Peter Hansen (born 2 June 1941 in Aalborg) is a Danish diplomat who was commissioner-general of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) from 1996 to 2005.
After completing graduate and postgraduate studies in political science at Aarhus University in 1966,Hansen joined the staff of the university as an assistant professor in international relations.
In 1978,Hansen joined the United Nations as assistant secretary-general for programme planning and coordination. Between 1985 and 1992,he served as assistant secretary-general and executive director of the United Nations Centre on Transnational Corporations. In March 1994,he took over the post of Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator.
During his UN tenure,he has served as chairman of the organization's appointment and promotion board and various committees and as the secretary-general's representative to the World Food Programme. He also served as the special representative of the secretary-general to the ad hoc liaison committee established to follow up the Washington Conference in support of the Middle East peace process.
Hansen was appointed commissioner-general of UNRWA by UN Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali on 20 January 1996 and took office on 1 March 1996. His term ended on 31 March 2005 and he retired from United Nations service. [1] Hansen had been critical of Israeli actions,and UN sources said the US had opposed his reappointment. [1]
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East is a UN agency that supports the relief and human development of Palestinian refugees. UNRWA's mandate encompasses Palestinians who fled or were expelled during the Nakba,the 1948 Palestine War,and subsequent conflicts,as well as their descendants,including legally adopted children. As of 2019,more than 5.6 million Palestinians are registered with UNRWA as refugees.

Karen Koning AbuZayd is a senior official of the United Nations. She is currently serving as a Commissioner on the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic. On 5 January 2016,she was appointed United Nations Special Adviser on the Summit on Addressing Large Movements of Refugees and Migrants held on September 19,2016. The Summit resulted in the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants.

Iain John Hook was a British aid worker and military officer who worked for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) as project manager in the rebuilding of Jenin Refugee Camp in West Bank,which was home to 13,000 Palestinian refugees. After Hook left a voice message with Israeli authorities that Palestinian militants ("shabab"-youth) had "knocked a hole in the wall" and "pinned down" his men,during an engagement in Jenin,he was shot and killed by an Israel Defense Forces sniper. Israeli Army radio said that the sniper who killed him mistook his cell phone for a handgun or grenade. A United Nations Security Council resolution condemning Israel was vetoed by the United States. In 2005,a British inquest jury returned a verdict of unlawful killing.

John Bennett Blandford Jr. (1897-1972) was the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East's second Director from 1951 to 1953. Blandford served as chairman of the UNRWA Advisory Commission before becoming director of UNRWA. He had been deputy chief of U.S. Economic Cooperation Administration in Greece and a consultant to president Harry Truman on the Marshall Plan.
