Drummonds. The class was designed by Dugald Drummond. A total of 101 were produced.

NBR F class

The NBR F Class was a class of 0-6-0 tank locomotives, designed by William P. Reid on the North British Railway. They were used for dockyard shunting duties.
