The NER Class 3CC (LNER Class D19) was a 4-4-0 steam locomotive designed by Wilson Worsdell for the North Eastern Railway and built in 1893. Only one was built (number 1619) and it was a compound expansion version of the simple expansion NER Class M1. The 3CC was originally classified M but was re-classified 3CC in 1914, at the same time as the M1 was re-classified M.

Overview

Number 1619 was built as a Worsdell-von Borries compound with two inside cylinders. In 1898, it was rebuilt as a three-cylinder compound with one inside high-pressure cylinder and two outside low-pressure cylinders, as a test-bed for the development of Walter Mackersie Smith's ideas.

Operations

Around 1907 the Class 3CC locomotive was allocated from the Leeds area to Hull Botanic Gardens engine shed where it generally worked fast trains between Hull Paragon railway station and Bridlington. In 1926 it was transferred to Bridlington although its duties remained unchanged until withdrawal in October 1930. [1]

Accident

On 31 March 1920, the Class 3CC locomotive was derailed at York station whilst hauling a passenger train. [2]

Legacy

Number 1619 was a one-off but W. M. Smith went on to develop a four-cylinder compound system in the NER Class 4CC (LNER Class C8) 4-4-2 locomotive. Number 1619 was withdrawn in 1930 and was not preserved.

Smith's three-cylinder compound system was also used in the Great Central Railway classes 8D and 8E (LNER Class C5) 4-4-2s and achieved its greatest success in the Midland Railway 1000 Class and the LMS Compound 4-4-0. The Great Northern Railway (Ireland)'s class V was also a Smith compound.

Walter Mackersie Smith (1842–1906) was a Scottish engineer who made an important contribution to the development of the compound steam locomotive. His middle name has sometimes been mis-spelt Mackenzie. He was born at Ferry-Port on Craig, Fife.

The North Eastern Railway Class S was a 4-6-0 type of steam locomotive designed for express passenger workings. The first example was built in 1899. They were very similar to the NER Class S1, except for the smaller wheels of the former.

The NER Class P1 was a class of 0-6-0 steam locomotives of the North Eastern Railway. Class P1 was a development of Class P, having a boiler four inches longer, and a firebox six inches longer. To accommodate these, the wheelbase was increased by nine inches. The cylinder stroke was also increased by two inches. None survived into preservation

The NER 38 Class was a class of 4-4-0 steam locomotives designed by Alexander McDonnell for the North Eastern Railway. Twenty-eight were built in 1884–5, and remained in service until 1915–23.

The NER Class A was a class of 2-4-2 tank locomotives designed by Thomas William Worsdell and built at Gateshead works for the North Eastern Railway (NER). Sixty locomotives were built between 1886 and 1892. At this time the class was designated class A by the NER and was the first class in the company to be given an alphabetical letter classification.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">NER Class B1</span>

The NER B and B1 Classes were two classes of 0-6-2 tank locomotives designed by Thomas William Worsdell for heavy freight and mineral on the North Eastern Railway, introduced in 1886. They were tank engine versions of the NER C1 Class 0-6-0, using both simple expansion and also the von Borries configuration for two-cylinder compound locomotives. Both types were later rebuilt using superheated steam and the compounds were also rebuilt as simple expansion locomotives, and eventually formed a single class. Many of the superheated locomotives were also later returned to saturated steam as their original boilers wore out. As a result the classes have had a very complex mechanical history.

The North Eastern Railway was formed by merger in 1854 and merged into the London and North Eastern Railway at the grouping in 1923. Between those dates five men held the post of Locomotive Superintendent.

The NER Class F was a class of 4-4-0 steam locomotives of the North Eastern Railway. It was designed by Thomas William Worsdell and introduced in 1887.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">NER Class V</span> Class of 20 British 4-4-2 locomotives

The NER Class V was a class of twenty steam locomotives of the 4-4-2 wheel arrangement. They were designed by Wilson Worsdell for the North Eastern Railway (NER) as express passenger locomotives.

The NER Class Z was an Atlantic class of locomotives designed by Vincent Raven. It was introduced in 1911.
