A regional school unit is a type of school district in Maine.

They were created starting in 2008 pursuant to a change in Maine Law that attempted to save on administrative costs by consolidating Maine's many school districts into larger districts. This change was championed by Governor John Baldacci. [1] [2]

Despite a deadline of January 30, 2009, many voters rejected their local school consolidation plans, citing issues such as loss of local control and higher costs due to bringing lower-paid teachers up to parity. [3] For example, Brewer faced an annual loss of $244,000 in state subsidies for rejecting the consolidation plan, but potentially a loss of $2.74 million in increased salaries over the first 3 years if it had been approved. [4]

As of 2021, 77 RSUs had been formed. [5]

Regional School Unit 68, formerly known as Maine School Administrative District 68 or MSAD 68, consists of two public schools in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine. The district serves the towns of Dover-Foxcroft, Monson, Sebec, Charleston, and smaller communities. Students are often bussed in from these outlying towns. It is the largest of four school districts in Piscataquis County. Dover-Foxcroft has since become a hub for MSAD 68, as Monson was the final town outside Dover-Foxcroft to have a school in the district until the end of the 2008–2009 school year, when Monson Elementary was closed due to declining enrollment. The building that once housed Monson Elementary has now become the Monson Center.

Regional School Unit 40 (RSU#40), formerly known as Maine School Administrative District #40, is a school district headquartered on the second floor of Union Elementary School in Union, Maine. MSAD 40 comprises the public education services for students in Union, Friendship, Waldoboro, Warren, and Washington.

Henry L. Joy was an American politician and teacher from Maine. Joy was a Republican from Crystal, Maine. He was first elected to the Maine House of Representatives in 1992, which was the 116th Legislature, and served in every consecutive legislature except for the 120th Legislature, when he made an unsuccessful bid for governor of Maine, after which he served as a Selectman for the town of Crystal, and was returned to the 121st Legislature in 2002, re-elected in 2004 and 2006.

Skowhegan Area High School is a public high school in Skowhegan, Maine, United States. It is part of Maine School Administrative District 54 which includes the towns of Skowhegan, Canaan, Mercer, Smithfield, Cornville, and Norridgewock.
